What is the essence of our community? What is so essential to Kol Shofar that we simply could not imagine our community existing without it? In Pirkei Avot, an ancient collection of rabbinic wisdom, we learn:

On three things the world stands: On Torah, on worship and on acts of loving kindness. This translates to three essential components of our lives at Kol Shofar:

• Praying Together

• Taking Care of Each Other/Sanctifying Life’s Moments

• Learning and Growing

Without collectively engaging in these three mitzvot, we could not be who we are as a community. Of course, this doesn’t mean that each of us are doing all of these things. But across the community, these things are happening in some form or another every day.

We pray and meditate together as a community: weekday morning minyan, Shabbat services, and meditation, gathering to pray for those who are ill, and Sunday morning tefillah with the Beit Binah community. We take care of each other: visiting those who are sick, bringing meals to those in need, reaching out to check in on each other just because. We celebrate birth, coming of age as Bar/Bat Mitzvah, weddings and other joyous occasions. And we honor the dead and comfort mourners.

As we take care of each other, we broaden our reach to others in greater Marin, our country and our world. We learn and grow, whether it is Yiddish, Torah yoga, Talmud or Judaism 101. The rabbis teach us that Torah and learning are like water: essential to our being.

A spiritual community who knows its essence will be stronger for it. Knowing what we should be doing means also knowing what we should leave to other organizations and groups to carry out in the world. That is a challenge for us all because we want to say yes to everything! But our professional and lay leadership know that focusing in on the essentials and performing these mizvot of prayer, taking care of each other and learning, the very best we can, is the essence of Kol Shofar.

How do we fulfill these mitzvot? By putting relationships first. As Genesis tells us, humanity was made in the image of God and we must see this Jewish value in how we relate to all people.

We fulfill these mitzvot by being our true selves in community with each other; to strive to be who we are, not who someone else is, or some other institution is. We do this by building strong relationships with those outside our community. We do this by being real with each other because frankly, life is too short to be otherwise.

I am grateful to be a part of the Kol Shofar essence. It would be hard to imagine life without it!

Why is a garden important?

The garden is a tangible, kinesthetic way to teach our community that it’s our responsibility to take care of the earth and each other. Growing organic food for local food banks and meals is a wonderful service and provides us with the opportunity reach out to our broader community, to partner with other religious and non-religious organizations, and perhaps to even engage our neighbors in a positive way.

How does our garden fit into the philosophy of repairing the world (Tikkun Olam)?

It’s about food. Access to healthy, organic produce is something many of us take for granted. But there are many families in our county for whom this food is not accessible.

How do you envision the garden’s future?

It could be an educational tool, engaging Beit Binah and JCC preschool children in garden education relevant to the traditions, culture, and values of the Jewish Conservative movement. It could be a place of gathering for our community to celebrate the many Jewish holidays and festivals that focus on harvest and food. It can also be a place for tikkun olam, since a primary goal of the garden is to produce enough food to support Southern Marin’s hot meal programs and local food banks.

How can people contribute to the garden?

The garden desperately needs volunteers to ensure it is able to continue and grow. We have a great plan for the space that would make it more accessible, add more beds, create a learning/gathering area, and even develop a biblical orchard, but without a strong group of volunteers we cannot move forward with our plan. Without additional volunteers, the continuation of the garden is in real question.

What if you don’t have a green thumb… are there still ways to help out?

YES! I don’t have a green thumb – I’m kinda flying by the seat of my pants trying various veggies in various beds. People interested in spending time out there watering, tending, weeding, etc. Anyone with a passion for this kind of project is welcome!

Joan LevisonBoard President

It’s clear when you walk into Kol Shofar that you are entering a beautiful, carefully-planned sacred space. The layout is warm and welcoming, the design and finish work are lovely, and the sanctuary is stunning and designed for a working spiritual community.

But it hasn’t always been that way. Many Kol Shofar members don’t know that our building was a middle school in the 1960s. How did we morph from these humble beginnings into an award-winning sacred space?

It all started when we moved to the long-vacant building in June 1984. The congregation settled into our first permanent home and grew steadily. By the late 1990s, our leadership recognized that it was becoming increasingly hard to “do Jewish” in a building no longer meeting the needs of a growing congregation. New members weren’t so interested in the haimish to which we’d all grown accustomed. As the carpets became more frayed and the kitchen seemed to grow smaller every month, we realized it was time to take a hard look at what our community truly needed.

In the early 2000’s, we searched Southern Marin for a new location but nothing appropriate was available. Since we owned 215 Blackfield Drive outright, the decision was made to re-envision the existing structure with a remodel and addition. It took two years of meetings to tease out the congregation-wide needs and wants of our community, as well as gather intelligence from architects, land-use attorneys, and neighbors. By 2005 we had a strategy.

Then came the perfect storm of setbacks.

First: some neighbors opposed our project. The conflict was resolved in the autumn of 2008, but the delay strained our relationship with the Town of Tiburon and meant we had to factor increased building costs and unforeseen legal expenses into our plan.

Second: the global financial crisis hit, significantly impacting our financing plans for the new building.

Lastly: our rabbi of 19 years, Rabbi Lavey Derby, left the synagogue.

We are a resilient community! Kol Shofar regrouped and, in February 2009, broke ground on remodeling our building. For 18 months, we operated in several different locations: Westminster Church held our Shabbat services, the Davidson School Annex was used for daily services and our administrative offices, and Kent Middle School accommodated Beit Binah and Tichon.

Just before Rosh Hashanah 2010, we carried our Torahs up Blackfield Road to our beautiful new spiritual home and danced to celebrate the journey. For the last six years, we’ve enjoyed the fruits of this labor. This space would not exist without the hard work and financial backing of many people who have been longstanding members of our community. Kol Shofar is grateful to have their very generous support.

B’shalom,

Jonathan EmanuelDirector ofYouth Education & Family Engagement

The winter days of the Jewish calendar are always a special time, full of hope, awakening and potential for new life.

As the days get longer and the nights shorten, we have a greater opportunity to engage with one another, to try new things and create new realities for ourselves and those around us.

The Jewish calendar provides moments to truly realize our own potential, and that of the world’s.

• On Tu B’shvat we honor and explore the importance of nature in sustaining life as wecelebrate the birthday of the Trees.

• On Purim we are able to examine how the day to day decisions of the few and the bravecan influence an entire community or society.

• On Pesah we are able to explore what it means to be a free people, and how we candirectly change the aspects of our lives that bind us.

These festivals and their meanings are explored in Kol Shofar’s education programs. We will be celebrating these festivals together, finding new ways to unlock the true potential of our community to impact our own lives and the world as a whole. We will explore how lucky we are to have each other to support changes in our lives, and how we can act in a mindful way with one another.

At Kol Shofar, we put the community and caring for one another first. Only then are we able to truly unlock our potential as Jews, citizens and family. May the Spring bring new learning, life and friendship.

Learning and Family Programs

Special Program: Jewish Ethics and PoliticsTo coincide with the 2016 election, Jonathan created and taught an elective for the Tichon program (7 - 12th grade) on Jewish and Politics.

The class looked closely at how debate and ethical disagreement is necessary as we struggle with the great issues of our times. Without caring and honoring one another and our differences, along with our commonalities, we lose the essence of what allows us to be who we are, and the potential for new ideas and progress.

A Student’s Perspective: Sonia LachterI’ve been looking forward to Beit Binah and Tichon at Kol Shofar every week since first grade. As I reflect on this past semester before I leave to study in Israel, Kol Shofar stands out in part because I was a madricha, tutoring Hebrew.

Shifting from a student to a teacher has been a valuable experience. I haven’t stopped being a student though, taking Rabbi Leider’s Mishnah class as well as other thought provoking electives at Tichon. As a co-president of the Marin United Synagogues Youth (USY) chapter, I’ve had the opportunity to not only organize and attend fun events, but to experience being a leader and enjoy how each new member falls in love with USY.

For me Kol Shofar will always be a place where I can teach, learn, lead, and grow.

I have been reading “The People and the Books” by Adam Kirsch. It’s a fascinating collection of essays on 18 classics of Jewish literature. The essay on Pirket Avot, Wisdom of our Fathers, contains this gem: “the Torah lives in a perpetual present”.

Pirket Avot opposes the nature of history as a series of setbacks and advances. It’s not concerned with political history and not concerned with that way of understanding the past. It’s really not interested in past or future at all but rather with Torah (pg.113-114).

I love the idea of living in a “perpetual present” because it is a good description of Mindfulness and a strong suggestion as to why Mindfulness is the essence of Judaism. The genius of our tradition is that we are taught to do and that as a result of that we will understand why we are doing. We act as a way to learn, but what should our consciousness be when we act? It seems to me that the first part, the doing should be with our full attention and in the moment. It seems pointless to perform a mitzvah while thinking about dinner or anything other than what we are doing. Mindfulness helps us to do just that. It’s paying attention to the present moment without judgment, fully present. We live in the present, like the Torah, and isn’t that how we want to live our lives: present in this moment for what is happening now.

Rabbi Chai Levy

We find ourselves living in an era of uncertainty. The world is changing rapidly, and unprecedented realities are emerging. The natural response might be to constrict in fear and anger, to isolate ourselves in cynicism, and to sink into the despair of the daily news.

How do we respond to uncertainty and fear in ways that are spiritually wise? Now more than ever, we need spiritual community.

When we come together in Jewish community to pray, to meditate, to learn Torah, to sing, and to share, we connect with each other, with the Divine Presence, and with our enduring Jewish values.

We restore our hope, our faith in the goodness of the world, and our trust in the goodness of humanity. We renew our compassion. We find a sense of equanimity. We open our hearts and feel love and find refuge. We discover our resilience and our creativity. We get inspired and energized to make change, to speak out, to act, to create beauty, to manifest loving kindness.

We need this always, but especially now. The Center for Jewish Spirituality at Kol Shofar offers many such opportunities.
