OCTOBER 2019

PURPOSE of United Methodist Women

United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Greetings!

I found this quote about fall in Florida: “How do

you know when it’s Fall in Florida? When the li-

cense plates begin to change color.” While Florida

doesn’t get the change of colors as many states

north of us do, we do get a chance to see one of the

largest bird migrations and influx of birds each

fall. Depending on where you live in the state you

may see young raptors such as eagles, hawks, osprey, falcons from the

north coming along with the shorebirds such as different species of

sandpipers, warblers, etc. The best part really is the welcoming back of

our winter residents.

On September 21st we enjoyed a wonderful gathering in Port Charlotte

for our Mission Sampler. Thanks to the efforts of the Port Charlotte

United Methodist Women under the leadership of Laurie Leskanic we

were treated to a taste of Fall with their delicious snacks and lunch

and lovely Fall table decorations and bookmarks! Port Charlotte’s

praise band led by Dino, treated us to beautiful, awe inspiring music.

We heard from one of our youth who received a scholarship to Mission u

(we had three this year). Landon Davidson told us about his joy in go-

ing and learning about mission. Thanks go to Sandy Barton, Ruth

Hollandsworth and others who made the day special and informative

as we learned how to use the mission studies in our Units and Circles.

There are a few upcoming events that you are invited to attend and

celebrate all your hard work this past year. This has been a celebration

year as we wind down the 150 years of United Methodist Women, and

we will complete it in style both at our District Annual Meeting on Oc-

tober 19th in Englewood and at the Conference Annual Meeting on No-

vember 9th in Lakeland.

We will be voting on the new slate of officers and the 2020 budget at the District An-

nual Meeting. The Conference Officers and budget will be approved at the CAM. Reg-

istrations for both events are in this newsletter. There will be some mission study

books and prayer calendars available at our District meeting.

Finally, this is a reminder to send in your pledge for the third quarter in case you

haven’t done so already. Every year each Unit donates to a Love Offering at the CAM.

A form for this offering is enclosed in this newsletter for you to use and send to our

District Treasurer, Phyllis Jackman. .

Blessings,

Mary Van Tol,

President

Featured Book Selection

Fresh Expressions: A New Kind of Methodist Church For People Not In Church Paperback – May 1, 2017 by Kenneth Carter and Audrey Warren.

AMAZON: KINDLE $9.99 PAPERBACK $11.36

A wave of new Christian churches are emerging to reach unchurched and dechurched people who live in a culture that is increasingly non-religious and multi-religious. These new forms of church gather and network with people who typically have never been to church. The new faith communities listen to people and go where they are on the journey toward Jesus. They are deeply ecumenical but do not lose their distinctiveness because they learn fresh ways to communicate their identity through discipleship.

Fresh Expressions began in the United Kingdom where it ignited over 3000 new faith communities. In the United States the movement is putting down roots in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

Ken Carter and Audrey Warren offer this book as a group study for church leaders and congregations who are in the grip of Ho-ly Spirit motivation to renew their tradition by reaching people who are dechurched or not yet in a discipleship relationship with Jesus.

Each chapter includes two Bible study experiences for group conversation.

I am writing to you on behalf of my nine year old grandson Landon. Landon wishes to thank you, the South West District Leadership Team, for granting him a scholarship to attend his very first Mission u. To say he had a blast would be a drastic understatement. He made so many new friends, particulary Mary and Samu-el, that I know will last a lifetime. He especially enjoyed gathering the books for Cornerstone Family Minis-tries. In fact, Cathy Stone has invited him to visit her at Cornerstone and give him a personal tour of all their ministries on campus!

Thanks also to Lori Perkins and Jannett. You both took him under your wings and took care of him while I was working in the resource room.

So, from the bottom of our hearts, we both wish to say "thank you" and want to let you know that that one small scholarship you gave made a huge impact on a nine year old boy that I love with all my heart!

Thank you again, Shelley
