Welcome to mjf 2017Sounds fantastic!It’s our 22nd festival and fullest ever programme.

We’ve built on our reputation for adventurous programming, with international jazz stars, local gems, newly-commissioned music, European debuts, boundary-pushing ideas, ‘mjf introduces’ young talent and celebrated anniversaries – all making for some of the most enjoyable, surprising and memorable musical encounters.

We’re also celebrating the #jazz100 campaign, with over 100 bands in 100+ hours.

The jewel in our crown this year is our new main venue in Albert Square. Step into the magical 1920s Salon Perdu Spiegeltent, where half our events take place, and experience the luxurious surrounds of a cabaret club like no other. Art Nouveau ultra-chic, this intimately circular, oak-panelled structure, with an opulent mirrored bar, will whisk you into another world. With its limited capacity, we expect many events here to sell out in advance, so book early.

Irwin Mitchell originals 2017The Irwin Mitchell mjf originals series seeks out and pioneers new jazz. Every year, musician-composers from the North West are invited to propose ambitious ideas for a new work to be premièred at mjf. The only open jazz commissioning scheme of its kind in the UK, it has generated 19 major new works so far.

This year’s commission has been awarded to pianist/composer, Andy Stamatakis-Brown - a longstanding member of the Manchester jazz scene. His first band, 6pac, received the Peter Whittingham Award and his compositions have been performed across Europe, Australia and the USA. Currently, he performs with his own trio; in Gypsies of Bohemia; with Manchester Jazz Collective and Hacienda Classical. See P.21 to read about his new work for mjf 2017, ‘Cottonopolis’.

Jazz goes to the moviesFollowing last year’s successful collaboration, HOME is pleased to partner with once again on a short season of jazz-related movies. The focus this time around is on documentary and, having showcased Tubby Hayes, this year we turn the spotlight on unsung British legend Basil Kirchin.

BLOW Trio + DJs Joe W (Mind on Fire) + Lowell W (Out of Quiet/Reform Radio)Young Belgian band BLOW Trio are one of hottest new exports from the continent, fusing jazz, punk and dance music in their superbly enigmatic live stage shows. Sometimes referred to by fans as ‘Drum n Sax’, this young band cut their teeth in underground clubs across Belgium and the Netherlands and have been known to perform flash street performances in some very unusual settings.

Craig Charles Funk & Soul ClubWe’re taking the flavoursome funk far into the night as the Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club returns to Band on the Wall with acclaimed DJ, actor, presenter and funkster about town Craig Charles manning the decks, plus some very special guests performing live.

CollocutorCollocutor is the 7-piece brainchild of saxophonist Tamar Osborn. The project grew from her wish to simply write the music that wanted to be written, rather than focus on a particular audience or context. As such the compositions draw inspiration from the many genres encountered over the course of a varied career, ranging from jazz, afrobeat, Indian classical and Ethiopian roots to polyphonic choral music and minimalism – the link being primarily modal music with a transportive effect.

The African Salsa OrchestraThe African Salsa Orchestra, from Benin and Cuba and led by Michel Pinheiro, is a dancing machine that makes you walk from Cotonou to Cuba! The group takes you on a journey in which Manding rhythms, gospel, rhythm & blues and reggae combine with the stunning sounds of Cuban salsa – a mixture of voodoo cults and Western music.

New York Brass band opens mjf at the club with a full-on 8-piece New Orleans inspired gig. NYBB were one of the first bands to couple Pop with Traditional Brass music, so expect to hear their take on Candi Staton to Pharrell alongside traditional New Orleans Brass sounds.

Coming through the ranks of playing with other established Brass Bands, Loud Noises Brass are high on the radar as one of the latest exciting young bands to hit the circuit. Showing a different side to original Brass, fronted by powerful duo Kim Macari on trumpet and Riley Stone Lonergan on sax, this freewheeling quartet bring rousing moments of fierce intensity, improvisation, jazz and blues.

Inspired by the heavy drum beats of modern day second line brass, HBBB remixes modern jazz, Reggae, Drum’n’Bass and Funk with the sounds of a roaring New Orleans Brass Band. Listen out for their take on a Snoop Dog classic tune!

The music, ranging from characterful portraits with miniscule detail to epic, anthem- like chants, and his almost-out-of-control command of the drums ensure one of the most visually irresistible performances in jazz today. A fast-rising, young Mancunian quartet of ex-RNCM students inspired by rock, contemporary electronic music and Steve Reich, with soulful vocals spiralling over rich, funk-infused grooves.

Zee Guveya and the Heritage Survival Salon Perdu 20.00 - 22.00 Originally from Zimbabwe, the band’s Afro-fusion style draws on modern inf luences whilst upholding familiar, traditional rhythms. Zee toured Africa, America and Europe before relocating to the UK to form the Heritage Survival - a powerhouse of veteran performers weaving hypnotic, up-beat chimurenga songs and fast-beat sungura into compelling dance music.

World-renowned saxophonist Joshua Redman’s new group, the Still Dreaming quartet, features some of the most imaginative voices in contemporary jazz. Together, they’ll interpret Old and New Dreams, a renowned 1970/80s band of Ornette Coleman alumni that included Joshua’s father, Dewey Redman, along with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell.
