Dear Parents/Carer’s,

I hope this next batch of work finds you and your family well.

I continue to read Esio Trot, which can be found following the links in the worksheets.

As before, I stress this is in addition to any reading you are doing with your child. Remember, these are suggested activities and should supplement a diet of work that keeps your child engaged with learning and in good spirits in these unusual times.

Soundfiles and worksheets MUST NOT BE SHARED via any platform.

Here is a suggested timetable.

Lesson Activity Further challenges 1 In this phase I read Esio Trot part 6. Worksheet part 15

should involve a recap of esio trot part 5. Then students should think about and describe a time when they were so excited they could hardly sit still!

It is hoped this worksheet promotes a discussion of happy time and it is suggested that you model this by sharing a story when you were excited always.

2 Part 16a and 16b are a comprehension task and a task to contextualize the scene, making the student think about their own surroundings.

This task could lead into a discussion about the perfect living room set up or how they anticipate their own living room will look in the future in their own home.

3 Part 17 and 18 is more comprehension of the text and an opportunity to speculate and predict what might be happening next.

4 Part 13 is happily about a coincidental event at the Fisher household involving a tortoise! It links into ideas about being stuck indoors and themes about the current situation you may wish explore with your child.

As stated this worksheet could lead to discussion about being cooped-up and events in wider society but as ever, as parents you should be your own guide.

Welcome back folks. It may help you to recap the story so far by listening to me read Esio Trot again. It will especially help if you read Esio Trot part 5. Go and do this then we shall crack on.

Write some words that might describe Mr Hoppy’s mood. Add some labels about the things you see also.

Mr Hoppy is delighted that Mrs Silver said “I will be your slave for life” if his magic chant works on Alfie to make him grow bigger.

Write a description of a time you have been so excited you can’t sit still!! This could be the night before your birthday, a time you were going to meet up with a family member you have not seen for a long time or a film you couldn’t wait to see.

Write your description on a piece of paper.

Let’s hear the next bit of the story. I have read a big section of the book so you might want to pause and re-listen as we go. You can listen to Esio Trot Part 6 here.

Read this part of the story aloud to a parent or carer.

Now answer these questions about the text. Remember you can use paper at home if you cannot print this page. Underline the part of the text or point to it on the screen and then write it down

1. How is Mr Hoppy’s living room described? Is it big, small, large or tiny?

2. What furniture does Mr Hoppy have in his living room? 3. What did he go out and buy? 4. What did he write down from the telephone book? 5. How many pet-shops are there in Mr Hoppy’s town?

Page 4: Soundfiles and worksheets MUST NOT BE SHARED via any platform. · or tiny? 2. What furniture does Mr Hoppy have in his living room? 3. What did he go out and buy? 4. What did he write

In this section of the story we find out that Mr Hoppy doesn’t have much furniture in his living room.

Below is a typical floor plan pf a living room. Using this style of drawing, creat a floor plan of your front room. Label all the furniture you see, making sure they are drawn from above like this example.

It is best to do this actually sat in your living room but if you are not, try to draw from memory. Do not forget your labels! This is literacy after all.

Plain paper is best but you can use the back of this worksheet or any spare paper you have.

So we move on in the story. Read the section below aloud to parent or carer.

Firstly, answer these questions about what you have read.

1. How many days did it take for Mr Hoppy to visit all of the pet shops?

2. What is he choosing from the pet shops?

3. How many does he want?

Secondly, What on Earth is Mr Hoppy up to? Discuss with a parent or carer what Mr Hoppy might be planning to do. It sounds very strange whatever it is.

Once you have discussed it, write down what you think Mr. Hoppy’s plan is. Write it here or on sheet of paper.

SO Mr Hoppy is definitely up to something and I don’t mind telling you it seems he is up to no good!

Read the next part of the text to get more clues about what he is up to.

Answer these questions about what you have read.

1. In what two ways do tortoises differ? Discuss the meaning of the word differ with a parent or guardian.

2. Describe Alfie’s shell. 3. Mr Hoppy chose only what kind of tortoise for his great collection. 4. Mr Hoppy want tortoise of many different sizes, But he didn’t want any

that…what? 5. What does the pet shop owner tell Mr Hoppy the tortoises will need?

Sooooo!! Mr Hoppy wants tortoises that look like Alfie but are different sizes. Are there any more clues here about what Mr Hoppy is up to? Write down more detail about what YOU think Mr. Hoppy is up to.

Page 7: Soundfiles and worksheets MUST NOT BE SHARED via any platform. · or tiny? 2. What furniture does Mr Hoppy have in his living room? 3. What did he go out and buy? 4. What did he write

Good grief! Look at Mr. Hoppy’s front room! Write down all of the things you see in the picture and add words about how it might feel to be in the room with Mr Hoppy.

Remember worksheet 12b? Well, we looked at writing in “the first person,” meaning we write as if we are experiencing something ourselves and use words like I, Me, mine, ours, we and us.

Write a description of being in the room with Mr Hoppy. Describe the what you see, hear and perhaps smell. Do tortoises smell? My daughter’s doesn’t but we only have one!

Page 8: Soundfiles and worksheets MUST NOT BE SHARED via any platform. · or tiny? 2. What furniture does Mr Hoppy have in his living room? 3. What did he go out and buy? 4. What did he write

So this is how Roald Dahl describes the Scene in Mr Hoppy’s living room. Read it aloud to a parent or carer.

Page 9: Soundfiles and worksheets MUST NOT BE SHARED via any platform. · or tiny? 2. What furniture does Mr Hoppy have in his living room? 3. What did he go out and buy? 4. What did he write

In this section, Mr Hoppy returns to his old work place. What did he used to do as a job? Label all of the things you see in this picture.

The workbench looks like the Maker-lab! Ahhh, the Maker-lab. How I miss tinkering! How about drawing me a picture of something you would like to make if you were able to use the tools in the workshop! I know I have plenty of ideas. Think about all the things some of you have made.

Page 10: Soundfiles and worksheets MUST NOT BE SHARED via any platform. · or tiny? 2. What furniture does Mr Hoppy have in his living room? 3. What did he go out and buy? 4. What did he write

Now, Mr Hoppy’s plan is so complicated I have become quite confused with it all!

I have the 3 pictures below but I know I must have put them in the wrong order.

Draw a line connecting each picture to the correct description. Write the correct order using numbers 1,2 and 3 under the descriptions.

Mr Hoppy weighed Alfie to make sure he is thirteen ounces.

Mr Hoppy then tries to find

one that looks like Alfie and weighs only 2 ounces more.

Mr Hoppy uses his Tortoise catcher to lift Alfie up to his balcony.
