SPORT HAS THEPOWER TO CHANGE
THE WORLD, THE
POWER TO INSPIRE,THE POWER TO UNITEPEOPLE LIKE LITTLE
ELSE CAN. SPORT CANCREATE HOPE.
- NELSON MANDELA
As a new democracy many of South Africas
institutions, such as schools, still need help
in their development. The children of South
Africas Townships do not get the privilege
of sport that those in the higher classes do,
as sport is not yet in the national curriculum.
Nelson Mandela once said that sport can
create hope, thus volunteering in South
Africa, will give you the opportunity to make
a real difference in a childs life whilst having
Safaris, Sky Dives and famous locations like
Jeffreys Bay on your doorstep.

WHY SOUTH AFRICA VOLUNTEERS?
Created by the award winning AmeriCamp team, here at South Africa
Volunteers, we like to think we are a little different. To us, you arent
just a number, you are a name and our personal service throughout
your application will ensure you feel supported and prepared for
your adventure. Our team are extremely experienced in this industry and
as travellers, and having been out to South Africa ourselves, we like to
think there is nothing we cant answer about our projects. You can call us,
email us, tweet us or come in and see us, our offices have a Ping Pong and
Foozeball table!
South Africa Volunteers holds the same values as AmeriCamp in that we
are determined to give every volunteer the best overall experience, for the
lowest price possible. As travellers ourselves we know how much every
penny can count, and so we have ensured our prices are competitive, and
we like to think we are one of the cheapest out there. We have also teamed
up with our amazing flight partners to help all our volunteers get great
flight deals they know they can trust.
FLEXIBLE PROJECTS FOCUS ON THE VOLUNTEERS NEEDS AND WISHES
On landing in South Africa and arriving at our volunteer accommodation,
the country and this amazing project will speak for themselves. South Africa
is one of the most beautiful and diverse countries in the world, trust us, you
will count yourself lucky to wake up there every morning. With our projects
you will be able to spend your weekends travelling the Garden Route and
local area, and we can guarantee you will never run out of things to do or
see. Plus we throw in at least two free trips for each volunteer which could
include a Township Braai (BBQ), a trip to a lion park or many others. Our
set intakes mean our projects are extremely social, and within minutes of
arriving at our amazing accommodation (complete with pool and wifi), we
know you will have made friends for life.

INASSOCIATIONWITH
TEACHINGAlthough it is the smaller of our two projects,
teaching is very popular amongst our volunteers.
Volunteers can focus solely on the teaching
project, or can choose to do a combination of
the two e.g. two days teaching and three days
coaching. Teachers do not need any previous
experience or qualifications, but like our Volunteer
Sports Coaches, we look for enthusiastic volunteers
who are passionate about making a change to this
community. The main role of a teacher will be as
an individual tutor to both fast and slow learners,
mainly tutoring Maths and English, as well as
assisting with homework in other subjects. Somevolunteers may get opportunities to teach their
own classes, but volunteers will only be asked if
comfortable to do so.
Teachers will have the choice to teach in two
schools, one of which includes Special Needs
education. Teachers will usually work from 9:00am
- 1:30/2:00pm, and will most commonly teach in
one school each day (which they can choose).
GENERAL PROJECT DETAILSAll our volunteers, regardless of which project they
are on, stay in the same volunteer accommodation.
This accommodation is extremely social, very safeand is based in a great area with loads of local
attractions. The accommodation has plenty of
facilities both practical and fun, inclusding WiFi,
TV, games room, swimming pool, lounge room,
washing machines and more. All volunteers are
transported to and from the projects by the
team in South Africa. The project mini vans are
also often used to help transport volunteers on
weekends to places such as Sky Diving and the
beach (but this does depend on their availability
and is not guaranteed).
SPORTS COACHINGThis is our most popular project! Whats better
han making a real difference in childrens lives
han games and sports whilst being in the
African sun all day?
Volunteers can coach a variation of sports
ncluding Rugby, Football, Swimming, Tennis,
Hockey, Netball, Cricket and more and no
previous experience or qualifications are
needed. We look for enthusiastic volunteers
with a passion for working with children and
basic knowledge of the sport they wish to
oach. If you are not experienced in any of the
ports mentioned, dont worry, we are always
welcome to new ideas from volunteers.
Sports coaches will leave their accommodation
t around 9:00am & return at 4:30pm, having
oached for about 90 minutes at three
different schools. Your evenings and weekends
re free for you to do what you like, and we
encourage all volunteers to travel the local and
urrounding areas.
PROJECTS
OUR VOLUNTEERS CAN GET INVOLVED IN
EITHER OF OUR PROJECTS SEPARATELY
OR DO A MIXTURE OF THE TWO, SPORTS
COACHING AND TEACHING.

PROCESS
APPLICATIONThe application form is very short and we only require
basic details from you. Once this has been received, the
team will be in touch with you to chat everything through.
If your application is successful, which if you are passionate
about working with children it probably will be, then you
will move on to the next stage.
PAYMENTWe have broken our payments down into stages to make
it easier for all of our volunteers. We require the 200
deposit payment as soon as possible from all volunteers, as
this secures your place in South Africa. Once this has been
paid, we will put you in touch with our flight partners and
organise your CRB check. Your remaining balance payment
(which depends on the project length selected) is then due
no later than two months before your departure.
PRE-DEPARTURERight up until departure, the team will be there to answer
any questions you may have. All volunteers are s ent an
information pack with helpful tips about preparation such as
vaccinations and what to pack. If you are happy for us to do
so, we also put all our volunteers in touch so they can discuss
the flights they are on and get chatting about the project.
ARRIVALOn arrival in South Africa, you will be met by the team with
a big sign! As we have set intake dates, it is very likely you
will be landing at the same/similar time as other volunteers
on the project, so there may be a group of you meeting at
the airport. From the airport you will be taken straight to
the volunteer accommodation where you will be able to
meet the other volunteers and get settled in. Your first few
days in South Africa will be very chilled with nothing big
planned, apart from some team bonding and orientation
excercises, which will prepare you for coaching/teaching.
After a weekend of relaxing, its time to head off to the
schools and start your adventure!
THE SOUTH AFRICA VOLUNTEERS PROCESS IS A QUICK AND EASY ONE, THE TEAM
WILL BE RIGHT WITH YOU FROM THE START OF YOUR APPLICATION TO ARRIVING
ON SOUTH AFRICAN SOIL AND BEYOND.
THE COSTS OF THE PROGRAMME DEPEND ON THE LENGTH OF STAY YOU SELECT.

TESTIMONIALS

Life in South Africa is full of culture, adventure and plenty of Braais (BBQs).
The South Africans are amazingly welcoming and laid back, and we are sure you
will feel right at home in no time. With eleven official languages, it may seem a
little daunting but with a mixture of some basic Xhosa, Afrikaans and of course
English phrases, you will be fine. Here are a few to get you started:
There is so much to do and see in South
Africa, especially around the local area of our
volunteer projects. Volunteers can spend their
weekends at the local beach watching wild
dolphins or go slightly further afield for an
adrenaline kick such as Sky Diving, Bungee
Jumping or Safaris (including night drives
watching Lions hunt).
Due to the set intake dates our projects have,
we always have a good number of volunteers in
South Africa at the same time. Our volunteers
all live together and we encourage them to
travel and explore together as well. Although
we cant guarantee it, we are very sure that after
experiencing this amazing country and creating
life changing memories together, you will have
made friends for life with your fellow volunteers.

JOHN WALTERS (12 Week Placement)
South Africa was the most incredible experience.
Working with the kids everyday and watching them
improve their skills whilst always smiling, will stay
with me forever. Freedom to explore the area with
some amazing, now friends for life, was really special
and I will never forget the memories that were made.
A real highlight was skydiving in Grahamstown as
well as being given a fright by rhinos whilst on safari.
I will never forget the good times I had and the
people I met.
DEAN HALLWORTH (5 Weeks Volunteering)
After 2 days in South Africa it immediately became my
favorite country. The activities along the Garden Route
are amazing. I went cage diving with great white
sharks, bungee jumping, sky diving, scuba diving.
I even rode an ostrich! The people are so friendly
and welcoming and I made so many friends. The
volunteering was so much fun, cant wait to go back!
LILY KARISON (8 Weeks Volunteering)
South Africa and the children in the Townships will
stay in my heart forever. It was the most amazing
trip of my life, and its safe to say I think of my
experience every day. I have made friends for life!
