Copyright 2020 Investor's Business Daily Inc. BY PAUL KATZEFF INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY The $1.2 billion Alger Focus Equity Fund ALGRX is one of the best mutual funds. The portfolio is, as its name indi- cates, focused, with only 48 stocks as of Sept. 29. Its top 10 holdings ac- count for 53% of shareholders’ money. And fund managers Patrick Kelly and Ankur Crawford hold all five of the super-popular megacap FAANG technology stocks: Face- book FB , Apple AAPL , Amazon AMZN , Netflix NFLX and Google-parent Al- phabet GOOG . All but Netflix are in their top 10. “The concept of innovation and change is at the core of our invest- ment philosophy,” Crawford said. “Twenty years ago, innovation was coming from a lot of small- and mid- cap companies. In the world today, a lot of innovation is coming from the large-cap platforms. Those are the businesses that have the capital and scale to really afford to do this.” Amazon is the fund’s largest posi- tion. “Amazon is by far the leader in two massive secular trends: e-commerce and cloud comput- ing,” Kelly said. “We believe Ama- zon will replace Walmart WMT as the largest retailer in the U.S. by 2023. It’s also developing a massive, high- margin digital advertising busi- ness, which can grow to almost $40 billion in 2022 from $5 billion in 2017. And in Amazon Web Ser- vices (AWS), they invented the cloud computing business.” Kelly added, “AWS has a $46 bil- lion run rate, growing about 30% an- nually, with EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) margins over 30%.” Run rate is annualization of September quarterly revenue. Kelly said, “Amazon also contin- ues to invest in new business areas like groceries, one-day shipping, business-to-business commerce and geographic expansion in India and South America. And they are in- vesting heavily in logistics.” The fund managers see chipmak- er Qualcomm QCOM as a pure play on the transition to 5G mobile commu- nications. Qualcomm is a linchpin to a world in which most everything is connected — the Internet of every- thing, an extension of the Internet of Things (IoT), Crawford says. “Over time, everything will be con- nected,” she said. “And the catalyst for that is 5G.” 5G is shorthand for the latest, fast- est wireless communications net- works. Regulatory Cloud Lifted Crawford and Kelly are relieved that a long-standing regulatory cloud shadowing Qualcomm has lifted. In August a federal appeals court reversed a federal antitrust ruling against the company. In the earlier case, a judge said the compa- ny had overcharged mobile phone makers for its wireless chip patents. Qualcomm’s near exclusive sta- tus as a maker of two kinds of chips lets it levy high royalty rates. PayPal PYPL is a driver of and bene- ficiary of the shift to digital pay- ments. That shift gets a tailwind from the growth of e-commerce, Crawford says. It also gets a boost from the coronavirus pandemic. PayPal also should benefit from Venmo, its peer-to-peer payments platform. And PayPal is partnering with other growing businesses, in- cluding Mercado Libre MELI and Facebook. Argentina-based Mercado Libre is an online retailer, auction site and payments facilitator. In addi- tion, PayPal has become a lead gen- eration service for financial servic- es such as loans and insurance, Crawford says. And PayPal has launched a cryp- tocurrencies trading service. In turn, each new service pro- vides PayPal with information about customers, which it can then seek to monetize, Crawford says. In what way is Focus Equity one of the best mutual funds? The fund is a 2020 IBD Best Mutual Funds Award winner, having topped the S&P 500 in calendar 2019 as well as over the three, five and 10 years ended Dec. 31 on an average-annu- al-return basis. Netflix, Google Focus On Top Portfolio Ideas Fund loves FAANG stocks because it aims for firms that grow by innovating BY PAUL KATZEFF INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY Americans are looking for tips about how to save money and how to cut spending. Despite prospects for Covid-19 vaccines, governors and mayors are talking about lockdowns in the interim. Prognosticators like the Conference Board foresee slowing economic growth in the fourth quarter. As a result, many people want to make themselves less vulnerable fi- nancially. And you can do that without dev- astating your lifestyle. Here are tips from leading financial advisors for cutting $1,000 or more in spend- ing in the next 12 months, without making yourself wince. “Even affluent clients are con- cerned,” said Melody Juge, founder of Life Income Manage- ment. They too wonder what would happen if they lost their jobs. Lost their jobs is exactly what happened to one pair of husband- wife clients of Scott Jarred, CEO of the registered investment advisor firm JarredBunch Consulting. The man, 44 years old, is a staging and lighting technician for rock bands in the San Francisco area. His wife, 43, is a yoga instructor. The man earned about $150,000 a year before the coronavirus pan- demic. His wife earned $50,000. But since early spring their in- comes have fallen to zero. No live concerts have been held. And cli- ents can’t visit the yoga studio. So the couple went to Jarred for tips about how to save money and cut their spending. “By acting quickly, we were able to save them $2,912 a month, or $34,944 a year,” Jarred said. Here’s how: Home mortgage. Refinancing their mortgage, they reduced their interest rate to 2.6% from 4%. That lowered their monthly payment to $1,401 from $2,387. Consolidating loans. They cashed out enough from their home loan to pay off two car loans totaling about $25,000 and a $6,000 credit card balance, which had a 23% inter- est rate. Monthly savings: Home loan: $986. Car loan: $1,200. Credit card: $376. To refinance, Jarred had to satis- fy the bank’s requirement that bor- rowers must be employed. Jarred’s solution was to help each client set up an online busi- ness. Working with a popular Bay Area musician, the technician is re- cording studio sessions, which the musician’s fans will be able to ac- cess online for a subscription fee. Similarly, the yoga instructor will soon be offering subscriptions to online workout sessions. Student loan. Separately, the technician arranged for his stu- dent loan to be placed in forbear- ance. That allows the client to stop repaying the loan temporarily without the loan being placed in default. Monthly savings: Student loan: $350. Juge engaged in similar financial jujitsu to cut other clients’ costs. In one couple, the husband is a physician. His wife is a part-time special education teacher. The spouses are both 60 years old. The doctor earns $300,000 a year. His wife earns $18,000. Still, the couple was living beyond their means by indulging spending whims, Juge says. Time share properties. The couple sold time share interests in two properties — vacation homes in Hawaii and the Caribbean — for $1,200 and $2,300 respectively. Proceeds went into their emergen- cy savings. And the sale ended on- going upkeep costs and mortgage payments. Monthly savings: Time shares combined: $250. The couple’s annual savings from those steps totaled $6,300. Juge helped another husband- wife client tandem in the San Diego area. The man is a 62-year- old retired aerospace security spe- cialist. His wife, 58, does not work. Now retired, the security special- ist’s annual income is $108,000. Health club. The couple stopped using an exercise club near their home. They began to use the health club in their residen- tial subdivision. They already had access through their homeowners’ association fees. Monthly savings: Exercise facility: $200. This couple’s annual savings from that step: $2,400. Qualcomm is a linchpin to aworld in which most everything isconnected — the Internet of every-thing, an extension of the Internetof Things (IoT), Crawford says.“Over time, everything will be con-nected,” she said. “And the catalystfor that is 5G.”

5G is shorthand for thelatest, fast-est wireless communications net-works.

Regulatory Cloud LiftedCrawford and Kelly are relieved

that a long-standing regulatorycloud shadowing Qualcomm haslifted. In August a federal appealscourt reversed a federal antitrustruling against the company. In theearlier case,a judgesaid the compa-ny had overcharged mobile phonemakersfor its wireless chip patents.

Qualcomm’s near exclusive sta-tus as a maker of two kinds of chipslets it levy high royalty rates.

PayPalPYPL is a driver of and bene-ficiary of the shift to digital pay-ments. That shift gets a tailwindfrom the growth of e-commerce,Crawford says. It also gets a boostfrom the coronavirus pandemic.

PayPal also should benefit from

Venmo, its peer-to-peer paymentsplatform. And PayPal is partneringwith other growing businesses, in-cluding Mercado LibreMELI andFacebook.

Argentina-based Mercado Libreis an online retailer, auction siteand payments facilitator. In addi-tion, PayPal has become a lead gen-eration service for financial servic-es such as loans and insurance,Crawford says.

And PayPal has launched a cryp-tocurrencies trading service.

In turn, each new service pro-vides PayPal with informationabout customers, which it can thenseek to monetize, Crawford says.

INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY

Americans are looking for tipsabout how to save money and howto cut spending.

Despite prospects for Covid-19vaccines, governors and mayorsare talking about lockdowns in theinterim. Prognosticators like theConference Board foresee slowingeconomic growth in the fourthquarter.

As a result, many people want tomakethemselves less vulnerable fi-nancially.

And you can do that without dev-astating your lifestyle. Here aretips from leading financial advisorsforcutting $1,000or more in spend-ing in the next 12 months, withoutmaking yourself wince.

“Even affluent clients are con-cerned,” said Melody Juge, founder of Life Income Manage-ment. They too wonder whatwould happen if they lost their jobs.

Lost their jobs is exactly whathappened to one pair of husband-wife clients of Scott Jarred, CEO ofthe registered investment advisorfirm JarredBunch Consulting.

The man, 44 years old, is a stagingand lighting technician for rockbands in the San Francisco area. His wife, 43, is a yoga instructor. The man earned about $150,000 ayear before the coronavirus pan-demic. His wife earned $50,000.

But since early spring their in-comes have fallen to zero. No liveconcerts have been held. And cli-ents can’t visit the yoga studio. Sothe couple went to Jarred for tipsabout how to save money and cuttheir spending.

“By acting quickly, we were ableto save them $2,912 a month, or$34,944 a year,” Jarred said. Here’s how:

Home mortgage. Refinancingtheir mortgage, they reduced theirinterest rate to 2.6% from 4%. Thatlowered their monthly payment to$1,401 from $2,387.

Consolidating loans. Theycashed out enough from their homeloan to pay off two car loans totalingabout $25,000 and a $6,000 creditcardbalance,whichhada23%inter-

est rate.Monthly savings: Home loan: $986. Car loan: $1,200. Credit card: $376.To refinance, Jarred had to satis-

fy the bank’s requirement that bor-rowers must be employed.

Jarred’s solution was to helpeach client set up an online busi-ness.

Working with a popular BayArea musician, the technician is re-cording studio sessions, which themusician’s fans will be able to ac-cess online for a subscription fee.

Similarly, the yoga instructorwill soon be offering subscriptionsto online workout sessions.

Student loan. Separately, thetechnician arranged for his stu-dent loan to be placed in forbear-ance. That allows the client to stoprepaying the loan temporarilywithout the loan being placed indefault. Monthly savings:

Student loan: $350.Juge engaged in similar financial

jujitsu to cut other clients’ costs. In one couple, the husband is a

physician. His wife is a part-timespecial education teacher.

The spouses are both 60 yearsold. The doctor earns $300,000 ayear. His wife earns $18,000. Still, the couple was living beyond theirmeans by indulging spendingwhims, Juge says.

Time share properties. Thecouple sold time share interests intwo properties — vacation homesin Hawaii and the Caribbean — for$1,200 and $2,300 respectively.Proceeds went into their emergen-cy savings. And the sale ended on-going upkeep costs and mortgagepayments. Monthly savings:

Time shares combined: $250.The couple’s annual savings

from those steps totaled $6,300.Juge helped another husband-

wife client tandem in the SanDiego area. The man is a 62-year-old retired aerospace security spe-cialist. His wife, 58, does not work.

Now retired, the security special-ist’s annual income is $108,000.

Health club. The couplestopped using an exercise clubnear their home. They began touse the health club in their residen-tial subdivision. They already hadaccess through their homeowners’association fees.

Monthly savings: Exercise facility: $200.This couple’s annual savings

from that step: $2,400.
