Sustainable  Opportunity   Solutions   Limited   (SOS)   is   a   leading  advisory   firm   that  helps  businesses  develop,   implement   and  monitor   sustainable   business   practices   across   the   private   and   public   sectors.   Our   services   include   the   development   of  Environmental   and   Carbon   Management   Systems,   decision   support   tools   for   business   travel   and   for   renewable   energy  investments,  and  the  deliver  of  inspiring  environmental  training.  Our  main  activities  relate  to  business  travel  to  deliver  our  services  and  office  and  development  activities.

We   believe   that   the   climate   change   impact   from   rising   carbon   emissions   requires   leadership   and   thus   a   specific  commitment.  In  2009  we  signed  up  to  Business  in  the  Community’s  MAYDAY  Commitment  to  record,  as  far  as  possible,  our  principal  carbon  emissions  and  report  annually  our  progress.  This  is  SOS’  inaugural  statement,  which  outlines  our  approach  and  baseline  for  the  carbon  impacts  of  our  activities,  namely  travel,  and  our  objectives  for  2011.

Our Carbon Boundaries

SOS   operates   from   a   two   locations  with   staff  members   sometimes  working   from   home.  We   aim   to   report   the   principal  carbon  emissions  that  reflect  our  activities.  For  2010  our  carbon  statement  reflects  business  travel  by  SOS  staff  and  indirect  energy  consumption  from  our  main  locations  (Scope  1  &  2  emissions  under  the  Greenhouse  Gas  Reporting  Protocol  and  the  Carbon  Trust  Standard).  However,  our  carbon  impact  excludes  energy  used  for  our  share  of  heating  within  a  shared  office  facility.  We  have  estimated  electricity  consumption  based  on  the  equipment  we  use,  and  where  possible  at  our  offices.     Our Carbon Management Principles

• Continue  to  improve  the  recording  and  reporting  of  our  carbon  impacts  • Focus  on  behavioural  change  to  reduce  emissions    • Set  carbon  reduction  objectives  and  review  progress  • Engage  our  customers,  suppliers  with  the  purpose  of  a  low  carbon  economy  and  business  practices  • Transparent  reporting  of  our  performance.     Our Carbon Performance

This  is  our  first  carbon  statement  for  the  year  to  31  December  2010.  It  is  based  on  maintaining  individual  mileage  records  of  our   staff   and   reflects   the   benefits   of   lift-‐sharing   and   the   use   of   online   communications   tools   (e.g   skype).   We   calculate  carbon  emissions  using  the  Department  for  Environment,  Food,  and  Rural  Affairs  (DEFRA)  Carbon  Conversion  Factors  2010  for  the  mode  of  transport  taken  and  energy  consumed.  Our  2010  carbon  footprint  of  2,416  KG  CO2e  (2009:  2,065  KG  CO2e)  reflects  an  increase  17.0%  on  2009,  due  to  increase  in  staff  numbers  and  development  activity;  2010:  1,611  KG  CO2e  /FTE  (2009:   2,065  KG  CO2e).     Increase   in   electricity   consumption   reflects   669  KGCO2e   from  non-‐renewable   sources   at   our   new  development  office  with  the  avoidance  of  353  KG  CO2e  from  purchasing  renewable  electricity  used  at  our  registered  office.

Overall  Business  travel  accounts  for  63%  (2009:90%)  of  our  carbon  footprint  reflecting  12,600miles  (2009:15,000miles)  and  represents  a   saving  of  337  KG  CO2e   (18%)   reduction   in   travel   related  emissions.  We  have  achieved  our  main  objective  of  maintaining   our   average   carbon   intensity   at   75   CO2e   g/km  with   81%   (2009:80%)   from   public   transport   (train,   bus,   cycle,  walk).

Although  we  aim  to  minimise  significant  omissions  or  inaccuracies  in  our  statement,  it  has  not  been  independently  verified  and  we  will  continue  to  improve  the  reliability  of  our  carbon  statement.

Our Carbon Management Objectives for 2011

• Continue  to  improve  the  measurement  of  our  carbon  footprint    • Maintain  the  Carbon  Intensity  Score  for  Business  Travel  below  <100g/km  • Invest  in  new  computer  equipment  to  reduce  energy  consumption  • Support  our  clients  with  their  carbon  reporting,  including  certification  to  the  Carbon  Trust  Standard    and  MAYDAY
