A dear riend was visiting us rom Toronto recently and he was seeking advice while contemplating the purchase o a particular property
he was very interested in. He kept reerring to valuations and how there seemed to be an inconsistency within the marketplace even

Then I asked him about their decision making process... was the decision to buy the home fnancially or emotionally driven? The National
Association o Realtors conducts routine studies and in July reported 31% o Buyers in the marketplace are age 33 to 47 (the largestgroup by age category) and the median age was 39 - ironically the exact age o my riend. It was a very long conversation but a Buyer
simply cannot deny that there is someone else in the marketplace looking or the exact same eatures in a home. Thereore, the largest
contributing actor to valuation in todays real estate market is very simply appeal (or what the theory calls Demand). It was a healthy
debate or hours and he summarized quite eloquently - So what youre saying is I have to bid just above what the next emotional Buyer
is willing to pay or it. Exactly.

Shortly ater Frank Vanderlip acquired the 16,000 acre Palos Verdes Peninsula with a
group o investors in 1913 he developed plans or a gol course on his property. Original plans
included the construction o a magnifcent gol club on the blus overlooking Portuguese
Bend, to be known as Los Palos Verdes Country Club. The gol links was to include a
clubhouse with 150 guest rooms, locker rooms, and numerous dining and community rooms.
Other amenities were to include a large swimming pool, tennis courts, polo grounds, and a
yacht club with concrete pier. World War I however curtailed these plans or the country club.
In the early 1920s, developers o the Palos Verdes Project built a number o amenities to promote
lot sales in the new community o Palos Verdes Estates. The gol club was constructed at the same
time as other amenities o the new city, such as the La Venta Inn and the Palos Verdes Swim Club.
Palos Verdes Gol Club opened on November 15, 1924. The gol course was designed and built by the
team o William P. Billy Bell and George C. Thomas. It is a classic example o courses built during the
era that has become known as the Golden Age o Gol Course Architecture. Other examples o their
work in Southern Cali. include, the North Course at Los Angeles CC, Riviera CC, Bel Air CC, as well as
the Ojai Valley Inn Gol Course. The course was designed with ocean views rom 14 o its 18 holes. The
club was very popular in the 1920s with celebrities such as Douglas Fairbanks.
The land on which the course is situated is owned by the City o Palos Verdes Estates,
and the club is operated under a concession agreement with the City. The club is semi-
private, with private memberships sold giving club members priority tee times, and only club
members and residents o the City (in the aternoon) may play on the weekends. The public
does have access at certain times and days mid-week.
The clubhouse was designed by Clarence E. Howard, with landscaping design by the
Olmsted Brothers. The landscaping included hundreds o Eucalyptus Trees, which line the
airways o several holes, most o which had been planted years beore by early ranchers. The
clubhouse cost $60,000 to build, and it was determined almost immediately that it needed to be
expanded. Both the course itsel and its restaurant quickly became overcrowded. The building
was extended 60 t to the east to make room or a new gol shop and caddy house. The clubhouse
was completely remodeled in 2007.

Home prices in the U.S. have historically risen at an average of
about 3.6% a year. Interestingly, if the housing market had not
gone through the recent boom and bust cycle, and prices simply
had risen at the historic average of 3.6% during the cycle, home

While many o our South Bay cities have recently enjoyed milestone birthdays
and celebrations, one town in particular stands out due to its unique location and
colorful history.
Catalina Island is located just twenty-two miles across the bay rom the Los
Angeles Harbor, and Avalon is the only incorporated city on the island, as well
as the southernmost city in Los Angeles County. While Avalon has a population
of approximately 3,800 year-round residents, that number swells to an annual
count of one million due to visitors and tourists making the exciting trip across
the bay.
As the ship slowly approaches Catalina Island and Avalon Harbor comes into
view, visitors feel as though they are arriving at a beautiful Mediterranean port.
Avalon is so picturesque and quaint, and at just over 2-2/3 square miles in size,
its easy to stroll around the town.
Small, cottage-type homes make up the downtown area, and typically youll
see a gol car parked nearby every home -- the main mode o transportation on
Avalon. There are very few cars on the island and not a single trafc light. You
truly feel a world away from the crowds and stress of the mainland.
Many on the mainland have been visiting Catalina Island for years.
We started going in the 50s with our parents, says Kenneth DiNoto, a
longtime Palos Verdes resident. It was our favorite vacation spot with our
family. Wed go on the big white steamship. DiNoto recalls the steamship being
surrounded by speedboats upon arriving at Avalon, and as the steamship was
tying up to the dock, local kids would dive for coins.
Although Avalon has changed a little bit over these one hundred years, the
town has maintained a small, beach town vibe that is getting harder to nd along
our populated coast.
A conscientious effort has been made to provide that same friendly
atmosphere, says DiNoto, who recalls dropping shing lines off the end of the
pier as a kid. Eventually, he took his own children to Catalina every year, and now
there is an annual family trip that includes his grandchildren.
Todays Avalon obviously owes much to William Wrigley, Jr., who oversaw
much o the development o this resort town, including the construction o the
nearly twelve-story high Catalina Casino. More history on the popular Casino
as well as Catalina history can be ound at the Catalina Museum, located in the
Casino building. In honor of Avalons 100th birthday, the Museum is hosting a
special retrospective, Avalon: 100 Years of Bizarre, Fascinating, and Colorful
History. The exhibit opens on October 11, 2013. For more information, go to

As a landscape architect in the Pacic Northwest, Shannon Lester continually
came across the same problem. Many of her clients could never nd the modern
planters they so desperately wanted for their outdoor spaces.
Thats when Lester had an idea. What if she created them? With over 15 years of
experience designing public spaces and private landscapes, Lester decided to form
her own company called Steel Life in early 2012.
I wanted to create architecturally interesting planters that were made in the
United States, Lester said. I also thought a lot about sustainability.
Hoping to make the perect planters or cacti, succulents and other drought-
tolerant plants, Lester designed The Desert Collection. The shape of the bowls
eliminate the need for excessive soil and unnecessary water usage that is typicallyused in deeper containers. The designs also reduce the chance of plants being
overwatered and having their roots rot in the process.
Steel Lie oers ve dierent design options within the collection, ranging in
price from $98-$296. Short and tall, narrow and wide, the collections planters can
t almost anywhere. The mod dish offers three different height options, while the
matchstick planter comes in two different sizes. The three other options in the
collection include the jack planter, the shallow root vessel and the living wall.
While color options vary depending on the planter, Steel Lie planters come
in citrus (orange), sky (blue), verdant (lime green), frost (white) and citrine (red).
I really wanted to bring color into the garden, Lester said. These pops of
color are really bold and bright. It really is a conversation piece
Assembling the planters in Bend, Oregon, which is a ew hours south o Portland,
Steel Lie works with local artisans, cratsmen and small businesses in the Pacic
Northwest. Each bowl is individually spun, with Steel Life using machinery that
dates back to the 1900s. A few of the planters are even made from locally salvaged
and up cycled steel, while the walnut and American white oak used in the other
planters is nished with UV-resistant renewable oils and waxes.
And while Lesters designs were specically or planters, plenty o customers
have found other unique ways to use them. Lester said that shes seen customers
use the planters as fruit bowls, coolers and even letter holders.Receiving interest in Steel Lie rom all over the country and even into
Australia, Lester said shes sold planters from California to New York. Specically
in Southern Caliornia, the planters can be purchased at stores in Palm Springs,
Costa Mesa and Irvine.
I really thought about the design, Lester said. Unlike a lot of designs out
there, the ones I created are for specic types of plants. I want the plant to live a
long time.
