14 | HIGHER EDUCATION
Higher Education at South Birmingham College Are you thinking about going to university, but are concerned about the cost, having to move away or don’t quite have the right qualifications?
Higher Education courses don’t have to be studied at a university, at South Birmingham College we have a range of courses that can lead to a higher education qualification that will suit your learning needs and can help you progress into employment or university.
Foundation DegreesFoundation Degree courses are designed and delivered in partnership with employers that provide the knowledge and skills required for the workplace and combine a mixture of academic study and workplace learning.
Higher National Diploma
The Higher National Diploma also known as HND is a level 5 vocational qualification which provides both theoretical and practical knowledge in a particular sector. Completion of the HND can lead direct to employment or help you progress onto the final year of a full degree.
Higher National Certificate
The Higher National Certificate also known as a HNC is similar to the HND in that it provides both theoretical and practical knowledge in a certain subject, but it may be a better option for part time study. Once completed you could even complete another year to top up to a full Higher National Diploma.
Higher Education courses are run in partnership with Birmingham City University. You will complete your studies at the college but you will be enrolled with the university and have access to all the facilities and services of both the college and the university.
By choosing to study a higher education qualification you will benefit from being able to study locally in smaller class sizes than a university possibility at a lower cost. The good news is that you will still be able to progress through onto full degree programme onto the second or final year.

South Birmingham College Making the News
Actors from South Birmingham College (SBC)
staged an amazing play about the heyday of
Birmingham’s club culture.
Something Wicked took a light-hearted look at
the burgeoning rave scene of the the late 80s and
early 90s and was developed by BTEC National
Diploma: Performing Arts students and staff.
The play follows a group of people from wildly
varying backgrounds gathering for an outdoor rave
and was told through drama, dance and music.
Performer Bethany Brown, aged 17, said: “It was
nerve-wracking but it was great to learn how to be
confident when performing.
“We all got a bit nervous but it’s an incredible rush
when you’re on stage in front of all those people.”
Fellow actor Nathan Lafayette, aged 18, felt
staging such an elaborate show was a valuable
educational experience.
He said: “The technical side was really good as
well. We did stage direction and vocal exercises to prepare our voices. It was good to learn the nitty gritty as well as the performance craft.”
Tutor Henry Nolan said: “The performances were fantastic and the audience really enjoyed it. It touched on some adult themes but it didn’t hit you over the head with them.
“The students have really impressed me with their enthusiasm and ability.”

SOUTH BIRMINGHAM COLLEGE MAKING THE NEWS | 17
South Birmingham College students wowed fashion fanatics with flamboyant red outfits boasting birds, cages, and masks at a top fashion show.
The clothes, based on an AIDS awareness theme, were modelled by fellow students at the much-anticipated fashion week at Solihull’s Touchwood Shopping Centre.
Eileen Simons, Assistant Director of Creative Studies at South Birmingham College, said the event was a fantastic experience.
“Scores of fashion lovers turned out for our show and it was a real boost for the students,” she said.
“The designs we displayed were originally made for the Positively Red fashion show held during Birmingham’s AIDS awareness week. The students put a lot of effort into the garments and it has been great to show them off again.
“Taking part in the fashion week has also given them first-hand experience of preparing for and working at professional fashion shows. It will look great on their CVs.”
Nick Clegg meets City studentsDeputy PM Nick Clegg visited South Birmingham College to answer students’ questions about his plans for the future of Britain.
The Liberal Democrat leader was quizzed about his party’s policies in a Q&A session at the College’s Hall Green Campus in Cole Bank Road in the run up to the election.
Some of the areas that came up were jobs for young people, childcare for working parents, opportunities for those with disabilities and the economy.
He said: “It was clear that the students were all very informed and were a credit to the College. I hope they enjoyed and got out of the experience as much as I did.”
Maya Black, age 26, is doing an Access to Social Care & Health Professionals course and asked Mr Clegg about his plans to increase the number of jobs for young people.
She said: “It’s important for young people to know about what is going on in the world and I think the students here found the event incredibly valuable.”

This new flexible route is ideal if you are unemployed or do not have the time to undertake a full qualification but are looking to gain new skills. Each unit varies in length, but typically you will only need to attend college for a couple of hours for a few weeks to complete a unit.
