Dear Soroptimists and Guests,

On May 17-19, 2019 I will welcome all of you to the Sierra Pacific Region’s 43rd Annual Conference. We are excited to return to the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Modesto…we love those chocolate chip cookies!

We are using “Club Express” software for our registration process. If you have ever shopped on-line (shoes on Amazon?), using this software is just as easy! Governor Lori Reed of the Golden West Region has been tutoring me and our Conference Team on setting it up and it is working beautifully. Just go to www.sispr.clubexpress.com OR go to our home page on the Sierra Pacific Region website at www.sierrapacificregion.org and click on the REGISTRATION LINK.

Bonus! You can pay for the Conference meals and reserve a sales tables electronically with PayPal! If your club has a PayPal account, then you can pay directly from your club’s checking account to the region PayPal account OR you can pay from a credit card. You can still pay by check…once you have registered then Club Express will create a handy invoice for you to print out and send with your check to Treasurer Charlie….all the details of your club registration will be in the system already…food preferences, names of attendees, names of delegates, etc.

We will not have a Friday afternoon Leadership segment this year; instead we will hold a “Development Retreat” in Reno, Nevada at the fabulous Atlantis Casino Resort Spa July 27-28, 2019 (Sat and Sunday). We are co-hosting and producing this leadership training with the Sierra Nevada Region and will feature exciting workshops on leadership and other things like Turning Your Fear of Speaking Into POWER and The Secret Language of Soroptimist! Plus Bay Area movie Critic Jan Wahl is a key-note speaker. You will get more information at the Conference on this.

You will not want to miss the Graffiti Walk on Friday afternoon with its creator Chris Murphy in downtown Modesto (Home of George Lucas and the original American Graffiti). Back by popular demand for Friday night’s entertainment is the LIP SYNC CONTEST! Dig out your favorite “powerful women – we can do it” song, dress yourselves up and bring it to Conference!

Our Live Your Dream luncheon on Saturday will feature 2014 Sierra Pacific Region Live Your Dream recipient, Shanell Williams. Not only did Shanell graduate from college with the help of our grants, she went on to run for election for the City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees and won! She will be a great inspiration to our 2018-2019 recipients.

At our Saturday night dinner we will be entertained by the Thomas Downey High School Nightingales and our keynote speaker is Carlandra, The Magical Teacher! You will ALL wish you had a teacher like Carlandra!

Our official visitor this year is our Soroptimist International of the Americas (SIA) Secretary/Treasurer Pat McCay. Pat is passionate about ending human slavery and trafficking in the U.S. as well as the world and will present up-to-date information on the issue.

I look forward to seeing all of you in our relaxed “conference mode”, celebrating our clubs’ and members’ successes in improving the lives of women and girls.

Sincerely, Governor Gail

RESPONSIBILITIES OF CLUB DELEGATES

Designated club delegates should have a working knowledge of Soroptimist laws, Region Bylaws, the objectives and ideals of the organization, and experience as a member of a club board or committee. An understanding of parliamentary procedure and a spirit of goodwill and understanding will help the delegate, the club, and the Conference body. The Club President, who serves as a delegate and the leader of the club delegation, should:

• Allocate time at a business meeting to discuss proposed indices/resolutions, budgets and solicit club opinion or direction.

• Arrange with the other delegates for assigning sections of the report on Conference to be given to non-attending club members.

• As soon as possible after Conference, schedule time at a club meeting for delegates to present their reports.

Prior to Conference Delegates should:

• Study the Invitation (Call) that indicates the tentative agenda listing business to be transacted, forms, workshops, and social events.

• Verify with Club President or Treasurer that Registration Forms and payment have been submitted for all attending members in a timely manner.

• Check in at the Delegates Registration to receive Conference materials and delegate credentials.

• Determine which delegate will attend which workshop, etc. • Bring Invitation (Call) to Conference, Region Bylaws & Soroptimist pin.

During Conference Delegates should:

• Register promptly. Wear your name badge so others can identify you and your club. • SIT IN DESIGNATED DELEGATE AREA. • Be on time. Time schedules at Conference are important. Don’t leave early. Guests

invited to address the Conference body deserve consideration. • Attend all sessions and take notes for precise reporting back to club. • Vote with the club viewpoint in mind.

After Conference Delegates should:

• Prepare a report to their club that may include action taken during the business meeting and the reason for each action.

• Discussion of awards - who won them and why? • How can your club participate next year? • Present their personal evaluation of the Conference and encourage increased club

attendance at future meetings and Conferences.

NEW:

Each club is invited to make a table centerpiece for our Friday night dinner. Here are the rules for the centerpieces which must reflect the Making Dreams Come True theme.

1. The height cannot exceed 18 inches

2. Be CREATIVE

3. The vase to be used will be found at Dollar Tree. It is the Round Glass Floral Bowl SKU: 850473. Cost is $1.00

During the evening we will encourage our members and guests to vote on their favorite centerpiece by placing dollars in an envelope on that table. The one with the most money at the end of the night will win the contest.

At the end of the evening they will be moved to the Sales Room for display along with their placement in the contest. They will also be available for purchase. All proceeds from this contest will go to Sierra Pacific Region for the Beyond the Cash Award for our Region Recipients. Please notify our Conference Coordinator that you will be participating Nancy Prather-Cardwell at [email protected]

Modesto Graffiti Walk Home of George Lucas and the original American Graffiti

Go for a walk with one of Modesto’s most knowledgeable and enthusiastic people, Chris Murphy. We will go for an easy walk around Modesto and the cruise route at

5:00 on Friday May 17, 2019.

“Where were you in ’62?”

….asked a movie poster in 1973. It was a simple question that has tugged on our culture ever since. Everything from Grease, Happy Days, and a fond feeling of retro-America points back to the George Lucas movie about the end of high school age in Modesto. This cinematic look at Modesto was fun, novelty, romance, and reality all rolled into one with some of the best rock and roll music ever written. The spirt of American Graffiti still endures today.

10th and 11th Streets of Downtown Modesto were the location and origin of the stories and people of the true cruising route that inspired Lucas’ film. We hope you’ll have a rockin’ good time on this nostalgic walk through history. Get your kicks on the Historic Modesto Graffiti Cruise Route!
