    Extractive industries

    Large mining and oil extraction activities generatesome of the biggest environmental problems in

    the world. For instance, US EPA recognizesmining wastes as the major environmentalconcern in the US. Remote areas are especiallyaffected by the lack of environmental control. Insome areas wastewater from extraction activitiescan present concentrations of polluting elementsup to a thousand times the maximum allowed

    limit.

    In some cases the median age at death ofaffected communities is less than half ofthe national one and some pollution-relatedillnesses (like skin problems or gastrointestinaldiseases) can have an incidence close to 90%(See www.source-international.org for variousstudies). Moreover, the social impacts as well as

    the impact on traditional ways of life ofindigenous populations are often not sufficientlytaken into account.

    Results

    In its first year Source International has: Contributed to the revision of the

    Honduran Mining Law into a new lawthat is more respectful of environmentand human rights

    Achieved a declaration ofenvironmental emergency and arestoration plan for the Pastaza riverbasin (in the Peruvian Amazon forest).

    Implemented a monitoring system foroil extraction in Basilicata, Italy,together with local secondary schools.

    Achieved the establishment of a round -table negotiation between thecommunity of Carrizalillo, (Guerrero,Mexico) and the mining company

    Goldcorp in order to obtain compensationfor environmental damages.

    Designed a national plan to controlmining pollution in Mexico.

    Who we are

    Source International is a non-profitorganization founded in 2012 and currently

    based in Italy. The organization operates withcommunities around the world that are dealingwith environmental pollution and health problemsprincipally caused by extractive industries. SourceInternational provides high-level technologicaland scientific support completely free ofcharge to communities with whom it works,

    helping them to assess the damage to thecommunitys resources and enabling them topromote restorative actions.In addition, Source International also trains localleaders, called promoters, so that these candevelop and promote their own environmentaland social monitoring systems.

    Our job

    Source International offers high qualityscientific environmental analysis to local

    communities. Together with the community,Source International takes care of the entireprocess: defining the location of samplingsites, sample collection and preservationaccording to the protocols established by law,as well as carrying out scientific analysis ininternationals certificate laboratories. Source

    International works with samples of water,soil, sediments and biological materials.

    Source International can carry out studiesrelated to the social impact and humanrights violation of extractive industries.

    Source International trains local leader toenable them to carry out a basic social and

    environmental monitoring system. Through some partner Source International

    can provide legal and strategicassistance.

    Source Internationals founder and president,Flaviano Bianchini, is currently the only Italian

    Ashoka Fellow and Source International hasbeen recognized as one of the 30 mostinnovative ideas of 2012 by the ABCContinuity Forum in Miami, USA.Furthermore, Source International was nominatedfor the Gifted Citizen Award at La Ciudad delas Ideas in Mexico, as well as for the 11 th

    Human Rights Award by Global Exchange.Lastly, Source International is nominated for theKaterva Award , which has been defined byReuters as the Nobel Prize of sustainability .
