Dear SOS Sailors,

A committee that included Mick Cornell, Dee Doyle, Tom Olchefske, Ian Sanderson, Catherine Starnes and I, Julie Stauss, developed this songbook. We met at least eight times over the summer and fall of 1997 for dinner, a little red wine and lots of singing. We identified a variety of songs that includes something for everyone: from those who don’t know much about music to those who can harmonize.

We had help from others along the way: Beth Dumesco, Bob Fifer, Richard Green, Bill Small, and Lindsay Courtney, Ron Pence who worked on the layout. The SOS Skipper’s Advisory Committee covered many of the expenses and is providing this book to all skippers to have on board during SOS cruises.

Mick, Dee, Ian, Tom, Catherine and I all hope you have as much fun using this songbook as we had putting it together! See you at the next sing-a-long!

Julie Stauss

Dear 2004 SOS Sailors: In 2004, we have been looking for ways to make SOS raft-ups more fun. Donna Cohen remembered the sing-alongs that used to be part of the raft-ups. She suggested that we republish the SOS songbook and add sing-alongs to some of the cruises. She was able to find a copy of the original 1998 songbook on Caracol (thanks to Ben Kaufman for saving it) and she contacted Julie Stauss, who provided the original text file. We have condensed it a bit and reissued it in this form. Thanks Donna, Ben, and Julie. Enjoy. Ray Harris May 12, 2004

A PIRATE LOOKS AT FORTY (use capo at 2nd fret) G Mother, mother ocean I have heard you call C Wanted to sail upon your waters, C C/B G Since I was three feet tall. Am7 You’ve seen it all. Am7 G You’ve seen it all. Watched the men who rode you, Switch from sails to steam. And in your belly you hold the treasure Few have ever seen. Most of them dreams. Most of them dreams. G Yes I am a pirate, Two hundred years too late. C The cannons don’t thunder, There’s nothin’ to plunder, C/B G I’m an over forty victim of fate; Am7 Arriving too late. Am7 G Arriving too late. I’ve done a bit of smugglin’. I’ve run my share of grass. I made enough money to buy Miami. But I pissed it away so fast. Never meant to last. Never meant to last. I have been drunk now For over two weeks. I passed out and I rallied, And I sprung a few leaks. But I’ve got to stop wishin’, Got to go fishin’, I’m down to rock bottom again. Just a few friends. Just a few friends. (Instrumental - Ian) I go for younger women, Lived with several a while. And though I ran away They’ll come back one day. And still I can manage a smile.

It just takes a while. It just takes a while. Mother, mother ocean, After all these years I’ve found, My occupational hazard being My occupation’s just not around. I feel like I’ve drowned, Gonna head up town. I feel like I’ve drowned, Gonna head up town. ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM (C, Am, F, G) Dream, dream dream dream, Dream, dream dream dream When I want you in my arms, When I want you and all your charms Whenever I want you, All I have to do is Dre--ee--ee--ee--eam. When I feel blue in the night, And I need you to hold me tight Whenever I want you, All I have to do, is Dre--ee--ee--ee--eam. I can make you mine, Taste your lips of wine Any time, night or day. Only trouble is, gee whiz, I’m dreamin’ my life away. I need you so, that I could die, I love you so, and that is why Whenever I want you, All I have to do, is Dre--ee--ee--ee--eam. I can make you mine, Taste your lips of wine Any time, night or day Only trouble is, gee whiz, I’m dreamin’ my life away. I need you so, that I could die, I love you so, and that is why Whenever I want you, All I have to do, is Dre--ee--ee--ee--eam. Dream dream dream. (repeats out)

ALL MY LOVING Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you, Tomorrow I’ll miss you, Remember I’ll always be true. And then while I’m away, I’ll write home everyday And I’ll send all my loving to you. I’ll pretend that I’m kissing The lips I am missing And hope that my dreams will come true. And then while I’m away I’ll write home everyday And I’ll send all my loving to you. All my loving, I will send to you. All my loving, Darling I’ll be true. AMAZING GRACE (C, F, G) Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found, Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear, And Grace my fear relieved. How precious did that Grace appear, The hour I first believed. Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found, Was blind, but now I see. When we've been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun. We've no less days to sing God's praise, Then when we'd first begun. Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found, Was blind, but now I see. AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain; For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee,

And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea! O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine, Till all success by nobleness, And ev’ry gain divine. AMERICAN PIE (G, C, G, D, Em, A7) So bye bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee But the levee was dry. Them good ol’ boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye Singin’ this’ll be the day that I die. This’ll be the day that I die. Did you write the book of love And do you have faith in God above? If the Bible tells you so. Now do you believe in rock and roll, Can music save your mortal soul, And can you teach me how to dance real slow? Well, I know that you’re in love with him ‘Cause I saw you dancin’ in the gym, You both kicked off your shoes. Man I dig those rhythm and blues. I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck With a pink carnation and a pickup truck. But I knew I was out of luck The day the music died. I started singin’ bye, bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry. Them good ol’ boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye Singin’ this’ll be the day that I die. AN SOS LAD Words by Bill Small To the tune of “Golden Vanity” There once was a lad, and a brave young man was he, And he wanted to sail in single company, So he joined SOS, seemed to fit him to a “T”, Now he’s sitting by the lee rail.....he. When they left the slip, it was quarter after nine, On the sail from the creek, the weather it was fine, But then three hours out came the wind and choppy sea, Now he’s holding on the lee rail....he.

3

Then he said to the skipper: “I’m green around the gills, And I seem to have lost my motion sickness pills, And I fear that my breakfast is in some jeopardy.” Now he’s hanging o’r the lee rail.....he. So they sent him below to lie upon a bunk, Because it was clear he was feeling pretty punk, But he couldn’t stay there long without awful misery, Now he’s hanging o’r the lee rail.....he. When they got to the raft, he improved a little bit, And he thought to himself, ‘maybe I can cope with it’ Then they brought out the food and the drink for revelry, Now he’s hanging o’r the lee rail.....he. So let this be a lesson if you would sail with us, If you ever get queasy in a car or in a bus, Then take your Dramamine or your Bonine or you’ll be, You’ll be hanging o’r the lee rail.....ye. AND I LOVE HER (Dm, Am, Dm, Am, F, G, Am) I give her all my love, that’s all I do. And if you saw my love, you’d love her too. I love her. She gives me ev’ry thing and tenderly. The kiss my lover brings, she brings to me. And I love her. A love like ours, could never die As long as I have you near me. Bright are the stars that shine, Dark is the sky. I know this love of mine will never die. And I love her. BACK CREEK CRAB Jeffrey Holland, Crab Alley I'm gonna get my bucket and a chicken neck An old piece of string and a long pole net. I'm going down to Back Creek, I'm gonna get me some crabs. Goin' down to Back Creek to sit on a pier, Dangle my line while I sip on a beer. Goin' down to Back Creek, I'm gonna Back Creek Crab.

Give me some big fat males, Let the little ones go. If they scuttle from the bucket, They can bite you on the toe. Hard crabs, soft crabs, even the shedders, I'll take 'em home and eat 'em The sooner the better. I don't need a knife and I don't need a mallet Just a Back Creek Crab to satisfy my pallet. Goin' down to Back Creed, I'm gonna Back Creek Crab. Give me some Back Creek Crabs, Put 'em on a simmer. I can eat about eleven hundred dozen for dinner. Give me Back Creek Crab and a little Old Bay O shanty o free and daidy o day. I don't need a knife and I don't need a mallet Just a Back Creek Crab to satisfy my pallet. Goin' down to Back Creek, I'm gonna Back Creek Crab. BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC (D7, G, C) Mine eyes have seen the glory Of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage Where the grapes of wrath are stored. He hath loos'd the fateful lightning Of his terrible swift sword, His truth is marching on. Chorus: Glory, glory, Hallelujah! Glory, glory, Hallelujah! Glory, glory, Hallelujah! His truth is marching on. I have seen Him in the watch fires Of a hundred circling camps; They have builded Him an altar In the ev'ning dews and damps. I can read His righteous sentence By the dim and flaring lamps, His truth is marching on. (Chorus) I have read a fiery gospel Writ in burnish'd rows of steel: "As ye deal with My contemners, So with you My grace shall deal" Let the hero, born of woman, Crush the serpent with His heel, Since God is marching on. (Chorus)

BLOW THE MAN DOWN (D, D6, Em, A7) (Tom must lead!) Chorus: Oh, blow the man down, bullies, Blow the man down, To me way! hey! Blow the man down. Oh, blow the man down, bullies, Blow him away. Give me some time to blow the man down. As I was a-walkin' down Paradise Street, To me way! hey! Blow the man down. A pretty young damsel I chanced for to meet. Give me some time to blow the man down. (Chorus) She hailed me with her flipper, I took her in tow. To me way! hey! Blow the man down. Yardarm to yardarm away we did go. Give me some time to blow the man down (Chorus) As soon as the Packet was clear of the bar, To me way! hey! Blow the man down. The mate knocked me down with end of a spar. Give me some time to blow the man down. (Chorus) It's yardarm to yardarm away you will sprawl. Way! hey! Blow the man down. For kicking Jack Rogers commands to Black Ball. Give me some time to blow the man down. (Chorus) BLOW YE WINDS OF MORNING (G, C, D) ‘Tis advertised in Boston, New York and Buffalo 500 hearty sailors A-whaling for to go. Chorus: Singing, blow ye winds in the morning, Blow ye winds, high-ho! Haul away your running gear And blow, boys, blow. They take you to New Bedford That famous whaling port And hand you to some land-sharks To board and fit you out. (Chorus) They tell you of the clipper ships

A-going in and out. And say you’ll take 500 whales Before you’re six months out. (Chorus) It’s now we’re out to sea, my boys, The wind comes on to blow. One half the watch is sick on deck, The other half below. (Chorus) But as for the provisions, We don’t get half enough. A little piece of stinking beef And a blamed small bag of duff. (Chorus) Next comes the running rigging Which you’re all supposed to know. “Lay aloft, you son-of-a-gun, Or overboard you go!” (Chorus) The skipper’s on the after-deck A-squinting at the sails, When up aloft the lookout sights A mighty school of whales. (Chorus) BLOWING IN THE WIND (G, C, D7, Em - use capo at 1st fret) How many roads must a man walk down, Before he's called a man? How many seas must a white dove sail, Before he sleeps in the sand? How many times must cannon balls fly, Before they're forever banned? The answer, my friend, Is blowing in the wind; The answer is blowing in the wind. How many years can a mountain exist, Before it's washed to the sea? How many years can some people exist, Before they're allowed to be free? How many times can a man turn his head, And pretend that he just doesn't see? The answer, my friend, Is blowing in the wind; The answer is blowing in the wind. How many times must a man look up, Before he can see the sky? How many ears must one man have, Before he can hear people cry? How many deaths will it take 'til he knows, That too many people have died? The answer, my friend, Is blowing in the wind; The answer is blowing in the wind.

BLUE MOON (C, Am, F, G) Blue moon, you saw me standing alone Without a dream in my heart, Without a love of my own. Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for You heard me saying a prayer for, Someone I really could care for. (Dm, G, C) And there suddenly appeared before me That only one my arms will ever hold. I heard somebody whisper “Please adore me.” And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold! Blue Moon! Now I’m no longer alone. Without a dream in my heart, Without a love of my own. BOTH SIDES NOW (C, Em, F, G, - use capo) Bows and flows of angel hair, And ice cream castles in the air, And feather canyons ev’ry where, I’ve looked at clouds that way. But now they only block the sun, They rain and snow on ev’ryone. So many things I would have done, But clouds got in the way. I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now, From up and down and still somehow It’s cloud illusions I recall; I really didn’t know clouds at all. Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, The dizzy dancing way you feel, As ev’ry fairy tale comes real, I’ve looked at love that way. But now it’s just another show, You leave ‘em laughing when you go. And if you care, don’t let them know, Don’t give yourself away. I’ve looked at love from both sides now, From give and take and still somehow It’s love’s illusions I recall; I really don’t know love at all. Tears and fears and feeling proud, To say “I love you” right out loud, Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I’ve looked at life that way. But now old friends are acting strange, They shake their heads, they say I’ve changed. But something’s lost but something’s gained, In living ev’ry day.

I’ve looked at life from both sides now, From win and lose and still somehow It’s life’s illusions I recall; I really don’t know life at all. BROWN EYED GIRL (G, C, D, Em) Hey, where did we go? Days when the rains came. Down in the hollow Playin’ in a new game, Laughing and a running, hey, hey, Skipping and jumping. In this misty morning fog With our hearts a thumpin’ And you, my brown eyed girl. You, my brown eyed girl. Chorus: Do you remember when We used to sing: Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da. Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da, la te da. Brown-eyed girl, You, my brown-eyed girl. Whatever happened To Tuesday and oh so slow Going down the old mine, With a transistor radio. Standing in the sunlight laughing Hiding behind a rainbow’s wall Slipping and a-sliding All along the water fall With you, my brown eyed girl. You, my brown eyed girl. (Chorus) So hard to find my way, Now that I’m all on my own I saw you just the other day, My, how you have grown. Can’t remember back that far, Sometime I’m overcome thinking ‘bout Making love in the green grass Behind the stadium With you, my brown eyed girl You, my brown eyed girl. (Chorus)

CHANGES IN LATITUDES, CHANGES IN ATTITUDES D G I took off for a weekend last month just to A D Try and recall the whole year. G All of the faces and all of the places A Wonderin’ where they’d all disappeared. Bm I didn’t ponder the question too long; G A I was hungry and went out for a bite. G D Ran into a chum with a bottle of rum, A D And we wound up drinkin’ all night. G It’s those changes it latitudes, D Changes in attitudes; A D Nothin’ remains quite the same. G With all of our running D And all of our cunning A G If we couldn’t laugh we would all go Em D insane. Reading departure signs in a big airport Reminds me of the places I’ve been. Visions of good times That brought so much pleasure Makes me want to go back again. If it suddenly ended tomorrow, I could somehow adjust to the fall. Good times and riches and son of a bitches I’ve seen more than I can recall. These change in latitudes, Changes in attitudes; Nothin’ remains quite the same. Through all of the islands and All of the high lands, If we wouldn’t laugh we would all go insane. I think about Paris when I’m high on red wine; I wish I could jump on a plane. And so many nights I just dream of the ocean. God, I wish I was sailing again. Oh, yesterdays are over my shoulder, So I can’t look back for too long.

There’s just too much to see waiting in front of me, And I know that I just can’t go wrong. With these changes in latitudes, Changes in attitudes; Nothin’ remains quite the same. With all of our running and All of our cunning If I couldn’t laugh, I just would go insane If we couldn’t laugh we just would go insane. If we weren’t all crazy, we would all go insane. CHARLIE AND THE M.T.A. (G, D7, C) Let me tell you the story of a man named Charlie, On a tragic and fateful day. He put ten cents in his pocket, Kissed his wife and fam’ly, Went to ride on the M.T.A. Chorus: Did he ever return? No, he never returned, And his fate is still unlearned. He may ride forever, ‘Neath the streets of Boston: He's the man who never returned. Charlie handed in his dime at the Kendall Street Station, And he changed for Jamaica Plain. When he got there, the conductor hollered, "One more nickel!” Charlie couldn't get off that train. (Chorus) Charlie's wife comes down to the Skully Square Station Every day at a quarter past two. And through the open window, She hands Charlie a sandwich As the train goes barreling through. (Chorus) Now all night long, Charlie rides through the stations Saying, "What will become of me? How can I afford to see my sister in Chelsea, Or my cousin in Roxbury?" (Chorus) Now, you citizens of Boston, Don't you think it's a scandal, How the people have to pay and pay? Fight the fare increase, Vote for George O’Brien, Help get Charlie off the M.T.A. (Chorus)

CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE (Bm, A, Bm, G, Bm, A) D G A D Tried to amend my carnivorous habits. G A D Made it nearly seventy days, G A Losin’ weight without speed D Eatin’ sunflower seeds, E A Drinkin’ lots of carrot juice and soakin’ up rays. G A D But at night I’d have these wonderful dreams, G A Bm Some kind of sensuous treat. G D G D Not zucchini, fettucini or bulgar wheat, G D A But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of D meat. G A D Cheeseburger in paradise. G A D Heaven on earth with an onion slice. G A D Not too particular, not too precise. G D A D I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise. Heard about old time sailor men. They eat the same thing again and again, Warm beer and bread they said could raise the dead. Well, it reminds me of the menu at a Holiday Inn. But times have changed for sailors these days, When I’m in port I get what I need. Not just Havanas or bananas or daiquiris, But that American creation on which I feed! Cheeseburger in paradise. Medium rare with mustard be nice. Heaven on earth with an onion slice. I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise. (Instrumental) I like mine with lettuce and tomato, Heinz Fifty-Seven and french fried potatoes. Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer. Well, good God Almighty, Which way do I steer for my... G A D

Cheeseburger in paradise? G A D Makin’ the best of every virtue and vice. G A D Worth every damn bit of sacrifice G D A D To get a cheeseburger in paradise; G D A D To be a cheeseburger in paradise. G D A D I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise. COME MONDAY A D Headin’ up to San Francisco E A For the Labor Day weekend show. A D I got my hush puppies on E A I guess I never was meant for glitter rock and roll. And honey, I didn’t know That I’d be missing you so Chorus: D A Come Monday. It’ll be all right. E Come Monday, I’ll be holding you tight. A D I spent four lonely days in a brown L.A. E haze D E A And I just want you back by my side. Yes, it’s been quite a summer, Rent-a-cars and west-bound trains. And now, you’re off on vacation, Somethin’ you tried to explain. And darlin’, it’s I love you so. That’s the reason I just let you go. (Chorus) I hope you’re enjoying the scen’ry, I know that it’s pretty up there. We can go hiking on Tuesday, With you I’d walk anywhere. California has worn me quite thin I just can’t wait to see you again. (Chorus) Headin’ up to San Francisco For the Labor Day weekend show. I got my hush puppies on I guess I never was meant for glitter rock and roll. And honey, I didn’t know That I’d be missing you so (Chorus)

COTTON FIELDS (G, C, D7) When I was a little bitty baby My mamma would rock me in the cradle, In them old cotton fields back home. When I was a little bitty baby, My mamma rocked my in the cradle, In them old cotton fields back home. Chorus: Oh when them cotton bolls get rotten You can’t pick very much cotton In them old cotton fields back home. It was down in Louisiana, Just about a mile from Texarkana In them old cotton fields back home. It may sound a little bit funny But you didn’t make very much money In them old cotton fields back home. It may sound a little funny But you didn’t make very much money In them old cotton fields back home. (Chorus) I was over in Arkansas People ask me what you come here for In them old cotton fields back home. I was over in Arkansas People as me what you come here for In them old cotton fields back home. (Chorus) CRAZY (No chords) Crazy, crazy for feelin’ so lonely. I’m crazy, crazy for feelin’ so blue. I knew you’d love me as long as you wanted, And then someday you’d leave me for somebody new. Worry, why do I let myself worry; Wond’rin, what in the world did I do. Crazy, crazy for thinking that my love could hold you, I’m crazy for tryin’, crazy for crying. And I’m crazy for lovin’ you CRUEL WAR (G, Em, Am, D, C, Am, G, C) The cruel war is raging; Johnny has to fight. I want to be with him, from morning till night. I want to be with him, it grieves my heart so. “Won’t you let me go with you?” “No, my love no.”

Tomorrow is Sunday, Monday is the day That your captain will call you and you must obey. Your captain will call you, it grieves my heart so. “Won’t you let me go with you?” “No, my love no.” I’ll tie back my hair; men’s clothing I’ll put on. I’ll pass as your comrade as we march along. I’ll pass as your comrade, no one will ever know. “Won’t you let me go with you?” “No, my love no.” Oh Johnny, oh Johnny, I fear you are unkind, I love you far better than all of mankind, I love you far better than words can e’er express. “Won’t you let me go with you?” “Yes, my love yes.” CRYIN’ TIME (C, G7, F, C7) Chorus: Oh, it’s cryin’ time again, You’re gonna leave me. I can see that far away look in your eye. I can tell by the way you hold me darling That it won’t be long before it’s cryin’ time. Now they say that absence makes the heart grow fonder. And the tears are only rain to make love grow. Well, my love for you could never grow no stronger If I live to be a hundred years old. (Chorus) Now, you say that you’ve found someone you loved better; That’s the way it’s happened every time before. And as sure as the sun comes up tomorrow Cryin’ time will start when you walk out the door. (Chorus) DANNY BOY (G, F , C, G) Oh Danny boy, the pipes are calling, From glen to glen, and down the mountain side. The summer’s gone, and all the roses falling. ‘Tis you, ‘tis you, must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer’s in the meadow, Or when the valley’s hushed and white with snow. ‘Tis I’ll be there, in sunshine or in shadow. Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

9

And when ye come, and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be. You’ll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an Ave there for me. And I shall hear tho’ soft you tread above me And all my grave will warmer sweeter be. If you will bend and tell me that you love me Then I shall sleep in peace until you come to me. DON’T THINK TWICE, IT’S ALL RIGHT (C, G, Am, F - capo 1 fret) It ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, Babe It don’t matter anyhow. An it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, Babe, If you don’t know by now. When the rooster crows at the break of dawn Look out your window and I’ll be gone. You’re the reason I’m travelin’ on, Don’t think twice, it’s all right. It ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, Babe. That light I never knowed. An it ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, Babe, I’m on the dark side of the road. I ain’t saying’ you treated me unkind. You could have done better, but I don’t mind. You just sort of wasted my precious time, Don’t think twice, it’s all right. Lookin’ down that long lonesome road girl, Where I’m bound, I can’t tell. Good bye is too good a word gal, So, I’ll just say fare thee well. Still I wish there was somethin’ you would do, or say, To try and make me change my mind and stay, We never did too much talkin’ anyway, So don’t think twice, it’s all right. KISSES SWEETER THAN WINE (F, C, Dm, Am, D7) When I was a young man, and never been kissed, I got to thinking it over what I had missed; So I got me a girl and I kissed her and then, And then, oh, Lord, I kissed her again. Because she had kisses sweeter than wine. Oh, oh, kisses sweeter than wine. I asked her to marry and be my sweet wife, I said that we'd be so happy the rest of our life. I begged her and I pleaded like a natural man, And then, oh, Lord, she gave me her hand. Because she had kisses sweeter than wine. Oh, oh, kisses sweeter than wine. We worked mighty hard both me and my wife, A-workin’ hand in hand to have a good life. We had corn in the field and wheat in the bins, And then, oh, Lord, I was the father of twins. Because she had kisses sweeter than wine. Oh, oh, kisses sweeter than wine. Our children they numbered just about four, And they all had sweethearts knockin' at the door, They all got married and they didn't hesitate, I was, oh, Lord, the grandfather of eight. Because she had kisses sweeter than wine. Oh, oh, kisses sweeter than wine. Now that we’re old and ready to go, We get to thinkin' what happened a long time ago. We had a lot kids, a lot of trouble, and pain, But then, oh, Lord, we'd do it again. Because she had kisses sweeter than wine. Oh, oh, kisses sweeter than wine. (Chorus) LEAVING ON A JET PLANE (C, F, Em, G) All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go, I'm standing here outside your door, I hate to wake you up to say good-bye; But the dawn is breakin', it's early morn, The taxi's waitin', he's blowin 'his horn. Already I'm so lonesome, I could die. Chorus: So kiss me and smile for me, Tell me that you’ll wait for me, Hold me like you'll never let me go. 'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane Don't know when I'll be back again. Oh, Babe, I hate to go. There's so many times I've let you down; So many times I've played around, I tell you now they don't mean a thing. Ev'ry place I go I'll think of you, Ev'ry song I sing I’ll sing for you. When I get back I'll wear your wedding ring. (Chorus) Now the time has come to leave you, One more time let me kiss you. Then close your eyes and I'll be on my way. Dream about the days to come, When I won't have to leave alone, About the time I won't have to say: (Chorus) LEMON TREE (E, B, A / A, E) When I was just a lad of ten

My father said to me: “Come here and take a lesson from The lovely lemon tree.” “Don’t put your faith in love, my boy!” My father said to me “I fear you’ll find that love is like The lovely lemon tree.” Chorus: Lemon tree very pretty And the lemon flower is sweet. But the fruit of the poor lemon Is impossible to eat. Lemon tree very pretty And the lemon flower is sweet. But the fruit of the poor lemon Is impossible to eat. One day beneath the lemon tree My love and I did lie. A girl so sweet that when she smiled The stars rose in the sky. We passed that summer lost in love Beneath the lemon tree. The music of her laughter hid My father’s words from me. (Chorus) One day she left without a word. She took away the sun. And in the dark she’d left behind I knew what she had done. She’d left me for another. It’s a common tale but true. A sadder man, but wiser now, I sing these words to you. (Chorus) Lemon tree (Lemon tree), Lemon tree (Lemon tree), Lemon tree (Lemon tree), Lemon tree (Lemon tree). LET IT BE (G, D, Em, G) When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. And in my hour of darkness, She is standing right in front of me. Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. Chorus: Let it be, let it be, Let it be, let it be. Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people Living in the world agree, There will be an answer, let it be. For tho’ they may be parted, There is still a chance that they will see There will be an answer, let it be. (Chorus) There will be an answer, let it be. Instrumental (Chorus) Whisper words of wisdom, let it be. And when the night is cloudy, There is still a light that shines on me. Shines until tomorrow, let it be. I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be. (Chorus) There will be an answer, let it be. (Chorus) Whisper words of wisdom, let it be. LET IT BE ME I bless the day I found you I want to stay around you, And so I beg you, let it be me. Don’t take this heaven from one, If you must cling to someone, Now and forever, let it be me. If for each bit of gladness, Someone must taste of sadness, I’ll bear the sorrow, let it be me. No matter what the price is, I’ll make the sacrifices, Through each tomorrow, let it be me. To you I’m praying, Hear what I’m saying, Please let your heart beat For me, just me. And never leave me lonely, Tell me you’ll love me only, And that you’ll always

LYIN’ EYES (G, Em, C, Am, D7, G, C) (Adapted for sailors!) Sailor girls just seem to find out early. How to open doors with just a smile. A rich old man and she won’t have to worry She’ll dress up in lace and go in style. Late at night, a big ole boat gets lonely, I guess every form of refuge has its price. And it breaks my heart to think her love is only Given to a man with hands as cold as ice. So she tells him she must go out for the evening To comfort an old friend who’s feeling down But he knows where she’s going as she’s leaving She’s headed for the cheatin’ side of town. Chorus: You can’t hide your lyin’ eyes And your smile is a thin disguise I thought by now you’d realize There ain’t no way to hide your lyin’ eyes. On the other side of the raft a boy is waiting With fiery eyes and dreams no one could steal. She stumbles on through the night anticipating Cause he makes her feel the way she used to feel. She rushes to his arms, they fall together. She whispers it’s only for a while. She swears that soon she’ll be coming back forever. She goes away and leaves him with a smile. (Chorus) She gets up and pours herself a strong one And stares out at the stars up in the sky.

22

Another night that’s gonna be a long one. She draws a shade and hangs her head to cry.

23

She wonders how it ever got this crazy. She thinks about a boy she knew in school. Did she get tired, or did she just get lazy. She’s so far gone, she feels just like a fool. My, oh my, you sure know how to arrange things. You set it up so well, so carefully. Ain’t it funny you knew how life didn’t change things. You’re still the same ole’ girl you used to be. (Chorus) There ain’t no way to hide your lyin’ eyes...... Honey you can’t hid your lyin’ eyes.... MARGARITAVILLE D Nibblin’ on sponge cake, Watchin’ the sun bake; A All of those tourists covered in oil. Strummin’ my six string, On my front porch swing. D Smell of shrimp; they’re beginning to boil. G A D Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville, G A D Searching for my lost shaker of salt. G A D G Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, A D But I know, it’s nobody’s fault. Don’t know the reason, Stayed here all season With nothin’ to show but this brand new tattoo. But it’s a real beauty, A Mexican cutie, How it got here I haven’t a clue. Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville. Searching for my lost shaker of salt. Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame Now I think , hell, it could be my fault. I blew out my flip-flop, Stepped on a pop-top; Cut my heel had to cruise on back home. But there’s booze in the blender, And soon it will render That frozen concoction that helps me hang on. Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville, Searching for my lost shaker of salt.

Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, But I know, it’s my own damn fault. Yes, and some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, And I know it’s my own damn fault. MARIAH (C, Am, C, Am, Am, F, G, C) Way out here they have a name For wind and rain and fire. The rain is Tess, the fire Jo, They call the wind Mariah. Mariah blows the stars about And sets the clouds a-flyin’. Mariah makes the mountains sound Like folks was up there dyin’. Chorus: (F, C, F, G, Am) Mariah. Mariah. They call the wind Mariah. Before I knew Mariah’s name And heard her wail and whinin’ I had a gal and she had me And the sun was always shinin’. But then one day I left my gal I left her far behind me And Now I’m lost so gol darn lost Not even God can find me. (Chorus) Now I’m a lost and lonely man Without a star to guide me. Mariah blow my love to me; I need my gal beside me. (Chorus - 2x) MARVELOUS TOY (C, G7, C, D7) When I was just a wee little lad full of health and joy, My father homeward came one night and gave me a toy. A wonder to behold it was with many colors bright. And the moment I laid eyes on it It became my heart’s delight. It went “Zip” when it moves And “Bop” when it stopped And “Whirr” when it stood still. I never knew just what it was And I guess I never will.

24

The first time that I picked it up I had a big surprise, For right on its bottom were two big green eyes. I first pushed one and then the other And then I twisted its lid, And when I set it down again, Here is what it did: It first marched left and then marched right, And then marched under a chair. And when I looked where it had gone It wasn’t even there. I started to sob and my daddy laughed, For he knew that I would find When I turned around, My marvelous toy chugging from behind. Well the years have gone by too quickly it seems And I have my own little boy. And yesterday I gave to him, My marvelous little toy. His eyes nearly popped right out of his head And he gave a squeal of glee. Neither one of us knows what it is but he loves it just like me. It still goes “Zip” when it moves And “Bop” when it stopped And “Whirr” when it stood still. I never knew just what it was And I guess I never will. MICHAEL ROW THE BOAT ASHORE (D, G, Em, A7) Chorus: Michael, row the boat ashore, Allaluya. Michael, row the boat ashore, Allaluya. Michael's boat is the music boat, Allaluya. Michael's boat is the music boat, Allaluya. (Chorus) Sister, help to trim the sail, Allaluya. Sister, help to trim the sail, Allaluya, (Chorus) Jordan's River is deep and wide, Allaluya. Meet my mother on the other side, Allaluya. (Chorus) Jordan's River is chilly and cold, Allaluya. Kills the body, but not the soul, Allaluya. (Chorus) MIDNIGHT SPECIAL (E7, A, E, B7, A7) Chorus: Let the Midnight Special Shine its light on me.

Let the Midnight Special Shine its ever-lovin' light on me. Well, you wake up in the morning, Hear the ding-dong ring. Go marching to the table, See the same damn thing. Knife and fork on the table, Nothing in your pan, Say anything about it, You're in trouble with the man. (Chorus) If you ever go to Houston, Boy, You better walk right. And you'd better not gamble And you better not fight. For the sheriff will arrest you And he'll take you down. You can bet your bottom dollar, You're penitentiary bound. (Chorus) Well, yonder comes Miss Rosie; How in the world do you know? You can tell her by the apron And the dress that she wore. An umbrella on her shoulder, Piece of paper in her hand. She's going to the gov'ner To turn loose her man. (Chorus) Yonder comes Doctor Benson; How in the world do you know? Well, he gave me a tablet, Just the day before. Well, there isn't a doctor Traveling through this land That can cure the troubles Of a convict man. (Chorus) MOLLY THE BOLD (Janie Meneely - Crab Alley) (To the tune of Times They Are A Changin) (C, Em, F, G) Come sailors and seamen, my stouthearted braves Start minding your manners while out on the waves. For if you're offensive to females, I'm told You risk getting keelhauled by Molly the Bold. She'll snap off your spreaders, she'll scuttle your rigs. She's out wreaking havoc on chauvinist pigs. If girls named Lorena give ye men the hives, You'd better be good to your girl friends and wives.

25

Chorus: She's a knife in her teeth and a patch on her eye. She wears a red sash and boots up to her thigh. Her hair it runs wild, Her legs go unshaved, They call her the terror of Chesapeake Bay. Now, Molly was once just a sea captain's wife She'd never set foot on a boat in her life. Some say she was brainwashed, some say she was forced To sign herself up for a Womanship course. She studied the rigging, she studied the spars Studied the compass, she studied the stars. In one weekend flat, she learned every detail So she and her captain set out for a sail. they'd just left the dock when the captain cut loose With language that only a sailor might use. It wasn't so bad until Molly inferred Her husband was actually talking to her. "Not that one!" he'd holler. "Heave harder!" he'd cuff. By evening poor Molly had had quite enough A kick sent him flying right over the side Then she hauled up the jib and slipped out with the tide. (Chorus) While Molly was headed toward Thomas Point Light She spotted a race boat all sheeted in tight. The owner she knew was a nice guy at work But out on his boat he became such a jerk. And Molly just couldn't stand by and observe The comments that came from this consummate nerd She ran him aground on the Thomas Point Shoal And strung him up on his own spinnaker pole. Then Molly was sailing across Eastern Bay When an old Navy yawl came a'lumbering her way. And there in the stern with his mouth in full gear The captain was teaching his wife how to steer. That his wife was in tears testifies to the fact That that captain's tactics were lacking in tact. It was here they say Molly began her crusade For she sent him ashore with a Bobbit filet. (Chorus) With blood on her hands and a sneer on her lips, Molly's out looking around for more ships. And women are starting to say that she's swell This miscreant maritime libber from hell. So you guys who go crazy, who go quite insane. Who sail on your hormones instead of your brains. Take a warning from me and be good to your girls, Or the next boat she picks on is bound to be yours. (Chorus)

MOONLIGHT BAY We were sailing along, On Moonlight Bay We could hear the voices ringing, They seemed to say. You have stolen my heart, Now don’t go ‘way. As we sang love’s old sweet song, On Moonlight Bay. MOONSHADOW (G - Use capo on 1st fret) Chorus: Oh I’m bein’ followed by a moonshadow - Moonshadow, moonshadow. Leapin’ and a hoppin’ like a moonshadow - Moonshadow, moonshadow. And if I ever lose my hands, Lose my plow, lose my lands. Yes, if I ever lose my hands, Oh, oh, oh,............. I won’t have to work no more. (Chorus) And if I ever lose my eyes, All my colors all run dry. Yes if I ever lose my eyes Oh, oh, oh,............. I won’t have to cry no more. (Chorus) And if I ever lose my legs, I won’t moan and I won’t beg. And if I ever lose my legs, Oh, oh, oh,............. I won’t have to walk no more. (Chorus) And if I ever lose my mouth, All my teeth north and south. Yes if I ever lose my mouth Oh, oh, oh,............. I won’t ever have to talk. (Chorus) Did it take long to find me? I asked the faithful light. Yes, did it take long to find me And are you goin’ to stay the night? (Chorus) MORNING HAS BROKEN (D, Dm, G, F, C) Morning has broken like the first morning, Blackbird has spoken like the first bird. Praise for the singing, praise for the morning, Praise for them springing fresh from the world.

26

Sweet that rain’s new fall, sunlit from heaven, Like the first dewfall on the wet grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, Strung in completeness where his feet pass. Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning, Born of the one light Eden saw play. Praise with elation, praise ev’ry morning, God’s recreation of the new day. Morning has broken .... MORNING WATCH Janie Meneely, Crab Alley Mine is the morning watch, sun about to rise, Wind at my back and the stars still in my eyes. Steady breeze a'blowin' coming straight out of the west. We're reaching up from Norfolk, headed to Annapolis. Chorus: It's a fine boat we're sailing, it's a shame she's not my own. Owner up and left her and we're paid to bring her home. But soon I'm going to gather up whatever cash I've stowed, And buy the little sloop I've seen moored off the Chalk Point Road. Seven days from Nassau and it's been an easy ride. Had the Gulf Steam 'til it slipped us out the other side. Pulled in to Moorehead City just as day was coming on, Three days on the waterway is three damned days too long. (Chorus) Hazy yellow sunrise filling up the eastern sky, Sea gulls screaming overhead as we go sailing by. There's a different wind that hits you when you finally reach the Bay. We're finally on the Chesapeake and we'll make home today. (Chorus) By the time we get to Eastport all the bars will be shut down: Nothing left but sleep until tomorrow rolls around: I'll have to call the owner let him know we've finally showed: Then I guess I'll take a drive down to the end of Chalk Point Road. (Chorus)

MR. BOJANGLES (C, Em, Am, F, G, G7 - 3/4 time) I knew a man Bojangles and he danced for you, In worn out shoes. With silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants, The old soft shoe. He jumped so high, jumped so high, Then he lightly touched down. Chorus: Mister Bojangles, Mister Bojangles, Mister Bojangles, Mister Bojangles, Dance. I met him in a cell in New Orleans, I was down and out. He looked at me to be the eyes of age As he spoke right out. He talked of life, of life, He laughed slapped his leg a step. (Chorus) He said his name, Bojangles, Then he danced a lick across the cell. He grabbed his pants a better stance Oh he jumped up high, He clicked his heels. He let go a laugh, let go a laugh, Shook back his clothes all a round. (Chorus) He danced for those at minstrel shows At county fairs through out the South. He spoke with tears of fifteen years How his dog and he traveled about. His dog up and died, he up and died, After twenty years he still grieved. (Chorus) He said, “I dance now at ev’ry chance in honky tonks For drinks and tips. But most of the time I spend behind these county bars,” He said, “I drinks a bit.” He shook his head and as he shook his head, I hears someone ask please. (Chorus)

OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING Chorus: Oh what a beautiful morning, Oh what a beautiful day. I’ve got a beautiful feelin’ Everything’s goin’ my way. All the cattle are standin’ like statues, All the cattle are standin’ like statues, They don’t turn their heads as they see me ride by But a little brown maverick is winkin’ her eye. (Chorus) All the sounds of the earth are like music All the sounds of the earth are like music The breeze is so busy, it don’t miss a tree And o’ weepin’ willer is laughing at me! (Chorus) OLD LADY WHO SWALLOWED A FLY (G, A7, D7) I know an old lady who swallowed a fly, I don't know why she swallowed the fly, Perhaps she'll die. I know an old lady who swallowed a spider That wiggled and jiggled and tiggled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly, But I don't know why she swallowed the fly, Perhaps she'll die. I know an old lady who swallowed a bird; How absurd, to swallow a bird! She swallowed the bird to catch the spider That wiggled and jiggled and tiggled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly, But I don't know why she swallowed the fly, Perhaps she'll die. I know an old lady who swallowed a cat; Imagine that, she swallowed a cat! She swallowed the spider to catch the fly, But I don't know why she swallowed the fly, Perhaps she'll die. I know an old lady who swallowed a dog; What a hog, to swallow a dog! She swallowed the dog to catch the cat; She swallowed the cat to catch the bird; She swallowed the bird to catch the spider That wiggled and jiggled and tiggled inside her. But I don't know why she swallowed the fly, Perhaps she'll die. I know an old lady who swallowed a goat; Just opened her throat and swallowed a goat! She swallowed the goat to catch the dog; She swallowed the dog to catch the cat; She swallowed the cat to catch the bird; She swallowed the bird to catch the spider That wiggled and jiggled and tiggled inside her. Se swallowed the spider to catch the fly, But I don't know why she swallowed the fly, Perhaps she'll die. I know an old lady who swallowed a cow; I don't know how but she swallowed that cow! She swallowed the cow to catch the goat; She swallowed the goat to catch the dog; She swallowed the dog to catch the cat; She swallowed the cat to catch the bird; She swallowed the bird to catch the spider That wiggled and jiggled and tiggled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly, But I don't know why she swallowed the fly, Perhaps she'll die. I know an old lady who swallowed a rhinoceros; How preposterous, to swallow a rhinoceros! She swallowed the rhino to catch the cow; She swallowed the cow to catch the goat; She swallowed the goat to catch the dog; She swallowed the dog to catch the cat; She swallowed the cat to catch the bird; She swallowed the bird to catch the spider That wiggled and jiggled and tiggled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly, But I don't know why she swallowed the fly, Perhaps she'll die. I know an old lady who swallowed a horse, She's dead, of course! ONE TIN SOLDIER (C, G, Am, C, F, C, F, G) Listen children to a story That was written long ago ‘Bout a kingdom on a mountain And the valley folk below. On the mountain was a treasure Buried deep beneath a stone. And the valley people swore They’d have it for their very own.

28

Chorus: Go ahead and hate your neighbor, Go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of heaven, You can justify it in the end. There won’t be any trumpets blowin’ Come the judgment day On the bloody morning after One tin soldier rides away. So the people of the valley Sent a message up the hill Asking for the buried treasure Tons of gold for which they’d kill. Come an answer from the kingdom With our brothers we will share All the secrets of our mountain, All the riches buried there. (Chorus) Now the valley cried with anger Mount your horses, draw your sword And they killed the mountain people So they won their just reward. Now they stood beside the treasure On the mountain, dark and red Turned the stone and looked beneath it Peace on earth is all it said. (Chorus) PEACEFUL EASY FEELING (G, C, G, C, D - capo 1st fret) I like the way your sparklin’ earrings lay Against your skin so brown And I wanna sleep with you in the desert tonight With a billion stars all around. Chorus: ‘Cause I got a peaceful easy feelin’ And I know you won’t let me down ‘Cause I’m already standin’ on the ground. And I found out a long time ago What a woman can do to your soul. Ah, but she can’t take you anyway You don’t already know how to go. (Chorus) I get this feelin’ I may know you As a lover and a friend But this voice keeps whispering in my other ear Tells me I may never see you again. ‘Cause I got a peaceful easy feelin’ And I know you won’t let me down ‘Cause I’m already standin’,

I’m already standin’ Yes, I’m already standin’ on the ground. PEGGY SUE (G, C, D, C, D) If you knew, Peggy Sue, Then you’d know why I feel blue About Peggy, ‘bout my Peggy Sue. Oh, well, I love you, gal, yes, I love you Peggy Sue. Peggy Sue, Peggy Sue, Oh, how my heart yearns for you, Oh, Peggy, my Pa-heg-gy Sue; Oh, well, I love you, gal, yes, I love you Peggy Sue. I love you, Peggy Sue, with a love so rare and true, Oh Peggy, my Peggy Sue; Oh, well, I love you, gal, yes, I want you Peggy Sue. PUFF, THE MAGIC DRAGON G Bm C G Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea C G Em And frolicked in the autumn mist A D In a land called Honnalee. G Bm C G Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal, Puff. C G Em And brought him strings and sealing wax, C D7 G And other fancy stuff. Chorus: Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist In a land called Honnalee. Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist In a land called Honnalee. Together they would travel On a boat with billowed sail. Jackie kept a lookout, Perched on Puff’s gigantic tail. Noble kings and princes Would bow where ere they came, Pirate ships would lower their flags When Puff roared out his name. (Chorus)

29

A dragon lives forever, But not so little boys. Painted wings and giant's rings Make way for other toys. One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more. And Puff, that mighty dragon, He ceased his fearless roar. His head was bent in sorrow, Green scales fell like rain. Puff no longer went to play Along the Cherry Lane. Without his lifelong friend Puff could not be brave. So Puff, that mighty dragon, Sadly slipped into his cave. (Chorus) THE RIDDLE SONG (D, G, A7) I gave my love a cherry that had no stone. I gave my love a chicken that had no bone. I told my love a story that had no end. I gave my love a baby with no cryin'. How can there be a cherry that has no stone? How can there be a chicken that has no bone? How can there be a story that has no end? How can there be a baby with no cryin'? A cherry when it's bloomin', it has no stone, A chicken when it's pippin', it has no bone, The story that I love you, it has no end, A baby when it's sleepin', it's no cryin'. ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH (D, G, A) He was born in the summer of his 27th year Coming home to a place he’s never been before. He left yesterday behind him. You might say he was born again. You might say he found the key to every door. When he first came to the mountains His life was far away On the road and hanging by a song. Well the string is already broken And he doesn’t really care. It changes fast and it don’t last too long. Chorus: And the Colorado rocky mountain high I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky. Shadow from the starlight Is softer than a lullaby. Rocky mountain high (High Colorado) Rocky mountain high (High Colorado)

Well he climbed the feeble mountains. He saw silver clouds below. He saw everything as far as you can see. They say that he got crazy once And he tried to touch the sun. He lost a friend but kept the memory. (Chorus) Now he walks in quiet solitude Thru the forests and the streams Seeking grace in every step he takes. His sight has turned inside himself To try and understand The serenity of clear blue mountain high. (Chorus) Now his life is full of wonder But his heart still knows some fear Of the simple things he cannot comprehend. Why they try and tear the mountains down To bring in a couple more, More people, more scars upon the land. And the Colorado rocky mountain high I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky. You know he’d be a poorer man If he never saw an eagle fly. Rocky mountain high The Colorado rocky mountain high I’ve seen it raining fire in the sky. Friends around the campfire and everybody is high. Rocky mountain high (High Colorado) (Repeat last line 6X) ROCKY TOP Wish that I was on ol’ Rocky Top, Down in the Tennessee hills; Ain’t no smoggy smoke on Rocky Top; Ain’t no telephone bills. Once I had a guy on Rocky Top, Half bear, other half cat; Wild as a mink, but sweet as soda pop, I still dream about that: Chorus: Rocky Top, you’ll always be, Home sweet home to me. Good old Rocky Top, Rocky Top, Tennessee. Rocky Top, Tennessee. Once two strangers climbed ol’ Rocky Top, Lookin’ for a moonshine still. Strangers ain’t come down from Rocky Top; Reckon they never will. Corn don’t grow at all on Rocky Top, Dirt’s too rocky by far, That’s why all the folks on Rocky Top,

Get their corn from a jar. (Chorus) SAINT JAMES INFIRMARY I went to the Saint James Infirm’ry, I saw my baby there; She was lying on a table, So cold, so white, so fair. I went up to see the doctor; “She’s very low,” he said. I went back to see my baby, And, good God, she was lying there dead. I went down to old Joe’s barroom, On the corner by the square; The drinks were served as usual And the usual crowd was there. On my left stood Joe MacKennedy; His eyes were bloodshot red; He turned to the crowd around him, And these are the words he said. Let her go, let her go, God bless her, Wherever she may be; She may search this wide world over, But never find another man like me. Now when I die, please bury me In a hightop Stetson hat; Put a gold piece on my watch chain, So the gang will know I’m standing pat. Get six gamblers to carry my coffin, Six chorus girls to sing my song; Put a jazz band on my tail gate To raise hell as we roll along. And now that you’ve heard my story, I’ll take another shot of booze; If anyone should happen to ask you, I’ve got the St. James Infirmary blues. SANDMAN Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream, Make her complexion like peaches and cream. Give her two lips like roses in clover, Then tell me that my lonesome nights are over. Mr. Sandman, I’m so alone, Don’t have nobody, to call my own. Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream Make him the cutest that I’ve ever seen Give him the word, that I’m not a rover, Then tell me that my lonesome nights are over. Mr. Sandman, I’m so alone, Don’t have nobody to call my own. Please turn on your magic beam, Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream.

SCOTCH AND SODA Scotch and soda mud in your eye Baby, do I feel high, Oh me, oh my.... Dry Martini, jigger of gin Oh, what a spell you’ve got me in Oh, my do I feel high.... People won’t believe me They think that I’m just braggin’ But I could feel the way I feel And still be on the wagon... All I need is one of your smiles Sunshine of your eyes Oh my, do I feel high Higher than a kite can fly Give me lovin’, baby, I feel high. SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY Gonna take a sentimental journey Gonna set my heart at ease. Gonna make a sentimental journey To renew old memories. Got my bag, I got my reservation. Spent each dime I could afford. Like a child in wild anticipation Long to hear that “All aboard.” Seven, that’s the time we leave at seven. I’ll be wait’ up for Heaven Countin’ every mile of railroad track That takes me back. Never thought my heart could be so “yearney” Why did I decide to roam? Gotta take this sentimental journey, Sentimental journey home. SILHOUETTES (C, Am, F, G) Took a walk and passed your house Late last night. All the shades were pulled and drawn, Way down tight. From within a dim light cast Two silhouettes on the shade. Oh, what a lovely, couple they made. Put his arms around your waist, held you tight. Kisses I could almost taste, in the night.

31

Wondered why I’m not the girl Whose silhouette’s on the shade. I couldn’t hide, the tears in my eyes. Silhouette, silhouette, silhouette, silhouette. Lost control and rang your bell, I was sore. Let me in, or else I’ll beat down your door. When two strangers who had been Two silhouettes on the shade Said to my shock “You’re on the wrong block.” Rushed down to your house with wings on my feet Love you like I’ve never loved, you my sweet. Vowed that you and I would be two silhouettes on the shade..... SLOOP JOHN B. (A, E7, D) We sailed on the Sloop John B., My grandfather and me. 'Round Nassau town we did roam, Drinkin' all night, got into a fight. Well, I feel so broke-up, I wanna go home. Chorus: So, hoist up the John B.'s sails, See how the mains'l sets Send for the captain ashore, I wanna go home. Oh let me go home, please let me go home, I feel so broke-up, I wanna to go home. Well, the first mate he got drunk, Broke up the people's trunk, Constable had to come and take him away. Sheriff John Stone, please leave me alone, I feel so broke-up, I wanna go home. (Chorus) The cook he got the fits, Ate up all of my grits, Then he went and ate up all of my corn. Oh let me go home, please let me go home, This is the worst trip I’ve ever been on. (Chorus) SOLITARY MAN (Am, C, G) Melinda was mine till the time that I found her Holding Jim, loving him. Then Sue came along loved me strong; That’s what I thought. Me and Sue, but that died too. Chorus:

Don’t know that I will, but until I can find me The girl who’ll stay and won’t play games behind me, I’ll be what I am, a solitary man, solitary man. I‘ve had it to here bein’ where love’s a small world, Part-time thing, paper ring. I know it’s been done, hav’in one girl who’ll love me, Right or wrong, weak or strong. (Chorus) SON OF A SON OF A SAILOR (G, C, D7) As the son of a son of a sailor, I went out on the sea for adventure; Expanding the view of the captain and crew Like a man just released from indenture. As a dreamer of dreams and a traveling man, I have chalked up many a mile. Read dozens of books about heroes and crooks And I learned much from both of their styles. Chorus: Son of a son, son of a son, Son of a son of a sailor. Son of a gun; load the last ton. One step ahead of the jailer. Now away in the nearby future, Southeast of disorder, You can shake the hand of the mango man As he greets you at the border. And the lady she hails from Trinidad; Island of the spices. Salt for your meat, and cinnamon sweet, And the rum is for all your good vices. (Chorus) Haul the sheet in as we ride on the wind That our forefathers harnessed before us. Hear the bells ring as the tide rigging sings It’s the son of a gun of a chorus. Where it all ends I can’t fathom my friend. If I knew I might toss out my anchor. So I’ll cruise along always searchin’ for songs, Not a lawyer, a thief or a banker. (Chorus) I’m just a son of a son, son of a son, Son of a son of a sailor. The sea’s in my veins, My condition remains. I’m just glad I don’t live in a trailer.

SUMMERTIME (Am, E, Am, Dm) Summertime and the livin’ is easy, Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high. Oh your daddy’s rich, and yo’ ma is good lookin’. So hush, little baby, don’t you cry. One of these mornin’s You goin’ to rise up singin’ Then you’ll spread yo’ wings An’ you’ll take the sky. But till that mornin’ There’s nothin’ can harm you With Daddy an Mammy stand’n by. SWEET CAROLINE (G, C, D) Where it began, I can’t begin to knowing But then I know it’s growing strong. Was in the spring Then spring became the summer Who’d have believed you’d come along. Hands, touching hands Reaching out, touching me, touching you. Chorus: Sweet Caroline Good times never seemed so good. I’d be inclined To believe they never would. So good, so good. Look at the night and it don’t seem so lonely. We filled it up with only two. And when I hurt, Hurting runs off my shoulder. How can I hurt when I’m holding you. One, touching one Reaching out, touching me, touching you. (Chorus) TAKE ME HOME, COUNTRY ROADS (G, Em, D, C, F, D7) Almost Heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River. Life is old there, older than the trees, Younger than the mountains, Growin' like a breeze. Country roads, take me home

To the place I belong, West Virginia, mountain-momma, Take me home, country roads. All my mem'ries gather 'round her, Miner's lady, stranger to blue water. Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, Misty taste of moonshine, Teardrop in my eye. Country roads, take me home To the place I belong, West Virginia, mountain-momma, Take me home, country roads. I hear her voice in the mornin’ hours she calls me, Radio reminds me of my home far away. And drivin' down the road I get a feelin' That I should have been home yesterday, Yesterday-- Country roads, take me home To the place I belong, West Virginia, mountain-momma, Take me home, country roads. Take me home, country roads. Take me home, country roads. TEACH YOUR CHILDREN (E, A, E, Bm) You who are on the road Must have a code That you can live by. And so become yourself Because the past is just a good-bye. Chorus: Don’t you ever ask them why If they told you, you will cry So just look at them and sigh And know they love you. Teach your children well Their father’s hell Will slowly go by. And feed them on your dreams The one they picks The one you’ll know by. (Chorus) And you, of the tender years Can’t know the fears That your elders grew by. And so please help them with your youth They seek the truth Before they can die. (Chorus)

33

Teach your parents well Their children’s hell Will slowly go by And feed them on your dreams The one they picks The one you’ll know by. (Chorus) TEQUILA SUNRISE It’s another tequila sunrise, Stirrin’ slowly across the sky, Said good-bye. He was just a hired hand, Workin’ on the dreams he planned to try, The days go by. Every night when the sun goes down, Just another lonely boy in town, And she’s out runnin’ round. She wasn’t just another woman, But man I couldn’t keep from coming on, It’s been so long. Whoa and it’s a hollow feelin’, When it comes down to dealin’ friends, It never ends. Take another shot of courage, Wonder why the right words never come, You just get numb. It’s another tequila sunrise, And this old world still looks the same, Another frame. THIS BOY That boy took my love away, He'll regret it someday-i-ay, But this boy wants you back again. That boy isn't good for you, Tho' he may want you too, This boy wants you back again. Oh, and this boy would be happy, Just to love you, but oh my-yi-yi, That boy won't be happy, Till he's seen you cry-hi-hi. This boy wouldn't mind the pain, Would always feel the same, If this boy gets you back again. This boy. This boy. THIS IS MY COUNTRY This is my country! Land of my birth. This is my country! Grandest on earth! I pledge thee my allegiance,

America the bold. For this is my country, to have and to hold. This is my country! Land of my choice. This is my country! Hear my proud voice. I pledge thee my allegiance, America the bold. For this is my country, to have and to hold! THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND (G, C, D 7) Chorus: This land is your land, this land is my land, From California to the New York Island, From the redwood forest To the gulf stream waters, This land was made for you and me. As I went walking that ribbon of highway, I saw above me that endless skyway, I saw below me that golden valley, This land was made for you and me. (Chorus) I roamed and rambled And I followed my footsteps, To the sparkling sands of Her diamond deserts, While all around me a voice was sounding, This land was made for you and me. (Chorus) When the sun come shining, Then I was strolling, And the wheat fields waving, And the dust clouds rolling, A voice was chanting as the fog was lifting, This land was made for you and me. (Chorus) TIE ME KANGAROO DOWN SPORT Watch me wallaby’s feed, mate, Watch me wallaby’s feed. They’re a dangerous breed, mate, So watch me wallaby’s feed. All together now! All together now! (Chorus) Play you didgeridoo, Blue Play you didgeridoo. Keep playing ‘til I shoot thro’, Blue Play you didgeridoo. All together now! (Chorus) Tan me hide when I’m dead, Fred Tan me hide when I’m dead. So we tanned his hide when he died Clyde, and (Spoken: And that’s it hanging on the shed. All together now!) (Chorus) TIJUANA JAIL We went one day about a month ago (a-ha-ha) To have a little fun (a-ha) Mexico We ended up in a gambling spot (oh-yeah) a-ha-ha Where the liquor flowed And the dice were hot. Chorus: So here we are in the Tijuana jail. Ain’t got no friends to go our bail. So here we’ll stay ‘cause we can’t pay Just send our mail to the Tijuana jail. I was shootin’ dice, Rakin’ in the dough And then I heard the whistle blow. We started to run when a man in blue Said “Senor, come with me ‘Cause I want you.” (Chorus) Just five hundred dollars And they’ll set us free

I couldn’t raise a penny If ya threatened me. I know five “hundred” Don’t sound like much, But just try to find somebody to touch. (Chorus) So here we are in the Tijuana jail Ain’t got no friends to go our bail. So here we’ll stay ‘cause we can’t pay Just send our mail to the Tijuana jail. TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING Come gather round people wherever you roam And admit that the waters around you have grown And accept it that soon you’ll be drenched to the bone If your time to you is worth saving Then you’d better start swimming Or you’ll sink like a stone. For the times, they are a changing. Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pens And keep you eyes open, the chance won’t come again. And don’t speak too soon, the wheel’s still in spin And there’s no telling who that it’s naming. Oh the loser will be later to win For the times, they are a changing. Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call. Don’t stand in the doorway, don’t block up the hall. For he that gets hurt will be he that has stalled The battle outside raging will soon shake your windows And rattle your hall. For the times, they are a changing. Come mothers and fathers all over this land And don’t criticize what you can’t understand. Your sons and your daughter are beyond your command. Your old role is rapidly aging. Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend a hand For the times, they are a changing. The line, it is drawn, the curse, it is cast. The slow one will later be fast And the present now will soon be the past. The order is rapidly fading. The first one now will later be last For the times, they are a changing.

TO KNOW YOU IS TO LOVE YOU To know, know, know you Is to love, love, love you. Just to see you smile, Makes my life worthwhile. To know, know, know you Is to love, love, love you And I do. (and I do, and I do, and I do, and I do.) I’ll be good to you, And I’ll bring love to you. Everyone says there’ll come a day When I’ll walk along side of you. Yes, yes to know you Is to love, love, love you, and I do. Why can’t you see, How blind can you be? Some day you’ll see, That you were meant for me. To know, know, know you Is to love, love, love you. Just to see you smile, Makes my life worthwhile. To know, know, know you Is to love, love, love you And I do. TODAY (C, Em, F, G) Chorus: Today, while the blossoms still cling to the vine, I’ll taste your strawberries, I’ll drink your sweet wine. A million tomorrows shall all pass away. E’re I forget all the joys that are mine today. I’ll be a dandy and I’ll be a rover, You’ll know who I am By the song that I sing. I’ll feast at your table, I’ll sleep in your clover, Who cares what the morrow shall bring. (Chorus) I can’t be contented with yesterdays glories, I can’t live on promises, winter to spring. Today is my moment and now is my story, I’ll laugh and I’ll dance and I’ll sing. (Chorus)

TOM DOOLEY (D, A7) Chorus: Hang down your head, Tom Dooley; Hang down your head and cry; Hang down your head, Tom Dooley, Poor boy, you're bound to die. (Chorus) This time tomorrow, Reckon where I'll be, Hadn't been for Grayson, I'd been in Tennessee. (Chorus) This time tomorrow, Reckon where I'll be, Down in some lonesome valley, Hanging from a white oak tree. (Chorus - 2x) TRY TO REMEMBER (C, D, G, A7) Try to remember the kind of September When life was slow and oh so mellow. Try to remember the kind of September When grass was green and grain was yellow. Try to remember the kind of September When you were a tender and callow fellow. Try to remember and if you remember Then follow. Try to remember when life was so tender That no one wept except the willow. Try to remember when life was so tender That dreams were kept beside your pillow. Try to remember when life was so tender That love was an ember about to billow. Try to remember and if you remember, Then follow. Deep in December, it’s nice to remember Altho’ you know the snow will follow. Deep in December, it’s nice to remember Without a hurt the heart is hollow. Deep in December, it’s nice to remember The fire of September that made us mellow. Deep in December our hearts should remember And follow.

I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me. Lonely rivers flow, to the sea, to the sea. To the open arms of the sea. Lovely rivers sigh, “Wait for me, wait for me!” I’ll be coming home, wait for me. Oh, my love, my darling, I’ve hungered for your touch A long, lonely time. Time goes by so slowly And time can do so much, Are you still mine? I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me. WALTZING MATILDA (D, Bm, G, A, A7) Once a jolly swagman sat beside the billabong, Under the shade of a coulibah tree, And he sang as he sat and waited by the billabong, "You'll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me." Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me. And he sang as he sat and waited by the billabong, "You'll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me." Down came a jumbuck to drink beside the billabong, Up jumped the swagman and seized him with glee. And he sang as he talked to that jumbuck in his tuckerbag, "You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me." Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me. And he sang as he talked to that jumbuck in his tuckerbag, "You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me." Down came the stockman, riding on his thoroughbred, Down came the troopers, one, two, three. "Where's the jolly jumbuck, you got in your tuckerbag? You'll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me." Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me. “Where's the jolly jumbuck, you've got in your tuckerbag? You'll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me." Up jumped the swagman and plunged into the billabong, "You'll never catch me alive," cried he. And his ghost may be heard

As you ride beside the billabong, "You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me." Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me. And his ghost may be heard As you ride beside the billabong, "You’ll come a-waltzing, Matilda, with me." WE ARE SINGLES ON SAILBOATS Words by Bill Small To the Tune of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" Chorus: We are Singles on Sailboats, And we sail the Chesapeake, From the waters up at Elk Neck To the shores of Kiptopeke. When you see us on the water With our burgees raised on high, Give a wave and give a smile, As we go sailing by. (Chorus) Here's a toast to all our members As we sail upon the Bay Here's to skippers, here's to first mates, Here's to crew on board today. (Chorus) Will the raft up still be form'ng As our day comes to an end? Will our good friends all be waiting As we sail around the bend? (Chorus) WEDDING SONG (E, B, A, E, C#m, C#) He is now to be among you At the calling of your hearts, Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part. The union of your spirits here Has caused him to remain, For whenever two or more of you Are gathered in His name There is love, there is love. Well, a man shall leave his mother And a woman leave her home, They travel on to where the two shall be as one. As it was in the beginning, Is now and ‘til the end, Woman draws her life from man And gives it back again

39

And there is love, there is love. Well, then what’s to be the reason For becoming man and wife? Is it love that brings you here, Or love that brings you life? For if loving is the answer, Then who’s the giving for? Do you believe in something that you’ve never seen before? Oh, there’s love. Oh, the marriage of your spirits here Has caused Him to remain, For whenever two or more of you Are gathered in His name There is love, oh, there’s love. WHEN WILL I BE LOVED? (A, D, E) I’ve been cheated, Been mistreated; When will I be loved? I’ve been pushed down, I’ve been pushed ‘round; When will I be loved? When I find my new man That I want for mine, He always breaks my heart in two; It happens every time. I’ve been made blue, I’ve been lied to; When will I be loved? I’ve been cheated, Been mistreated; When will I be loved? When will I be loved? Tell me, when will I be loved? WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOW ERS GONE? (C, G7, Am, D7, G, F) Where have all the flowers gone? Gone to flowers, everyone. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn? Where have all the flowers gone? Long time passing. Where have all the flowers gone? Long time ago. Where have all the flowers gone? Young girls picked them, everyone. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn? Who put the ram in the ram a lam a ding dong? Who put the bop in the bop sh bop sh bop? Who put the dit in the dit, dit, dit, dit da? Who was the man? I’d like to shake his hand.

40

He made my baby fall in love with me. When my baby heard Bomp, ba ba bomp ba bom, ba bomp bomp, Every word went right into her heart. And when she heard them singing, Ram a lam a lam a lam a ding dong, She said we’d never have to part. (Chorus) Time that we’re alone, Bomp, ba ba bomp, ba bom ba bomp bomp, Sets my baby’s heart all aglow. And ev’ry time we dance to Ram a lam a lam a lam a ding dong, She always says she love me so. (Chorus) WHY DON’T WE GET DRUNK I really do appreciate the fact you’re sittin’ here. Your voice sounds so wonderful But your face don’t look too clear. So bar maid bring a pitcher, Another round of brew. Honey, why don’t we get drunk and screw? Chorus: Why don’t we get drunk and screw? I just bought a water bed, It’s filled up for me and you. They say you are a snuff queen. Honey, I don’t think that’s true. So why don’t we get drunk and screw? (Spoken: “Pick it coral reefers. Here we go.” Instrumental (Chorus) WORRIED MAN (G, C, D7) Chorus: It takes a worried man to sing a worried song. It takes a worried man to sing a worried song. It takes a worried man to sing a worried song, I’m worried now, but I won’t be worried long. Got myself a Cadillac, thirty dollars down. Got myself a brand new house, five miles out of town. Got myself a gal named Sue, treats me really fine. Yes she’s my baby, and I love her all the time. (Chorus) I’ve been away on a business trip, travelin’ all around. I’ve got a gal and her name is Sue, Prettiest gal in town. Well, she sets my mind to worryin’

Every time I’m gone. I’ll be home tonight, so I won’t be worried long. (Chorus) Well, Bobby’s in the living room Holding hands with Sue. Nickie’s at that big front door ‘bout to come on thru. I’m here in the closet, Oh, Lord what should I do? We’re worried now, But we won’t be worried long. (Chorus) YELLOW SUBMARINE (C, D, C, G) In the town, where I was born Lived a man, who sailed the sea. And he told us of his life, In the land of submarines. So we sailed up to the sun, Till we found the sea of green. And we lived beneath the waves, In our yellow submarine. We all live in a yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine. We all live in a yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine. And our friends are all on board, Many more of them live next door. And the band begins to play: We all live in a yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine. We all live in a yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine. As we live a life of ease, Everyone of us has all we need. Sky of blue and sea of green In our yellow submarine We all live in a yellow submarine, Yellow submarine, yellow submarine.

YESTERDAY (C, E, Am, F, C, F, G, F, F, C, C) Yesterday, All my troubles seemed so far away, Now it looks as though they’re here stay, Oh, I believe in yesterday. Chorus: Why she had to go I don’t know, She wouldn’t say. I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday. Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play. Now I need a place to hide away, Oh, I believe in yesterday. Suddenly, I’m not half the man I used to be, There’s a shadow hanging over me, Oh yesterday came suddenly. (Chorus) Mm mm mm mm mm. YOU’RE NO GOOD Feelin’ better now that we’re thru; Feelin’ better ‘cause I’m over you. I learned my lesson, it left a scar; Now I see how you really are. Chorus: You’re no good, you’re no good, you’re no good, Baby, you’re no good. I’m gonna say it again, You’re no good, you’re no good, you’re no good, Baby, you’re no good. I broke a heart that’s gentle and true; Well, I broke a heart over someone like you. I’ll beg his forgiveness on bended knees; I wouldn’t blame him, if he said to me: (Chorus) I’m tellin’ you, don’t blame me And I’m goin’ my way; Forget about you, baby, ‘cause I’m leavin’ to stay. (Chorus) You’re no good, you’re no good, you’re no good, Baby, you’re no good. YOUR CHEATIN’ HEART (C, G, D7) Your cheatin’ heart Will make you weep, You’ll cry and cry And try to sleep.

But sleep won’t come The whole night through Your cheating heart Will tell on you. Chorus: When tears come down Like fallin’ rain You’ll toss around And call my name. You’ll walk the floor The way I do Your cheatin’ heart Will tell on you. Your cheatin’ heart Will pine someday And crave the love You threw away. The time will come When you’ll be blue Your cheatin’ heart Will tell on you. (Chorus) ZIP A DEE DO DAH (G, C, D7, G) Zip a dee do dah, zip a dee ay, My oh my what a wonderful day Plenty of sunshine, headin’ my way. Zip a dee do dah, zip a dee ay.
