ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Martin McDonagh

Martin McDonagh has been called "one o f the half-dozen finest playwrights inthe English-speaking world" (Wall Street Journal). Yet his plays and films havealso been branded as inflammatory, sadistic and dangerous. His works sparkequal measures o f laughter and revulsion. In his own words, "I suppose I walkthat line between comedy and cruelty, because I think one illuminates the o ther.I tend to push things as far as I can because I think you can see things moreclearly through exaggeration than reality" (The Guardian). Born in London to Irish parents in 1970, his early plays set in Ireland show anasty underside to the traditional romantic and mythic view commonlyportrayed. In plays such as "The Beauty Queen o f Leenane," "A Skull inConnemara," "The Lonesome West," and "The Lieutenant o f Inishmore,"McDonagh explores gro tesque characters and their vio lent reactions to theirworld through an explosive satire that has earned them admirers anddetractors. His first work set outside Ireland, "The Pillowman," also courtedcontroversy in an uneasy mix o f absurdist humor and sadistic terror in thestory o f an author o f Bro thers Grimm style stories questioned by theauthorities after killings mirroring his stories occur. His plays have earned twoOlivier Awards and four Tony Award nominations for Best Play. "A Behanding in Spokane" is McDonagh's first play set in America and againcarries a style American audiences would find familiar in the works o f QuentinTarantino in the mix o f humor and horror. Indeed, McDonagh has moved intothe world o f film, winning an Academy Award for writing and directing the shortfilm "Six Shooter" and a screenwriting nomination for "In Bruges." McDonagh responds to his vo latile stories saying, "Well, we're all cruel aren'twe? We're all extreme in one way or another at times, and that's what drama,since the Greeks, has dealt with. I hope the overall view isn't just that, though,or I've failed in my writing. There have to be moments when you glimpsesomething decent, something life-affirming even in the most twisted character.That's where real art lies. See, I would always suspect characters who arepainted as lovely, decent human beings. I would always question where thedarkness lies" (The Guardian).
