National Communication• 1931-2015: South Africa has warmed by 2°C/

century or even higher for some parts of the

country since 1931

• 2016-2035: Warming is projected to range

between 0.5 to 1°C at most locations

• 2040-2060: The western to central interior

regions are projected to warm by 2 - 3 °C

• 2080-2099: Temperature increases of more

than 4°C are likely over the entire interior

• The Climate Change Flagship Programmes of the National Climate Change Response Policy are South Africa’s response to implementing climate action at a national scale

• The Climate Change Flagship programmes are implementation programmes, and represent the leading climate action committed to or already underway

• The programmes provide a coordination and consolidating mechanism the implementation of projects or groups of projects to national-scale implementation

Transitioning to a Low carbon and

Climate Resilient Economy and Society

To champion implementation of climate action beyond pilot initiatives

Accelerated implementation of high impact, large-scale catalytic climate action

Climate Change Flagship Programmes Goals

• South Africa has a well-developed base to effect climate change mitigation and adaptation

• The Climate Change Flagship Programmes respond to the three key challenges facing

South Africa and other countries as global efforts to address climate change intensify:

Demonstrating the course of actions needed to respond to climate change

Attracting resources at the scale required to enable meaningful transformation

Igniting national-scale action at the speed required to respond to climate change

• Market factors, competitive landscape, regulations and best practice were explored.

• Identified the perceived barriers and drivers of a rating tool in the South African

market and how the former can be mitigated and the latter developed.

• 4 target audiences identified and the communication is structured to foreground the

unique benefit in terms of living in the certified SMARTHOME for each.

Emerging Urban Renter (22-34)

Emerging Aspirant Home Buyers (29-40 Years)

Existing Home Owner (34+)

Pioneering Estate Agent & Principals (24 - 34)

The SMARTHOME Campaign Positioning

1 Do not talk or focus on “green” conscience.

2 Make benefits tangible & functional.[‘Save your pocket &

save the planet.’]

3 Simplify edge understanding focusing on water & energy

consumption & measurability

4 Emphasise relationship between individual behaviour

change + technology

5 Focus communication in digital & social media realms,

and enable 3rd party advocacy through experiences.

6 Concept of ‘smart’ - resonates with target group as a

technology that has function and emotional benefits.
