Dear Friends,

We are nearly breathless with excitement, and anxious to inform you about all the wonderful things that are developing in your favorite school of music. We hope you will be pleased to hear about each of these things:

First, our School opened its doors in September of 1912 and we just welcomed our 100th incoming class of music students—146 exceptionally bright, capable, and dedicated young student musicians who have already impressed us as the strongest incoming class to date. This all means that we’ll begin celebrating the School’s Centennial in September of 2012—one year from now. A committee has been making plans for that celebration which will feature guest artists, a series of commissions of new works, and much more. The celebrations will culminate in May, 2013, when our choruses and symphony orchestra will premiere a new work of Chicagoan Augusta Read Thomas and perform Beethoven’s magnificent Symphony No. 9 in Orchestra Hall! It’ll be a night, and a year, to remember.

Second, DePaul University has completed five years of its planned eight-year comprehensive campaign, building toward a target of $250,000,000. The good news is that you and others have already been so generous that we’ve passed $200,000,000 in gifts and pledges; the bad news is that we still have almost $50,000,000 to go! The School of Music has already secured $15,000,000, with hopes to build that to at least $22,000,000 in three more years. Much of the University’s campaign goal—over $100,000,000 will be designated for scholarship support, but some of the rest is being raised in support of new facilities for The Theatre School and the School of Music!

That’s the third exciting piece of news. We are in the design phase for all new and state-of-the-art music facilities that will be built right here at Fullerton and Halsted in the years just ahead, turning our 4.1 acre site into a music campus and giving us underground event parking. For the first time, our patrons will be able to come to a concert and not have to circle the neighborhood in search of a parking spot. More important, for the first time the extremely talented music students who come to DePaul will be able to pursue their art in facilities that were designed for their art!

As I say, we are nearly breathless with excitement at each of these developments. We hope you can share our excitement, that you’ll share in our Centennial celebrations and participate in our campaign, and especially that you’ll be here too see the all-new facilities that we will be opening in 2015 and 2016. It’s truly an historic time for what we think has become an extraordinary school. Thanks for believing in us!

Of Note2010-11 Highlights

1. Mark O’Connor Visits DePaul

The highly acclaimed and Grammy winning composer and violin/fiddle virtuoso Mark O’Connor visited the school in March. Widely known as one of America’s most inventive and innovative composers, O’Connor gave a lecture/demonstration during which he discussed and demonstrated his American style of string playing, his improvisational abilities and his process of composition. He also gave a lecture for string teachers and students on The O’Connor String Method which is a series of sequenced books designed to guide students gradually through the development of pedagogical and musical techniques necessary to become a proficient, well-rounded musician through a carefully planned succession of pieces.

2. “Live from the Mayne Stage”

DePaul School of Music faculty members performed in a series of Sunday morning concerts for WFMT radio, hosted by Dennis Moore. The concerts were part of the series called, “Live from the Mayne Stage” which showcased a variety of acclaimed classical soloists and top ensembles from the Chicago area, performing for a live audience. The concerts were broadcast on WFMT as well as online at wfmt.org. DePaul faculty who performed in the concerts were: Stephen Balderston, cello; Julia Bentley, mezzo-soprano; Alban “Kit” Bridges, piano; Jane Bunnell, mezzo-soprano; Jennifer Clippert, flute; Mark Colby, tenor saxophone; Julie DeRoche, clarinet; Ilya Kaler, violin; Bob Lark, jazz trumpet & flugelhorn; Jason Moy, harpsichord;

Bob Palmieri, jazz guitar; Clayton Parr, tenor; Bob Rummage, drum set; Kelly Sill, jazz bass; Rami Solomonow, viola; Kyomi Sugimura, piano; Janet Sung, violin; and George Vatchnadze, piano.

3. “Much Ado” About a Theatre School and School of Music Collaboration

Guitar students of faculty member Mark Maxwell performed in The Theatre School’s production of MuchAdoAboutNothing. The students, Brandon Acker, Seth Beavis and Louis Makarewicz, provided nearly all of the music, live and onstage, as costumed actors in the play. This represented a significant collaboration between The Theatre School and the School of Music in that Mark Maxwell participated in the planning, composing/arranging and rehearsing of the guitarists as well as the theatre students.

4. DePaul and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

In addition to the many DePaul faculty members and alumni who perform on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra stage throughout the year, our connection with the CSO grew this year through a number of events in which our students, faculty and alumni participated. The first, on January 29, occurred when pianist Emanuel Ax visited DePaul Community Music Division as a part of the kick-off of the CitizenMusician initiative. Ax participated in the class of beginning piano students, ages 6-8, and then

performed the theme and several variations of Schubert’s Variations in B-flat Major. As a part of the same celebration, viola faculty member Rami Solomonow performed a chamber music program with Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, Robert Chen and Anthony McGill at Symphony Center.

In March, ten DePaul music education students participated in the CSO’s Institute for Learning, Access and Training’s new program OnceUponaSymphony. The concerts are designed to introduce children ages 3-5 to the wonders of classical music. Our music education students were responsible for the pre-concert activities that included instrumental exploration, soundscape design and movement activities that incorporated some of the music being performed. Each pre-concert activity helped the children relate more meaningfully to the performance. The music education students who participated were: Krystina Andreoli, Amanda Astkins, Will Brocker, Christina Ceballos, Eric Damitz, Betsy Ko, Elizabeth Ro, Uriel Rotstein, Rebecca Rudy and Elizabeth Weber. Music education coordinator Jacki Kelly-McHale also served as the music education consultant for the project. Alumnus Joe Clark (2010) also participated in OnceUponaSymphony, arranging the music for the concert.

5. Musica nelle Marche and Summer Study in Urbania, Italy

Once again this summer, lucky DePaul voice students traveled to Italy to study the Italian language, culture and music. The program, called Musica nelle Marche, consists of a one-month

stay in Urbania, where voice faculty member Linda Hirt teaches at the Centro Studi Italiani, a language school offering specialized programs in Italian opera. Linda and seven students performed six concerts throughout the Marche region. Many of the students receive funds from the Vittorio Angeli scholarship, a fund that Linda and Geoff Hirt established to help students financially with this study abroad trip.

6. DePaul A Cappella wins again in Wales

DePaul A Cappella, directed by Dr. Clayton Parr, director of choral activities, once again competed at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod competition in Wales in July, 2011.

The ensemble placed second in the Folk Song Choirs category and third in Youth Choirs. Our students had success in the solo competitions as well – junior Carl Glick placed third in the musical theatre category and freshman Aleksandra Zivanovic placed third in folk song solo, singing songs from her native Serbia. Both were honored to perform on the Pavilion stage as finalists. Congratulations!

He received his degree in English and history from the University of California at Los Angeles and then embarked on a career in music criticism. After less than 10 years working at publications in Hollywood and Akron, Ohio, von Rhein’s outstanding work landed him a highly coveted role at the Chicago Tribune.

In addition to critiquing performances of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera and the Chicago Opera Theater, he has reviewed many limited engagements of international touring companies as well as volumes of local and regional ensembles. Taking his readers behind the curtain, von Rhein has written extensively about the often dramatic developments at these world-class institutions, from their striking musicians to their exacting conductors.

Campaign ReportThe Campaign for DePaul University

On May 20, 2010, DePaul University announced the public phase of the largest capital campaign in its 113-year history. The Many

Dreams, One Mission Campaign for DePaul University will raise $250 million to enhance, expand and assure DePaul’s ability to deliver on its founding promise: to help make dreams come true by providing an excellent education for any talented student who seeks it.

The Many Dreams, One Mission Campaign will invest $100 million to expand resources available for student financial assistance; direct $37 million to faculty support; designate $38 million for new, optimized educational facilities, including much-needed Music and Theatre venues in Lincoln Park; and dedicate $75 million to new and enhanced programs for community outreach and impact.

The campaign reached the $200 million mark at the end of June and, as of September 1, 2011, $201,433,342 has been raised, 82% of the $250 million goal. Thanks to the support of so many alumni and friends of the University, DePaul is that much closer to making many more dreams become a reality.

The Performing Arts Campaign

As part of the Many Dreams, One Mission Campaign, the President and the Board of Trustees have made a commitment to enhance the performing arts at DePaul, seeking funding for scholarships, programmatic support and new facilities for the School of Music and The Theatre School. The new facilities

represent history in the making. For the first time, the School of Music and The Theatre School will be housed in facilities that are specifically designed to serve the work and artistry of the students, faculty and staff in these disciplines.

On June 1, 2011, the University community celebrated the first step in making these new facilities a reality by breaking ground for the new Theatre School building. Designed by internationally renowned architectural firm Pelli Clarke Pelli, The Theatre School’s new facilities are designed to showcase the varied and dynamic activities that characterize the school, its students and

faculty. It will house a 250-seat theatre, a 100-seat flexible theatre, as well as administrative and faculty offices, classrooms, rehearsal spaces, design studios, workshops and the school’s script library. Situated on the corner of Fullerton and Racine in Lincoln Park, the new building is expected to be completed in the summer of 2013, in time for the start of the academic year in September.

The groundbreaking in June was the first of several opportunities in the coming years to celebrate the performing arts at DePaul. Plans for the School of Music call for a new state-of-the-art facility to be situated on Halsted, which will house a new concert hall. (This new facility will occupy the site of the current McGaw Hall, which will be razed). The current Music administration building will be renovated and the current Concert Hall will be transformed into an Opera Hall, renovated to serve as a training and performance facility for the opera program. Together these three facilities will fully address the physical space requirements of a world-class teaching and performing organization and will allow the School of Music to reach its full potential. The School of Music is expected to break ground for its new facility in early 2013.

As of September 1, 2011, the Performing Arts Campaign has raised $21.3 million, 65% of its $33 million goal. Of this amount, $6.4 million has been raised for scholarships (toward a scholarship goal of $8 million), $2.6 million has been raised for programmatic support ($5 million goal), and $12.2 million has been raised for the new facilities ($20 million goal).

The Performing Arts Campaign activity is led by a dedicated committee of volunteers—alumni and friends of both schools from the professional, corporate, civic and philanthropic communities. Co-chaired by Life Trustees Jim Denny and Sondra Healy and Music Advisory Board member Mary Pat Hay, the Performing Arts Campaign Committee is key to the success of this campaign, and we are grateful for their leadership and the dedicated efforts of all the Committee members on behalf of the Performing Arts at DePaul.

why i give

“Dad always spoke of DePaul as a special place having been a proud graduate of DePaul College of Law 1933. After he died in 1992, I wanted to do something in his honor. My chance meeting with Dean Don Casey at Don Giovanni led to my first contribution to the School of Music—The Ray, Ruth, and Rosemary Schnell Keyboard Lab—and other projects have followed.

What draws me to DePaul is the rising reputation of the School of Music as well as the Vincentian values at DePaul. Under the leadership of Father Cortelyou and Father Richardson, and now Father Holtschneider, the School of Music has a heritage which can only continue to grow.

I believe strongly in donations in the NOW as I can see for myself the benefits in actions. I also believe in having DePaul School of Music in my will for the coming generations.”

why i give

“Since joining the voice faculty at DePaul University, we have been struck by the generosity of spirit, time and investment given by the administration, staff, faculty and patrons. The commitment to the School of Music and the arts is tremendous and the community within is a very special one. Through our teaching and through our giving we make an investment in our students, enabling them to afford all the wonders DePaul has to offer.”

Jane Bunnell & Marc Embree, Voice Faculty

why i give

“I can connect nearly every aspect of my career in music to DePaul so it is important to me that I give back as much as possible. I have been fortunate enough to have had many different performing opportunities as well as a highly-rewarding teaching career and none of it would have been possible without the education and support I received at DePaul. Seeing how the School of Music has grown in stature makes me a very proud Double Demon!”

why i give

“Giving is a moral imperative in life. The Vincentian philosophy that is exemplified at DePaul calls all of us to be better stewards of one another. To have been given the gift of education at DePaul and to have been allowed to prosper and grow over the years requires a commitment to the next generation. While we are faced with many decisions and choices in life, supporting education, especially at an institution like the School of Music, can have a far-reaching

affect on the students at the school and our society as a whole. The very gift of scholarship is exponential and hard to measure, though history tells us that by creating opportunities for those who come after us can make the world a better place. The gift of music and the gift of an education at DePaul will outlast any of the material possessions we might otherwise choose to spend our income on.”
