Our 125th Year is coming to an end and I hope many Old Girls have

been able to reconnect with their friends, or their school, at some of the events throughout the year.

‘Reconnecting’ has been a focus of the school, and we have heard many great stories from the Old Girl gatherings that were held around Australia and the

world. We thoroughly enjoyed our ‘Back to Kambala Day’ on 18

November when Old Girls gathered at school for a day of thanksgiving and camaraderie. We will post some photos online for those who were unable to attend so please look out for them on the Kambala Old Girls’ website, accessed in Publications and Photos, then Photo Board. We will include a story in the next issue of the Soubeiran.

This year’s Vintage Lunch was an enormous success with almost 80 ladies returning to have a ‘chat’ and a delicious lunch in the dining room. Betsey (Harvey) Hunt ‘52 reminded us about the importance of the friendships that were made at school and have endured throughout the ups and downs of life. Peggy (Winning) Formosa ‘72 and the Committee work very hard behind the scenes to host these events and its so lovely when they are well attended and appreciated.

Although many Old Girls regularly meet with their school friends, KOGU continue to support their communication and connection through various events. Some of these include current students (Gibbons Shield Public Speaking and the Gibbons Shield for sport) while others embrace the community (Old Girls’ Tennis Day and Melbourne Cup). The Committee are working towards a Reunion Package that will simplify the task of organising a reunion and hopefully enhance the experience for everyone.

The Melbourne Cup High Tea this year was a really charming day held in the Tivoli Drawing Room and attended by many Old Girls, friends and other parents. It’s such a special

room for any Old Girl, and visitors always enjoy its ambience.

As communication continues to be one of our main concerns, the Committee are really pleased with the response to our request for contact details and your appreciation that we cannot sustain hard-copy mail outs for all KOGU functions. We endeavour to improve communication and ensure that all Old Girls are able to retrieve information in a timely manner.

We have noted that many Old Girls have also highlighted their interest in other aspects of KOGU including mentoring, sport or the Committee. I encourage you to pursue your interests and make contact with KOGU via Anne Harris in the KOGU office. There are many rewarding experiences to be had from being involved.

The Committee are also very proud that the school’s association with The Infants’ Home (formerly Ashfield Infants’ Home) has strengthened this year. KOGU are aware that so many Old Girls independently maintain support of The Infants’ Home. Now current Kambala students will continue to benefit through the association and the Home can rely on our ongoing support.

As always the Committee welcome any suggestions and assistance, and I am happy to discuss any matters. Please note there is a list of KOGU dates on Potentiality and the website and you can contact Anne Harris in the KOGU Office for any Old Girl matter on 9388 6888, 0412 112 063 or email [email protected]

VOL 6 , DECEMBER 2012 —

1983 Boarders Reunion

On a crisp and wet Saturday in June, a group from the Class

of 1983 Boarders reunited for a dinner and catch-up in Canberra. The weekend was graciously hosted by Sam (Nuthall) and Peter Cusack. Saturday provided much catching up, laughing and reminiscing over photos from the past. This all continued on Sunday morning over breakfast at the Cusack’s, completing a weekend of fun and friendship.

Whilst some of the group are still in regular contact, it was the chance to catch up for others who has not seen each other for many years, and a great opportunity to update everyone on news of families, careers and lives. There was significant travel undertaken in order to attend – from

as far afield as Tasmania, Condobolin, Trangie, Forbes, and Adelong, as well as Sydney.

As the 30 year reunion falls next year, the girls thought that a get-together a year out may provide the necessary impetus for organising a larger gathering next year. Sam, Jenny, Sarah and Jo are mothers of current and past Kambala boarder and day girls. Kambala connections – alive and well!

1974 Impromptu Lunch

In late October Louise (Rothe) Franklin ‘74 hosted an impromptu

‘Kamabla Lunch’ with some of the Old Girls, mostly from 1974. A large number attending the gathering were also boarders.

On the last Friday of Term 2, Kambala hosted the 125th

Anniversary Joyce Gibbons Public Speaking events. The entire Senior School gathered to hear both Junior and Senior participants speaking on topics such as sleep, dreams, music, childhood, judging others, ‘stepping stones’ and overcoming adversity.

Participants in the Junior section were Jade Hazan, Madeline Lockhart, Victoria Tsingos (Junior prize recipient) and in the Senior section – Grace Franki (Senior prize recipient), Helena Hu and Claudia Pan. Ms Josephine Martin (English Department), who coaches debating and public speaking, prepared the girls for the competition and offered behind the scenes support to the speakers. It was wonderful to see the

newest members of the Senior School – Year 7 – partake in the competition.

The Kambala Old Girl’s Union sponsors the Joyce Gibbons Public Speaking each year, providing the adjudication and prizes. This year’s adjudicators were Heather Robson ‘04, Grace Mathew ‘05, and Annie Handmer ‘11, while Julie (Kelly) Reid ‘77 (KOGU President) and Meredyth (Mason) Grogan ‘79 coordinated the event.

Following the presentations Kambala’s Director of Curriculum, Ms Carolyn Gavel and Kambala Director of Public Relations, Mrs Margaret Esdaile joined the Old Girls and Speakers in the Tivoli Drawing Room for morning tea, which gave the girls an opportunity to discuss their scores and feedback with the adjudicators.

The Infants’ Home and Kambala have come a long way since their

association began in 1902. The Infants’ Home began as an orphanage and hospital in Darlinghurst, caring for abandoned mothers and babies, then moved to Ashfield in 1876, a few years before Miss Gurney founded Kambala in Woollahra.

In 1908 the Kambala Union decided to make endowments to a Cot Fund at the Infants’ Home in perpetuity called the Gurney-Soubeiran Cot.

Since then support for the home as taken many forms – clothes, cot covers, toys, equipment, annual cash donations and parties for the children. By the 1950’s while Miss Hawthorne

was head mistress, Kambala hosted dances to raise money for the annual endowment. These parties were reported in the Sydney Morning Herald giving lavish descriptions of the decorations and what everyone wore, including, “Miss Fifi Hawthorne wore a gown of wine coloured, crushed velvet.” In the 1950’s children’s parties were hosted at the original Massie House on Coolong Road, so toys were presented to the children from the Home who attended.

In 2012, The Home is now a centre of excellence in early childhood education and care and specialises in helping children and families facing physical, social or financial hardship.

Junior SchoolMs Jenny Holt, Head of Junior School, received 26 written ‘special requests’ from Year 6 girls, explaining why each would like to visit and work at the Infants’ Home. This was prompted by a wonderful and inspiring presentation at Kambala by Anita Kumar, CEO of the Infants’ Home. So on 26 November, our Junior School Girls read and engaged in other activities at the Infants’ Home. Photos and details will appear on Kambala View and the KOGU website.

Senior SchoolIn the Senior School, the Infants’ Home has now been incorporated into the Duke of Edinburgh program, and the Charity Prefects are organising several events in support. Girls from Year 9 studying Social Justice in Modern Australia, will be visiting to conduct projects on recycling, sustainability and woodwork with the children.

KOGU and Julie Reid have been instrumental in growing and maintaining this wonderful association and contribution to the life and community at both Kambala and the Infants’ Home.

Senior Athletics Champion 2012, Kambala ties...

I t was wonderful to see the Old Girls and current parents once again

playing on the Kambala Courts. The Old Girls’ Union Committee hoped to increase interest in the event on the new courts and the capacity crowd on the day was a terrific result with ten Old Girls and 14 current parents playing on the KOGU courts.

It was a very successful function, with a lovely, enthusiastic group of ladies enjoying both the tennis and the luncheon on such a glorious autumn day.

The overall winner was current parent Melissa Suriano, who received a hand woven basket and coffee donated by Louise (Rothe) Franklin ‘74 and other gifts donated by Kambala Outfitters. The winner of the Old Girls’ Hawthorne Cup was Cassandra (Patterson) Macfarlan ‘86. Julie (Kelly) Reid ‘77 (KOGU President) presented Cassandra with the Hawthorne Cup and other gifts at the conclusion of the luncheon.

During the day both Kambala Director of Public Relations, Mrs Margaret Esdaile, and Kambala Principal, Mrs Margaret White visited the KOGU Courts or the Tivoli Drawing Room to meet and chat with the players, particularly ensuring that the Old Girls felt very welcomed back at the School.

Each year KOGU supports the Sports Department by providing prizes to

the 100 metre champions in the pool and on the track for both Junior and Senior School. In May, at a Senior School Assembly, the Sports Awards were presented. KOGU Committee Member, Julia (McCathie) Bakewell ‘81, very proudly presented her very sporty niece, Madeleine (Maddie) McCathie, with the 2012 KOGU 100m Senior Athletics Champion prize.

This November, Maddie attended the trials for the NSW Under 17 Netball team. She has been selected as one of 12 girls from a pool of 64 of the State’s premier players. Maddie will now play in the Australian Championships in Darwin in April 2013. We are all thrilled for Maddie and will be following her netball career.

able to provide an insight into what it means to be part of the Kambala Community as he has experienced not only his mother but also his daughters being educated at the School. Mr Small also congratulated Mrs Margaret White on her outstanding leadership of the School during her 13 years as Principal. He noted that Margaret had provided the School with a window of twelve months to identify an appropriately qualified person to lead the School in the next phase.

Mrs Margaret White also attended the lunch and responded to Betsey (Harvey) Hunt’s proposal. Mrs White

went on to observe that at the end of 2013 she will have witnessed a year group move from Prep to Year 12, an achievement of which she is justifiably proud. Although she attended a Melbourne school, Mrs White pointed out she feels very much a part of the Kambala Community. History will dictate that Mrs White has made a strong contribution on many fronts within the School, and especially in providing a platform for the Old Girls Union to remain relevant.

Mrs White also noted that she had attended Kambala Old Girl reunions overseas and interstate during the last

12 months, and it brought to mind the words of the School song: Our paths may scatter all the worlds wide spaces.

Letters expressing delight at the spirit of the gathering and the enjoyment of the food provided were especially gratifying. A special thanks to Peggy (Winning) Formosa ‘72 for her ongoing effort to coordinate all the things that make a successful luncheon happen. The Old Girls’ Committee enjoyed the occasion as much as those attending and all look forward to next year’s Vintage Luncheon, scheduled for the last Wednesday in October, 2013.

The Kambala OGU held it’s 14th Vintage Lunch on Wednesday,

31 October, in the Tivoli Dining room. Attendance this year was particularly strong with almost 80 Old Girls joining the celebration.

It was especially pleasing to see the turnout from the 1947 year group, with Judy (King) Hawley stepping up to say Grace. The 1961 girls also joined for the first time and obviously enjoyed the occasion. Betsey (Harvey) Hunt ‘52, travelling up from Harrow,

Victoria, provided the proposal to the school and did so with great passion.

Our 2012 luncheon included Old Girls who had travelled long distances to be with us. Interstate visitors included those from Queensland, Victoria and South Australia, as well as many from country New South Wales, the Southern Highlands and the Blue Mountains.

The spirit over lunch justified the effort made to create this Vintage Lunch opportunity. The purpose of the lunch is to provide an annual

occasion to come together and maintain contact with one another. Kambala continues to generously support this function and considers it an important part of the Kambala School fabric.

President of the Kambala School Council, Mr Philip Small, again attended in the dual capacities of President and representing his mother Mrs Pamela (Mortlock) Small ‘45 (who was unable to attend). Mr Small was

The Foyer of the Ann and John Lewis Music Centre provided a beautiful

backdrop to the Year 11 Morning Tea hosted by KOGU on Tuesday 5 June.

Cherie (Lucas) Tsingos ‘86 a KOGU VP did a magnificent job of running the event with Pen (Lehmann) Donaldson ‘81. We were very fortunate to have

two of the 2011 cohort return to address the girls, Maxine Verebes

and Carmen Lee.

Maxine was part of the class of 2011. She was well remembered as Gurney House captain in Year 12 and House Officer in Year 11. She was also involved in Sport and Debating. Maxine has been studying Commerce Liberal Studies, on scholarship, at The University of Sydney.

Carmen also participated in many extra-curricular activities such as netball, two Kambala Orchestras and Future Problem Solving. She is currently studying at UNSW

with a Finance Co-op scholarship and working as a receptionist at a tutoring college.

Maxine and Carmen made the event a fascinating and successful one, both personable and passionate girls, a credit to their hardwork, Kambala and their friends and families.

The Year 11 girls welcomed the opportunity to question them after their talks. Both told us how much they enjoyed returning to Kambala and appreciated the opportunity to give something back to the School.

Melbourne Cup high TeaI t was less than ‘six degrees

The Melbourne Cup High Tea was a true Kambala Community event, welcoming current parents, Old Girls and friends from outside Kambala. The room was full of great conversation, giggles and a sideways glance for ‘the Race that stops the Nation’. Ladies and one gentleman, genteelly sipped champagne and tea and supped on the sumptuous food prepared by Old Girl and current Year 7 parent, Ursula Zaoui ‘85. Thank you for the wonderful efforts by KOGU and Kambala representatives to make for a memorable afternoon… and see you next year.

Drama and Comedy – Louise McDonald ‘08

A t the end of Term 3, 2012, the Kambala Community, past and

present joined to thank Jayne Symon for her extraordinary contribution to Kambala and hundreds of girls during 36 years of teaching Drama, French, Religious Education and other subjects. Her most significant contribution as Head of Drama will never be forgotten by most of us.

It’s easily forgotten that teachers essentially have the power to make a difference in people’s lives, to ‘plant the seed’ that inspires a life course. The seed they plant may be a small kernel but it’s no small feat.

The first play, I ever had the chance to direct was given to me by Jayne in the house plays which she used to run annually back then. It was an incredible cloud nine experience, a shape-shifting event in my life. I directed the comedy thriller, Which Little Girl

is Going to be Next for Wentworth, and spent the week that I should have been studying for HSC assessments sourcing the appropriate materials for my set design. I remember the collective ‘wow’ that hushed across the audience when the velvet curtains opened and this experience, gave me the confident knowledge that I wanted to, and was able, to direct theatre. Only a few years later I graduated from NIDA as a director and went straight on to work with some of the key players who defined the theatre for the 21st Century. The critical thinking required when I direct, I can trace all the way back to the rigorous discussions Jaynie conducted with us in class the next day after taking us out to a wonderful night of theatre. I was taught in Jaynie’s class ‘how’ to look at the theatre and each creative component, which when working together, makes for an entire world.

And now I am only too proud to be embarking on a parallel career as a drama teacher myself, to educate, inspire and make a lasting impression on young people just like you have.

— Laurisa Poulos ‘97

My first film project was made for the HSC and led me to a degree in media and film. In the ten years since leaving school I have worked on major productions, been mentored by some of Australia’s leading film producers and produced many short films. Currently I am writing from Mexico where I’ve come to secure finance and casting for my first feature film, set in both Mexico and Australia. I thank Ms Symon for her guidance and encouragement to be daring and different during the times of doubt.

— Monique de Groot ‘02

“Imagine being confined to an inescapable space, where all of your hidden, little traits become exposed. Add two strangers and you’ve got yourself stuck in an unavoidably awkward situation. Sticky Feet is a self-contained, gritty, new physical comedy. It explores our, often hidden, inner weirdo.”

Quite a number of Kambala Old Girls are studying now at

Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Bathurst, particularly Communications and Journalism. This year, Louise graduated with a BA in Communication (Theatre/Media). Her love for physical comedy led to her co-creation and performance in Sticky Feet (2012) performed as a part of CSU’s creative arts festival, SPRUNG Festival. She has formed Sticky Feet Productions and with her colleagues from CSU, and we are pleased to congratulate them for winning the prestigious Blair Milan Scholarship awarded by the Australian Institute for the Performing Arts.

She has worked with both Makhampom Foundation in Northern Thailand and Creative Corners in Bolivia. Lou hopes to continue her work as a physical comedian and use her skills in community theatre

facilitation, both locally and abroad. She will be performing at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Tasmanian Circus Festival early in 2013.
