The Sounds of the Old City Festival is being held for a fourth time in Jerusalem’s Old City. The Festival is an initiative of the Jerusalem Development Authority, the Ministry of Jerusalem and Diaspora Affairs and the Jerusalem Municipality; it is managed and produced by Ariel Municipal Company.

The Festival provides a glimpse of the Old City's diverse musical traditions and is another key element in Jerusalem's cultural and tourism nightlife. You will be able to sample an exceptionally diverse array of musical offerings: bands and ensembles that authentically convey the unique cultural character of each Old City quarter.

The Old City’s quaint alleyways will serve as performance venues, enhancing the audience experience with their magical atmosphere.

In Gan HaBonim you will be able to enjoy an impressive variety of musical performances under the stars, while Jaffa Gate Plaza will be the scene of a folk music extravaganza in a myriad of styles. The Armenian Quarter will hold an authentic Armenian gala. The Jewish Quarter will be host to the broad range of Israeli music; the Muslim Quarter will feature ethnic music; and an encounter with inspiring works awaits visitors to the Christian Quarter.

You are invited to stroll through the Old City and experience a delightful and varied festival of sound!

Did you know?The line of the (Armenian) wall bordering the garden has been maintained throughout the city’s history, since the construction of Hezekiah’s Wall during the late Temple period. Seven distinct eras can be clearly discerned in the walls’ various architectural styles: Hasmonean, Herodian, Byzantine, Fatimid, Crusader, Ayyubid and Ottoman. There are also tombs from the First Temple period, as well as a large industrial structure from that time.

Harel OrchestraOpening PerformanceHarel Orchestra – the graduate orchestra of Jerusalem’s Alpert Municipal Music Center. A wind ensemble comprising 50 volunteer musicians who appear in official and philanthropic frameworks and play Israeli and world music, song cycles, jazz, classical music and more.

Celebrated musician and composer Niko Levy hosts flautist Adi Silberberg in a special Sounds of the Old City Festival concert, at the foot of Jerusalem’s Old City walls.

Jaffa Gate (Arabic: ,Bab el-Khalil , باب اخلليل“Hebron Gate”) is one of eight gates in the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City.During the Crusader period it was also called “David’s Gate,” for the Tower of David citadel that is adjacent to it. The gate is embedded in the western Old City wall, and is named for the ancient road leading from it to the Port of Jaffa (and to Jerusalem’s present-day Jaffa Road), Eretz Israel’s main port until the British Mandate period.

Beit HaBubot “The Dollhouse”The band’s first album, Madafim, was released in 2005 and went on to become a great commercial success, winning for Beit HaBubot an impressive array of awards, including Ensemble of the Year, Discovery of the Year, and Band of the Year. Did you know?

In Latin, cardo means "main street." The Jerusalem Cardo served, in Roman times, as a main street that ran through the city from Damascus Gate to the Dung Gate. Beit HaBad Street (Khan a-Zayit or "Oil Press" Street) and its continuation at Shuk HaBesamim are the main lines of the Cardo that, since the Roman era – 135 CE – continue to cut across the Old City.

Did you know?

The synagogue was originally built in the early 18th century by a group of immigrants that included Rabbi Judah he-Hasid. The synagogue was destroyed during the Ottoman period. In the mid-19th century it was rebuilt by followers of the Vilna Gaon. The synagogue was again destroyed, by the Arab Legion, when the Old City was captured. In the early 2000s the Hurva synagogue was rebuilt and restored for the third time.

The Market Rooftops – better known as the Galicia Courtyard Rooftops – is the promenade that extends over the Old City market rooftops.

Old City Sounds and Shadows Beit Shmuel

On evenings during the Sounds of the Old City Festival, the Old City comes alive. During these enchanted hours we will stroll through alleyways echoing with sound and song; we will inhale the melodies along with Jerusalem’s bracing mountain air, hear explanations and ascend to a breathtaking rooftop overlook.
