A journey through the Ages…As human beings continue
to evolve and change their way of being and doing things, we invite you to join us for a brief journey through time as we visit the Ages of:
- Industrialisation;
- Information;
- Attention;
- Knowledge.
and reflect on where we are as a species right now and what happens next…
Industrial Age (1750 – 1900)
- From manual labour and animal-based economy to machine-based manufacturing.
- Steam power, rather than animal labor, water or wind power.
- Shift from artisans who made complete products to production line factories
- Modes of transportation encouraged rapid rates of change.
- The Industrial Revolution – A major turning point in human history
Information Age
- Shift from traditional Industrial Revolution Industries, to an economy based on information.
- Transfer of information freely, instant access to knowledge
1957: The USSR launched Sputnik, start of global telecoms
1958: US Dept of Defence established ARPA focussed on networking and communications technology.
1962: Foundations laid for the ARPANET. Computer & communication networks
1971: Email invented.
1972: First public demonstration of ARPANET proved a huge success.
1973: International connections to ARPANET- global communication became a reality
1976: BBS (electronic “Bulletin Board System”) developed; social discussion, on-line games
1991: World Wide Web launched.
1988: IRC (Internet Relay Chat) created.
1999: Peer-to-Peer and social media file-sharing applications become available.
1997: The first social networking website, Six Degrees is released
- “Computer Age” and the “Information Era”.
Attention Age (2000 –
- Marked ability for individuals to instantly create and consume and share information through social media
- Increasing Commoditization of attention with abundance of available information on Internet
- Emergence of Web 2.0 technologies
- Search vs. subscription:.
Information is more user-focused and preference targeted
Tools like RSS subscribe to user preferred content
- Social media platforms, allow sharing of content through
Blogs,
Wikis
Facebook,
MySpace,
YouTube,
Twitter - real time transmission of content & news
Del.icio.us and Digg
Knowledge Age (2000 –
- Knowledge and ideas become the main source of economic growth, (more important than land, labour, money or other tangible resources).
- The late 20th century was a period of major social, economic and political changes.
- Knowledge is a form of energy, a system of networks and flows:
Knowledge is defined, and valued for what it can do.
This shift to the Knowledge Age, has major implications and potential.
- New patterns of work and new business practices have developed
Knowledge is produced by collaborative groups of people with complementary expertise for specific purposes ‘collectivising intelligence’
Global Crisis Alert…
2002: The Millennium Project was commissioned by the UN Secretary-General
2000: The United Nations Millennium Declaration, to realise the 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
2007- 2009: Global Recession impacts - fewer financial resources available to help realise the MDGs by 2015.
2010: 5 year countdown to realise the MDGs, and the pressure is on to implement an effective turnaround
The Industrial Revolution Age impacted on our very way of existing as a species – with some alarming and dangerous consequences for ourselves and the planet
The Impact and long-term consequences of our current way of being is only now being realised
And that working together as a united, global community is the only way to turn this around

Oct 2009: a Definition of a Way of Being and a Way of Working together is defined after much planning and talking.
