WELCOME

Welcome to Sounds from the Deep.

This year marks 45 years since I joined Queensland Symphony Orchestra as Principal Harpist, a record for this position in professional Australian orchestras.

Things have changed a lot over the years. Our Sunday work in the 1970s required us to perform free outdoor evening concerts in the hot wet summer months in the old Sound Shell in the City Botanic Gardens. Intrepid and loyal Queenslanders flocked to hear us, decked out in all-weather attire and armed with mosquito repellent and waterproof ground cover. Additional gatecrashers of the non-human kind were dozens if not hundreds of cane toads loitering in the darker areas, attracted by the stage lighting. Things weren’t too comfortable on stage either, as musicians regularly dodged crawling and flying insects, some even landing on our fingers as we played, or using the occasional bald head of a comrade for a safer landing strip. I am very relieved that in more recent times we have relocated our Sunday concerts to the delightful QPAC Concert Hall – far more amenable to good listening.

Some of the music we present for you today we also played regularly back then – Handel’s Water Music, The Beautiful Blue Danube and The Moldau are particular favourites. I am especially fond of the ballet Swan Lake as there are many beautiful harp solos throughout. The heroes appropriately die in the lake and their souls rush up to heaven accompanied by the glorious sounds of repeated harp arpeggios in C flat major – what a beautiful harmonic place to rest for eternity!

Orchestras sit in sections based on types of instruments. There are four main sections in the symphony orchestra (strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion) and sometimes a keyboard section.

STRINGSThese instruments produce sound by bowing or plucking stretched strings.

WHO SITS WHERE

The following terms appear in bold the first time they appear in the listening guide.

Symphonic cycle separate movements of a symphony performed at the same time or a set of symphonies that are linked in some way (such as theme or composer).

Movement a self-contained section of a work.

Kapellmeister translates from German as chapel or choir master, the term is sometimes used today to refer to the director or conductor of an orchestra or choir.

Suite a set of instrumental or orchestral works.

Concerto an orchestral work which features a solo instrumentalist.

Cavatina a short, simple song.

Waltz an elegant dance which has groups of three beats, with the first beat receiving the most emphasis.

Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884)The Moldau from Má vlastA major exponent of musical nationalism in the 19th century, the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana wrote many pieces extolling the virtues of his homeland. His most famous work is probably the symphonic cycle Má vlast (My Country) which features the movement titled, ‘The Moldau’. The Moldau portrays the course of Bohemia’s mighty Moldau river from its source as two cold streams (flute and clarinet) unite in a single current flowing past various Czech sights (meadows, castles, etc…) before vanishing into the distance.

Water parties – trips on barges up the Thames – were employed by the British monarchy to keep themselves visible to their subjects. George I found water parties the least irksome part of royal pageantry. He was also an admirer of the music of Handel who had been his Kapellmeister while Elector of Hannover and so, when Baron Kielmansegge stage-managed a water party in 1717 for a journey from Whitehall to Chelsea, Handel wrote three suites of dances and other short pieces. The king liked them so much he asked for them to be played ‘three times in going and returning’. Today’s selection comes from Suite 1. A bourrée is a pert dance of French origin. A hornpipe is a lively dance associated with sailors.

Nigel Westlake (b. 1958)Antarctica: Suite for Orchestra and Guitar

1. The Last Place on Earth 3. Penguin Ballet

Nigel Westlake is one of Australia’s most prolific composers whose influence extends beyond the concert hall. He wrote the music for the popular Babe movies. His music for Antarctica began as a soundtrack to John Weiley’s IMAX documentary on the southern continent. Although converted into guitar concerto form in 1992, the concerto exhibits its filmic origins, inspired by Antarctica’s awe-inspiring landscapes and seas. In its original guise, ‘The Last Place on Earth’ accompanied an aerial view of the ice cap, shot in the full daylight of the midnight sun. ‘Penguin Ballet’ shows another, less comical, side of these birds – ‘so clumsy on land, so graceful in the water’. To evade leopard seals, emperor penguins must leave the water at fantastic speeds. Westlake’s music mirrors this mercurial action.

Stanley Myers (1930-1993) orch. Jessica Wells (b. 1974)Cavatina from The Deer HunterStanley Myers was a British musician who composed music for over 60 films and TV series. He was an early mentor of Hans Zimmer, famous for Pirates of the Caribbean. This cavatina was originally composed for piano but Australian guitarist John Williams suggested it be turned into a work for guitar, in which form it was used in a 1970 film, The Walking Stick, but became most famous as the signature theme of Michael Cimino’s 1978 film, The Deer Hunter.

Benjamin Britten (1913-1976)Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, Op.33a

III. Moonlight: Andante comodo e rubato

The young British composer Benjamin Britten might be said to have made his mark with the 1942 premiere at Sadler’s Wells, London, of his opera Peter Grimes. The poem on which the opera is based, The Borough by George Crabbe, with its seafaring village atmosphere, resonated deeply with Britten whose parents’ house in Lowestoft ‘directly faced the sea’, and where fierce storms ‘sometimes drove ships on our coast and ate away whole stretches of neighbouring cliffs’. The Four Sea Interludes that Britten extracted from the opera have been described as some of the most effective portrayals of the sea in the orchestral literature. In a theatrical performance, the repose of ‘Moonlight’ is ironic. Another of Grimes’ apprentices has died by misadventure, and already the audience senses that Grimes is steering unavoidably towards tragedy.

Johann Strauss Jr. (1825-1899)On the Beautiful Blue Danube, Op.314Stanley Kubrick used Johann Strauss II’s Blue Danube waltz to accompany a scene of docking spacecraft in his science fiction film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and in fact Strauss’s waltz may have had its origins in a piece for men’s chorus celebrating Vienna’s new street lighting, but the lilt and atmosphere of the work have come to be synonymous with the Danube river. The introduction might be fog lifting off the river in the early morning. And even if the Danube is only blue on certain days, Strauss’s waltz has, as Egon Gartenberg once said, made the Danube blue for all the world. Was it the almost-symphonic scale or the felicitous melody that made Johannes Brahms once wish he had written this piece?

No.28 Odette Offended No.29 Finale

Tchaikovsky said that he composed Swan Lake for the money (800 rubles) but in composing it the symphonist became one of the great ballet composers. The work was premiered at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1877. The plot concerns maidens who have been turned into swans by the evil sorcerer Rothbart. In Act III, Prince Siegfried’s mother demands that he choose a bride. In love with the swan-princess Odette, he mistakenly chooses Rothbart’s daughter Odile who appears similar to Odette except she wears black. In Act IV he rushes back to the swans’ lake to apologise to Odette and Rothbart arrives to force him to honour his pledge to Odile, but Siegfried and Odette plunge into the lake denying Rothbart his victory. The famous oboe melody transforms into the major as if confirming Rothbart’s defeat.

Guy NobleConductor & HostGuy Noble has had a long association with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, having first worked with the orchestra in 1994. He has been host of the Music on Sundays series since 2005 and conducted the Orchestra in many other concerts in QPAC, Cairns, Townsville and the Gold Coast. When he isn’t with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Guy also performs with the other major orchestras around the country. He also has worked with the Malaysian Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Philharmonic (in Music of John Williams) and the Auckland Philharmonic in their Unwrap the Classics series, and the Bergen Philharmonic as part of the Bergen Festival. He is also host and conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Classics Unwrapped series at the Adelaide Town Hall.

Guy is the host and accompanist each year for Great Opera Hits (Opera Australia) in the Joan Sutherland Theatre of the Sydney Opera House. His Opera! The Opera will be performed as part of the inaugural season of Coast Opera Australia in December.

Guy has worked with a wide variety of international performers with orchestras across Australia, including Harry Connick Jnr, Ben Folds, The Beach Boys, The Pointer Sisters, Dianne Reeves, Glenn Frey, Randy Newman, Clive James, Conchita, The Two Cellos, Alfie Boe, and Olivia Newton John. He is also the host of Concert Hall on Qantas Radio.

Karin SchauppGuitarKarin Schaupp is one of the most outstanding guitarists on the international scene, her playing hailed by the German press as ‘so perfect, so complete, that it seems like a miracle’. In her teens she won prestigious international prizes in Italy and Spain, and is today sought after internationally as a recitalist, soloist and festival guest, making countless television and radio appearances.

Karin has released six best-selling solo CDs for Warner Music and ABC Classics as well as various award-winning ensemble and orchestral albums. Recent releases include Wayfaring (2018) with cellist Umberto Clerici, the ARIA-award winning Songs of the Latin Skies (2017) with Australian songstress Katie Noonan; Mosaic (2015), the first ever CD dedicated to guitar concertos by Australian composers; the ARIA-nominated Fandango (2011) with

Flinders Quartet; and Cradle Songs (2010), a collection of lullabies from around the world, all arranged for solo guitar.

Performance highlights include performing as soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, some 150 performances of Lotte’s Gift, performances at a Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony, Goodwill Games Opening Ceremony, World Expo (Japan) and Hong Kong Arts Festival, and a Musica Viva International Concert Season tour with Pavel Steidl.

Karin is Head of Classical Guitar at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. She lives in Brisbane with her husband Giac and two young children.
