Retention Strategy • Making sure that the students attend local and international conferences for their exposure

to other peers and established scientists for them to establish future collaboration.

• Making sure that students graduate on time since this will attract more graduate students to be part of the Chair

• Hiring more Postdocs from other funding which helps students to progress easily and this enables them to complete their degree on record time.

• Hiring students for teaching assistantship from other funding sources which gives the student an experience to be academics

5.4. Institutional Benefits of Hosting the Chair

Provide evidence in the form of reports (using provided guidelines) on the effect of the Chair on the following: A. Discipline Attach a report from two or more researchers commenting on the effect of the Chair in the discipline and one from the Head of Department in which the Chair resides B. Host University Attach a report from the university DVC responsible for management of the Research Chair to account on the benefit to the university of hosting this Research Chair. 6. Institutional Support for the Chair

Report on the support provided by the host institutional in ensuring success of the Chair The University of Pretoria has given enthusiastic support to the Chair from its inception. It has provided funds for laboratory refurbishment, student bursaries and financial support towards the acquisition of key items of equipment. A forum of SARChI Chair holders chaired by University officials ensured exchange of views and information between the chair holders themselves and the University authorities. The University makes available access to support through all of its internal research support programs and prioritizes requests for leading researchers including SARChi chairs 7. Research Vignette

Please provide highlights of any noteworthy research findings or impact of the work of the Chair. To date, more than 10 PhD and 5 MSc students have graduated from the chair. Publications in quality journals International profile of the Group developed.
