APRIL IS THE MONTH when we really appre-
ciate all of those little things we take for
granted the rest of the year. The weather is
great, crawfish are here, our wardrobes perk
up and the children play until exhaustion
with longer days that linger into evening. We
find ourselves with more energy to finally
make those home improvements. It seems
like our last chance to relish the mild out-
doors before the sweltering heat of summer
steals it away. April is the month to count
those little blessings.
In truth, we should count our blessings
every day of every month. While April throws
us into that springtime frenzy, it is even
more important to make the time to slow
down and enjoy those moments with family
and friends, that ultimately may add up to
our fondest memories over time.
This issue is brimming with ideas to
help you get out and enjoy your April. Our
Northshore’s Best results for 2011 are in and
our Pull Out Guide is your resource to enjoy
this place we call home. Our Enterprising
Woman offers every home owner a success-
ful formula for home improvement and our
Fashion Editor has put together wardrobe
ideas that will fling you into spring.
During this month, take the time to enjoy
this wonderful weather with family and
friends. Find some time to enjoy all of the
best of the best here on the Northshore.
Finally, spend time enjoying whatever you
do with people you cherish, and remember
to always count those blessings, because you
really don’t know what you have until it has
passed you by.

health І ORTHODONTICS
Dr. Edward Brown, III is certifi ed by the American Board of Orthodontics. He can be reached at Brown Family Orthodontics in Mandeville, 985-626-8297 or Covington, 985-893-1044 or visit www.brownfamilyortho.com.
TO RETAIN MEANS to keep in place; there-
fore, an orthodontic retainer is used to keep
teeth in their new positions after braces
come off. Most orthodontists use one of
three types of retainers.
A clear plastic retainer, sometimes called
an invisible or Essix® retainer, resembles the
Invisalign® appliance. A bonded retainer, is
a small wire placed behind the lower teeth
with orthodontic bonding material similar
to the procedure used to place the braces.
A wire and plastic retainer, also known as a
Hawley, is designed with a wire across the
front of the teeth and acrylic plastic that
covers the soft tissue. This type of retainer
is adjustable so that tooth movement is
possible. It can be worn full time, instead of
braces, to correct mild to moderate upper
and lower crowding.
It takes many months for the ligaments
and bone to adapt to the new position of
the teeth and keep them in place. A retainer
keeps them in their proper new positions
while this is occurring. It’s important to
wear retainers exactly as your orthodontist
recommends, otherwise, tooth movement
may occur.
Orthodontists routinely recommend that
retainers be worn full time for the first few
months and sometimes up to a year after the
braces are removed. Once the teeth stabilize,
a good rule of thumb is to try your retainer
on every night. If it feels tight, more wear
may be necessary.
Years after orthodontic correction, teeth
may begin to move and shift, therefore
regular retainer wear is required indefinitely
for at least a couple of nights each week
to prevent teeth from shifting. Regular use
will ensure that your smile stays healthy
and beautiful!

Excellence Award
Nationally recognized with the Dale Hawley Award for her leadership skills and dedication to service, St. Scholastica Academy (SSA) senior, Mary Margaret Scardulla, or Mimi, as she is known, personifies these qualities on a daily basis. Her stellar academic record, coupled with her involvement with everything from theater productions, school masses, extracurricular school clubs, and community service organizations, has enabled Mimi to pursue her first love—the theater. She has earned the Alumnae Association Scholarship for school involvement, the Most Outstanding Citizen Award at Girl’s State, and she has had leading roles in several school productions including her most current in SSA’s upcoming production of Hairspray.
What sets Mimi apart from other teens her age, is her long-term life goals. “I plan to major in Musical Theater in college, but my ultimate life goal is to return to the Northshore and open a performing arts academy,” she says. “With so much raw talent in this area, I think it is something we need here.” For now, she will continue on with her favorite activities, like watching Food Network with her Mom, and working at her job as an assistant dance instructor where she watches young girls, “fall in love with dance” just as she did.
Congratulations to Mary Margaret Scardulla, Mimi, our April 2012 Charter Business HERO award winner.Mary Margaret Scardulla with Terry Masters of

HORMONE REPLACEMENT is quite often a
lifestyle choice. People who are suffering
from negative symptoms of hormone imbal-
ance often choose bio-identical hormone
replacement in order to relieve symptoms
and improve their quality of life. Some
people think the symptoms are a normal
part of aging and they should simply tol-
erate them. Others question the safety of
hormone replacement and worry about side
effects—especially cancer. This puts people
between the proverbial rock and a hard
place, quite unnecessarily.
If we mimic nature by using bio-identical
hormones that are the same chemical struc-
ture as those made by the human body
and follow the body’s normal metabolic
pathways, to restore a hormonal deficit, as
opposed to a synthetic hormone, we should
greatly reduce the risk of side effects. We are
replacing the deficiency with the exact same
hormones that were once in abundance
when we were younger. These hormones
were good for us then, so the possibility of
problems arising from replacement with bio-
identical hormones now should be minimal.
Stress exacerbates all hormone deficien-
cy symptoms. Excess stress is caused by
a myriad of every day factors, including
marriage troubles, pressure at work, even
excessive dieting. Caregivers are under tre-
mendous stress, including those who care
for the sick and elderly, young children and
school teachers. Quite often we find that
people under stress need only their DHEA
and Cortisol levels balanced.
Every individual is different and a com-
pounding pharmacist specializing in bio-
identical hormone replacement can work
with your physician to customize a treat-
ment regimen for you.
How Do I Know if I Need Hormones?

ONE OF THE GOALS of any financial security
plan is to protect against life’s uncertainties,
and life insurance is often the first item on
the list for taking care of family members.
Starting a policy early protects your insur-
ability for the future and helps make the
insurance more affordable. Permanent Life
Insurance combines protection for your
family with cash value that builds over
time. Once it accumulates, the cash value
becomes a “living benefit” that can be tapped
to improve your life and meet your goals.
The Unexpected. If you were to become
disabled, would your company still put
money in your 401k? With cash value to fall
back on, you could supplement disability
income and cover necessary expenses if you
were ever faced with a life-changing acci-
dent or illness. Whether it is an unexpected
home repair or a family crisis, or you need
additional dollars to address life’s challenges.
Education. College tuition and living
expenses may be paid with the cash value,
and currently most applications for student
financial aid don’t consider this asset when
determining eligibility for scholarships,
grants or loans.
Business Cash. When an opportunity
arises or your business requires immediate
funds, you can access life insurance cash
value quickly without credit applications or
lengthy approval processes.
Retirement Income. The cash value of per-
manent life insurance can be a stable asset
in your retirement portfolio that is guaran-
teed to grow, consistently and tax-deferred,
over many years.
With protection and accumulation, per-
manent life insurance helps you build a
foundation for life.

health І VISION
THE CLOSER WE ARE to the equator, the more
common a condition called pinguecula and
its more advanced version, pterygium (the ‘p’
is silent), is seen on the surface of the eye.
Pingueculae are yellowish, slightly raised
lesions that form on the white part of your
eye and cause a constant feeling of a foreign
body in the eye. The lids can no longer spread
tears evenly and dry areas result. They are
typically found in the space between your
eyelids, an area exposed to the ultraviolet
radiation of the sun. People who spend a lot
of time in the sun, and sometimes younger
people who are frequently outdoors without
sun protection often develop pinguecula.
When it continues to grow over the cornea,
it is called a pterygium.
A pterygium can stretch and distort the
cornea and some people acquire astig-
matism and suffer a decrease in vision.
Patients often seek treatment for cosmetic
reasons, as it presents as a white to yellow
mound of tissue sometimes looking very red
with irritation.
Prevention can slow the growth of a ptery-
gium, but sometimes, surgery may be indi-
cated. Surgery can leave a normal looking
appearance while also giving the patient
comfort. Pterygia recur at a rate of up to 40
percent after surgical removal.
Amniotic membrane transplantation
involves suturing or gluing a piece of surface
eye tissue onto the affected area after ptery-
gium removal. This method is very safe
and has a low recurrence rate. Primarily
used in the treatment of pterygium, amni-
otic membrane transplantation has received
global acceptance as a useful tool in almost
every type of ocular surface surgery. It
speeds ocular healing, quiets inflamma-
tion and allows restoration of a healthy
ocular surface.

SKIN І health
FOR MANY YEARS, dermatologists have been
using acid, heat, laser energy and friction on
aging, damaged skin to improve its appear-
ance and decrease the possibility of cancer
development. These controlled insults para-
doxically stimulate brighter, smoother and
healthier skin. One of the most successful
methods in dermatology has been the use
of topical and oral vitamin A acid, which
produces amazing effects in low doses yet is
toxic in higher doses.
How can a toxic irritant produce ben-
eficial results? The answer lies partially in a
concept called hormesis. Slow to be accepted
by conventional medicine because it pro-
vides an explanation of why homeopathy
may be beneficial, hormesis describes how
exposure to small doses of otherwise toxic
chemicals or physical stimulants can acti-
vate certain aspects of our immune system
involved in the removal of cellular “rubbish.”
For example, the curry spice curcumin in
small amounts is known to prevent beta-
amyloid, which is a rubbish protein that
accumulates in the brain cells of Alzheimer’s
patients. Even radiation in low doses has a
hormetic effect. Years after Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, those who survived acute radia-
tion poisoning were found to have less—not
more—cancer, including leukemia, the blood
cancer known to be caused by radiation!
The advantageous effects of hormesis are
difficult to measure in humans, but lab
studies show that thousands of compounds
have a hormetic effect on cells. Dermatology
is a specialty which holds great promise for
further development and use of hormetic
treatments. The quest is to identify which
compounds and physical stimulants cause
hormetic cellular responses that will ulti-
mately improve the skin’s overall health.

health І DENTAL
AFTER REFLECTING ON the myriad of
dental procedures it is both interesting and
rewarding to see how people’s lives can be
changed. Just recently I was reminded of this
when we attached two dental implants to
secure a previously loose denture. Although
life changing, the patient found himself
endentulous at age 43. We as dentists can
impact the quality of life by not over treating
patients with complicated and unpredictable
procedures.
There is a strong movement that is pro-
moting a minimally invasive approach to
dentistry. Retaining as much of the tooth
as possible will challenge many dentists to
improve their ability to bond restorations
to teeth and properly handle bite forces.
Reducing the tooth to a peg and placing a
crown will become obselete. The earlier a
tooth is sealed and decay is removed the
less likely the tooth will be condemned to
the aggressiveness of a full coverage restora-
tion. The more enamel that is removed the
weaker the tooth becomes. In many cases
this can be the final demise of the tooth.
Each patient presented with restorative
dentistry must understand that tooth loss
is not accidental. The key to longevity is
intercepting the breakdown before too much
tooth structure is lost. Root canal therapy
and crowns further weaken a tooth. It is up
to you to engage in these discussions with
your dentist and become proactive in the
future of your dental health.
Each patient presented with
restorative dentistry must
understand that tooth loss is
not accidental.

beauty І SPRING TIME
SPRINGTIME IS DEFINITELY HERE. Proms,
teacher appreciation days and graduation are
coming too. As we prepare to celebrate the
end of the school year, remember that our
goal at your local day spa is to make you look
and feel your best. A slimming body wrap for
example, can help you lose up to 20 inches
(results vary by individual) in one session;
making sure everything fits just right.
Spring dress styles may show off more skin,
especially when it comes to underarms. The
last thing you want to see are the shadows
that come along with shaving. Consider an
all-natural alternative to electrolysis, lasers
and waxing—Body Sugaring. A food grade
product, sugar is used to remove unwanted
hair. It is ideal for those with sensitive skin
and over time, the hair no longer returns.
One of my clients was worried about her 11
year-old daughter shaving her underarms,
so she brought her to me. After several ses-
sions most of the hair was gone. She couldn’t
believe how effective and gentle this treat-
ment was compared to other methods.
As the school year comes to an end, and
you thank your teachers, consider the gift
of health. A massage is a gift they may not
buy for themselves. Many teachers have tight
necks and shoulder muscles from grading
papers late at night and lecturing during the
day. Consider a full body massage for your
favorite teacher. For their convenience, on an
outcall basis, we can bring the massage to
their school. We set up in a quiet spot, and
perform the chair massage while they are
fully clothed, in a short 15 minute session.
This massage focuses on their targeted areas,
and it relaxes them and boosts their energy
and awareness as they return to class. What a
way to show your gratitude. This spring, give
yourself or your favorite teacher a reason to
smile—give the gift of health.

WHEN A PUPPY CELEBRATES his two-year
birthday, he is considered 14-years-old in
dog years. Either way you look at it, he is
still a puppy. When South Paws Veterinary
Surgical Specialists celebrates its two-year
anniversary this spring, it does so as a clinic
that has already hit its stride.
In a few short years, the facility has grown
to include two operating rooms, a rehabilita-
tion clinic, expanded conference room and
state-of-the-art surgical equipment. “Our
growth has been in direct response to the
needs of our clients,” says Dr. Robert (Dr. Bob)
Hancock, Surgeon and Hospital Director. “As
part of our effort to reduce pet pain and
enhance recovery, we now offer arthroscopic
and laparoscopic surgery—both of which are
minimally invasive procedures.”
In addition to these types of routine pro-
cedures, South Paws performs more complex
surgeries including total hip replacement
and heart surgery. Surgical excellence is
just one of the contributing factors in South
Paws’ success. According to Dr. Bob, the
clinic also specializes in client service, com-
munication skills and a team approach.
South Paws Team Earns Their Stripes—Equipment, Technology and Care Lead to Success
“This is what sets us apart,” he says.
During a client’s initial consult, he or she
is given a tour of the entire facility. “There
are no hidden doors, no areas that are off
limits. Our clients know we are not hiding
anything from them.” He adds that the facil-
ity’s homey feel fosters a sense of calm at a
very stressful time.
External attributes are not the sole source
of comfort, however. Every member of the
South Paws team provides comfort to its
clients. From hour-long consultations with
clients before surgery to updates from the
night techs after hours, the team is acces-
sible throughout the process.
Open communication between the staff
and referring veterinarians is also a prior-
ity. “Our practice is an extension of their
practices,” he says. “We deliberately installed
phones in the operating rooms so that,
unless we are in an intense part of a proce-
dure, we are able to talk with a referring vet.”
Facebook is a tool that South Paws is using
more frequently to stay in touch with vets
and clients alike. “We post X-rays for our vets
following procedures, they message me with

questions and concerns, and we encourage
clients to post candid photos with their pets.
It’s a great way to keep the lines of commu-
nication open,” he says.
By all accounts, the South Paws formula is
working. It was recently voted Northshore’s

we wrote our business plan,” Dr. Bob said. “I
never in a million years would have thought
we’d have come this far in two years.” South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists

health І NEUROFEEDBACK
MICHAEL, AT AN early age, was diagnosed
with a language and processing disorder. By
the time he was in eighth grade, and prior
to neurofeedback, his vocabulary consisted
of just a couple of words at a time, with
minimal processing abilities. After complet-
ing his sessions, Michael was able to speak
in full sentences, process at a faster rate, and
able to pass his Leap Test.
Jason, age 12, had difficulty focusing and
staying on task at school. Halfway through
his neurofeedback training, his family and
friends noted that he was calmer, had
better focus, and was more observant of his
surroundings.
Every year, parents like Michael’s and
Jason’s seek out therapies for their children
as an adjunct or alternative to medication.
The benefits are wide-ranging and can
make a positive impact on every area in
a child’s life. This learning process offers
many benefits without the worry of discom-
fort or pain.
Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive
technique that retrains the brain by utilizing
a learning process. Training with neurofeed-
back has been shown to improve cognitive
function, attention, mood, anxiety, sleep and
behavior. Sessions are generally twice a week
and last 45 minutes. Over time, the brain
learns to retrain itself, thus alleviating the
symptoms. Unlike medication, once the ses-
sions are completed, the benefits acquired
during the training are permanent.

Brain Works Academy (Northshore NEURO Services, Inc.) provides brain training to enhance quality of life. Cheryl Schoenberger, RRT, neurofeedback technician, has been a healthcare provider for over 30 years. Please contact us at (985) 809-7077 for a complimentary consultation.

THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT THE NORTHSHORE is known
for its picturesque outdoor spaces and scenic beauty. For
Ti Canipe, owner of Budget Blinds in Mandeville, there is
no question she has the inspired gift of guiding homeown-
ers as they frame those luscious views with everything
from window coverings, to outdoor draperies, to motorized
specialty products. “We can help you make every inch of
your home usable space,” she says. “We are surrounded by
so much natural brilliance, but we all know that the sun
needs to be tempered at times to prevent glare, control the
temperature and protect furniture and floors from fading.
That is our specialty.”
As trends evolve, Ti says so does her product line. “We
offer custom draperies, custom shower curtains and custom
headboards. We use a local seamstress to make all of our
custom items,” she says. “One of the newest, most elegant
trends is outdoor drapes. We can make your outdoor space
into an extension of your home by using products specially
made to enhance this area.” And, she adds, outdoor drapes
can block the glare on the outdoor television.
Unlike big box stores, Ti and her team make every effort
to work around clients’ schedules. Also unlike the big
box stores, Ti will personally visit the site for a consulta-
tion, product recommendations, accurate on-site measure-
ments, and a free estimate. Once products are chosen,
installation by her professional team is part of the package.
“This is something I have been doing for over a decade,”
she says. “With my background in interior design, knowl-
edge of current trends, the products at my fingertips, and a
professional installation team that works with me, we offer
unmatched quality, service and guidance.”
As a national franchise, but a locally owned business,
Budget Blinds is distinctive, in that as the owner, Ti has the
buying power of the more than 1000 franchises across the
nation, while as a locally owned small business she serves
her own community. It is the best case scenario. “Because
the franchises buy so much product collectively, I have
access to the best of the best vendors,” she notes. “We buy
only made in the U.S.A. products, unless a client specifically

requests otherwise. I have established rela-
tionships with vendors I have known for a
very long time, so their service is reliable
and they stand behind every product—just
as we do.”
Her ultimate goal is to help clients achieve
maximum use of every square inch of
their homes. Ti says window coverings can
enhance light control, provide insulation
and noise reduction, help maintain a level
of privacy, and offer aesthetic serenity to
any space. “We have elaborate products like
motorized options for those sky-high views,”
she notes. “And we have basic, simple prod-
ucts to fit the most fundamental needs at
every price point. We can accommodate any
job—no matter how large or small.”
Ti suggests you visit her Mandeville show-
room so she can assist in identifying your
specific needs and then work collaboratively

towards creating a finished product. At the
showroom, clients get a glimpse into the
many products available as well as access
to literally hundreds of fabric samples to
complement any décor. “We have such a
vast variety of products to coordinate your
home and pull the entire design together,”
she notes. “I personally work with every
client to ensure we have the correct product
to meet each purpose and the right fabric to
complete their vision.”
The sense of community here on the
Northshore has always been something Ti
has cherished, both professionally and per-
sonally. “My children are so blessed to have
known many of their friends for their entire
lives,” she says. “Our family is truly grounded
in this community.” With three teenage girls
under one roof, Ti says there is never a dull
moment—in fact there are many moments
filled with drama. “We spend just about
every weekend in the kitchen together sur-
rounded by one another and our closest
friends making lasting memories,” she says.
“My children have taught me how to adapt
and thrive and mostly, treasure our time
together.” Much like herself, her daughters
are naturally creative and artistic and may
one day follow in her footsteps.
“We are grateful to be a part of such a
flourishing community. We have come to
know so many people through our work, and
have had the opportunity to contribute as a
small business. We are vested in this com-
munity, and we plan to serve clients here for
many years to come.”Budget Blinds is located at 3535 Highway 190 in
Mandeville, in the Pontchartrain Square Shopping
Center. For a personal consultation, contact Ti at

TELL ME IF YOU’VE heard this one before.
A boy whose mother dies in childbirth must
live with his grandmother and nanny while
his father sails the ocean blue on a freighter.
After the death of
the grandmother,
the boy is sent
away to a board-
ing school in Maine
where he learns of
a fantastical book,
called The Caravan
Bestiary, describing
all of the animals
that were rejected
from Noah’s Ark.
These magnificent and monstrous hybrids
were lost in the flood waters. Oh, and there’s
the family that takes him in as their own and
offers him the love his father fails to give
him. Haven’t heard of it? Well then you’re in
for a treat.
Nicholas Christopher’s latest work, The
Bestiary, follows the life of motherless
Xeno Atlas in his quest to find the elusive
legendary book. This is a thinking man’s
quest where the mythical beasts for which
Xeno is searching don’t necessarily play the
leading role. Christopher magically uses
The Caravan Bestiary and Xeno’s search for it
as the main story, but this book is actually
about a young man’s search (even if he
doesn’t realize it) for love and family.
Nicholas Christopher has woven
beautifully the heartbreak Xeno feels at
losing the only family he has, into the
possibility of finding it in a different form.
Christopher’s enchanting book brings to the
forefront those wonderful mythical beasts
that existed in our imagination as children
and weaves them intricately into modern
day life. This is a book that should be read,
loved and placed on a shelf of honor in
every person’s home. The Bestiary, by Nicholas Christopher, is
available as a large or regular size print book,
CD, and e-book at St. Tammany Parish Library or
at area bookstores.

WITH THE ARRIVAL of spring and summer,
we think of outdoor living and the classic
American picnic. It isn’t difficult to under-
stand why these get-togethers are so
popular, as the key phrase in describing
them is “laid back.” It’s a type of party that
you can have virtually anywhere—in the
neighborhood common area, at an outdoor
concert, or around the swimming pool. They
are easily put together, their main ingredi-
ents being favorite foods and beverages. But
these affairs can run the gamut from ultra
simple to ultra sophisticated, where some
personal preferences include candlelight
and champagne. Portable grills have added
much to the fun and enjoyment of outdoor
cooking, with one of the most popular items
being a portable and disposable grill, which
comes completely packed with all acces-
sories, including charcoal. Outdoor chefs
use magnificent grills so fully equipped as
to serve in a restaurant kitchen. No matter
the menu, the food selection can be the
star of the show! Whether comfort foods,
or gourmet delights, they have only to be
palate pleasers. Here’s one that is a proven
winner which you may want to give a try
on your next outdoor “affair.” Buon appetito.
Ciao, ciao.
An Outdoor Affair
Salmone alla Griglia—Grilled SalmonSalmon steaks or fillets with skin, about 2/3
inch thick
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1/2 half cup diced shallots
1/4 cup fresh oregano
1 tablespoon white balsamic vinegar
1/2 cup baby or sliced carrots
2 diced fresh tomatoes
4 tablespoons chopped mint
1 cup sliced mangoes
1/4 cup white wine
Salt and pepper
Mix all ingredients together and let sit for
at least 1/2 hour. Brush salmon with olive oil
on both sides and place steaks or filets in
individual packs of aluminum foil. Equally
divide sauce over salmon and close packets,
making sure that both ends and top are
tightly sealed. Place on preheated grill for
8-10 minutes. Remove packets from grill and
carefully undo top of packets and serve. This
is great served with a sauvignon blanc and a
crusty bread.

WHILE MANY PEOPLE are unaware it exists, the U.S.
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Aid & Attendance
Improved Pension program provides monetary assis-
tance to wartime veterans—and surviving spouses of
deceased wartime veterans—who need regular personal
assistance. Qualifying aid or assistance can be provided
at home, in an assisted living facility, or in a nursing
home, and can be provided by friends, family members,
or healthcare professionals.
For 2012, the Aid & Attendance pension can provide up
to $1,704 per month to an single veteran, $1,094 per month
to a surviving spouse, or $2,020 per month for a veteran
who is married (and both need care) and $1,338 per month
where the spouse of a married veteran needs care.
Best of all, if the veteran qualifies, Aid & Attendance
funds are provided tax-free and in addition to monthly
pension and Social Security benefits.
If you or someone you love is a wartime veteran and
needs help with daily activities like cooking, cleaning,
dressing, driving, mobility, or other assistance, the Aid &
Attendance benefit can provide funds you need to pay for
that help. Many elderly veterans and surviving spouses
whose incomes are above the congressionally-mandated
legal limit for a VA pension may still be eligible for
monthly Aid & Attendance benefits if they have high
expenses for care, including an assisted living facility or
sitter care in their own home, that are not reimbursed by
insurance or other sources.
Who is eligible for Aid & Attendance? For a wartime
veteran or surviving spouse to qualify for this special
monthly pension, the veteran must have: 1) Served at
least 90 days of active military service; 2) Served at least
one day during a period of war (WWII, Korea, Vietnam,
Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan); 3) Been discharged
under conditions other than dishonorable; and 4) The
claimant must have limited income and assets available.
Anyone who assists a veteran or family member with
the preparation, presentation or prosecution of a claim
for VA benefits must be accredited by the VA to legally
provide assistance. A wonderful private website with
great information is www.veteranaid.org.

IT SEEMS THAT THE whole world is con-
fused. People all over the world are fight-
ing—unable to come to suitable, peaceful
agreements, unable to compromise and
spring our country into success. Shockingly,
even our old friend Mother Nature is trying
to fool us into believing that spring is here.
But remember, even with all the budding,
flowering trees and shrubs, only when the
true harbinger of spring (the pecan trees) put
out their leaves can we be certain that spring
has sprung!
If our scientists are correct in observ-
ing our planet’s warming trend, then our
plants will continue to perform normally
when given the proper care, soil and light
intensity as they and we gardeners adapt to
our “dynamic planet.” Our research centers,
laboratories and agricultural schools have
been busy growing and improving “Super
Plants” to fill our gardens with hardier vari-
eties. Go to LSUAgCenter.com/superplants
on the internet to find out which plants are
suitable to the soil conditions and climates
in your area. Ask your nurseryman to order
them now.
The Butterfly Penta thought to be a warm
weather annual, can now be planted in
late spring and be expected to survive our
warmer winters as well as our hot and humid
summers. A “frost proof” gardenia—an
The Coming of Spring
evergreen shrub—can be planted in full sun
during late spring and will flower heavily
in May and sporadically throughout the
summer. It was grown to handle our South
Louisiana cold snaps. “Shoal Creek” Vitex
can be a flowering large shrub or a beauti-
fully trimmed small tree. The long flower
spikes bloom May through June and again
in August. It is drought tolerant. “Belinda’s
Dream” Rose is a double full, medium pink,
fragrant rose producing spring through fall
when planted in full sun. The “Baby Wing”
Begonia is a vigorous warm-season annual
that will grow in partial shade/sun. It is an
excellent bedding plant that is both heat and
stress tolerant. The “Penny Mac” Hydrangea
is a flowering, deciduous shrub introduced
this year. It produces large blue or pink
flowers in May and sporadically through fall.
It can be used in mass planting or as a speci-
men plant. The “Amazon Dianthus” is a cool
weather annual that prefers full sun, can be
planted October through March, has excel-
lent tolerance to heat, and produces lasting
cut flowers.
This has already been a year of surprises
and no telling what strange and new seed-
lings and plants will take root in our gardens.
Remember, watch for the “leafing of the
pecan trees” and do try the “Super Plants” as
they have been proven to perform.

I ENJOY READING MYSTERIES. Piecing
the story together and deciphering cues
intrigues me. As a counselor, I appreciate
biographies too. Counseling is like hearing
an autobiography and a mystery. Client and
counselor partner to discover answers.
Cues are the key to figuring out an ailment
and then attaining and retaining balance.
Addressing how you are feeling is empow-
ering. Emotional, physical, intellectual and
spiritual cues show primarily through your
choices of places, things and people.
When you think places, ask questions like
where do you spend each day? What per-
centage of time do you spend at work or not
at work? When I ask clients their priorities,
usually they say their family is number one.
Yet, when they look at where they usually
are, they are surprised at the evidence to the
contrary. Typically, in family sessions, I ask
each person to “sculpt” the family as he or
she sees it. I recall a child who, when it was
his turn, seated his family around a table
but placed his father outside the room. After
seeing this visual, the father made changes
so that his son grew to see his dad in his life.
As for things, ask what items surround
you? If you are interested in working out, do
you have equipment or books about working
out? What cues are in your refrigerator? If
you have quit smoking, have you removed
your smoking props? What about people? Do
friends ask you, “What were you thinking?”
Do they ask you how you manage to do the
things you do?
Places, things and people can be life sup-
ports. The mystery is deciphering what helps
or hinders. Spring is a perfect time for uncov-
ering and cultivating healthy growths.

APTLY PLACED IN the heart of Old Mandeville,
Re-Find Boutique offers upscale consign-
ments ranging from the finest in career and
formal wear, to the most treasured vintage
accessories, furs and jewelry. “My absolute
favorite thing is to dress people from head
to toe and help them find their style vision,”
says owner Lisa Galatoire.
Lisa spent many years in the fashion
industry, and her partner, Stacy Nance Pilote,
came from the corporate management world.
Together, they offer a varied selection of
“Re-Finds” from designers like Prada, Gucci,
Coach and Miss Me Miss Me. “We can outfit
the entire woman,” Stacy says. “Whether it is
the Mom on the go looking for a sassy acces-
sory to complete her look, or the woman in
the workplace who needs to round out her
professional wardrobe—we have it.”
In addition, both ladies appreciate their
ability to give back to the community. “We
work closely with service organizations to
provide clothing to the underprivileged at
the end of their run here in the store,” Lisa
says. “That is the beauty of consignment.
Shoppers can find their absolute favorite
designers—the same ones they find at Saks
and Neiman’s—for a fraction of the price. And
consigners can earn extra money and ulti-
mately give back to those in need.” Re-Find Boutique is located in Old Mandeville
at 333 Girod Street, 985-674-4116. Find them on
Facebook.

ON SUNDAY, MARCH 19, the 28th annual Chef
Soirée continued its tradition of fine food,
music and company—all for a great cause.
More than 85 restaurants, the New Orleans
Hornets Drum Line and musical groups like
the Hurricane Levee Band, the Line King
Dancers and Burgundy, gave revelers at Bogue
Falaya Park the chance to celebrate the mild,
pleasant evening in philanthropic style, while
benefitting the Youth Service Bureau.
Guests took this year’s “Going Green,” theme to heart as
they enjoyed exquisite cuisine and beverages from around
the metro area, music and an all-around lovely evening.
Thanks to all of the participants and attendees, Chef Soirée
2012 was indeed a success.

Eye on the Louisiana LegislatureTHE PARISH COUNCIL and I met with members of our
delegation in preparation for the Louisiana Legislature’s
2012 Regular Legislative Session which began in early
March. Of particular concern is the state possibly
mandating that local governments take on the costs of
any programs the state cuts as it balances the budget.
Shifting costs from one government agency to another
saves nothing. Whether state government or parish
government, we are all trying to make wise decisions
and live within our budgetary means.
Of particular interest is a bill introduced specifically
for St. Tammany Parish. Each year, the state remits a
portion of the hotel/motel tax collected in the parish
back to the parish. These funds have been invested
in tourism, facilities and economic development. We
are proposing to increase the economic development
percentage of the fund from 15 percent to 45 percent.
While this will mean a smaller budget for tourism at
this time, it will be sufficient for them to continue their
excellent work. This is also a partnership that makes
sense and will increase everyone’s resources over time.
It is easy to recognize the direct benefits in jobs that
new businesses bring to our parish. In addition, busi-
ness has a significant impact on the travel industry.
Each new business brings in business travelers. We
want more of those travelers in St. Tammany Parish.
Follow the legislature on Access St. Tammany

The Sweet, Simple, StrawberryWITH MORE THAN 400 annual festivals there is no
debating that Louisiana is the Festival Capital of the
World. From January to December, Louisianans love
to celebrate their rich heritage and diverse cultures of
food, music, indigenous wildlife and harvested crops.
We love to play hard and enjoy celebrating life, but we
in South Louisiana also work hard.
Ponchatoula, surrounded by rich cypress forests,
originated as a logging camp; not easy work. Later,
Ponchatoula became known throughout the country
for its strawberries that were bigger, sweeter and more
hardy than the strawberry crops from other parts of
the country. The first railroad depot to transport our
strawberries from north to south was built in 1853,
and the planting, growing, harvesting and transporting
of this delectable fruit was not for the weak of mind,
body or spirit.
In April 2012, Ponchatoula with its annual Strawberry
Festival, will continue to celebrate the spirit of the past
as well as the hard-working men and women of today.
Yes, we still have strawberry farmers who continue the
traditions their families began a hundred years ago,
but we also have retailers, financial advisors, artists,
educators, MBAs, health professionals and community
supporters. On April 13 through the 15, let’s celebrate
the simple sweet strawberry and all life has to offer!

West Chamber Awarded 5-star AccreditationTHE U.S. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE bestowed upon
us, a 5-Star Accreditation last month. Less than 100 of
the 7,000 chambers across our country can boast this
remarkable achievement. Accreditation is not a man-
datory designation, it is a choice. This was our third
accreditation process, completed every five years, and
our goal was to raise our star rating from four to five.
It was a true team effort of staff and board leaders,
who spent hours completing the lengthy and detailed
application. Our task: demonstrate competency in nine
core areas ranging from governance, finance and gov-
ernmental affairs, to communications, technology and
facilities. The result of our daily commitment to provide
business support and a strong voice of business, is evi-
denced by this impressive rating.
I must mention special praise for Emily Miller who
oversaw this special project. She delved into our files to
back up our answers and ensure everything was accu-
rate. Our Communications and Administrative Officer,
Michelle Biggs, completed updates to our communica-
tions, technology and governmental affairs programs,
enabling us to answer “yes” to critical questions.
I also want to thank our 2011 Board of Directors, espe-
cially our 2011 chairman, Lisa Blossman, and our 2012
chairman, Kieran Weldon, for their time in offering their
leadership, experience and courageous decision making,
and for their encouragement and confidence that we
would meet this 5-star goal. Every Chamber member as
well as every resident of Mandeville, Covington and sur-
rounding communities should be extraordinarily proud
of this milestone.

Some Enchanted EveningI AM EXTENDING an invitation to you as well as your
family and friends, to come out to Heritage Park on
Saturday, April 21, for the city’s tenth annual Some
Enchanted Evening with the Louisiana Philharmonic
Orchestra. Admission is free.
The evening begins at 5 p.m. with an Enchanted Art
Walk where local artists will demonstrate their talents
and have their works on display. And of course there’s
the annual Mayor’s Picnic Contest. I’m challenging
everyone to get their family and friends together and
create the perfect picnic scene. In the past we’ve had
patriotic picnics, Cajun cooking and all kinds of clever
themes. The concert begins at 6 p.m. So grab your
blankets, picnic baskets, ice chests and decorations and
come out to Heritage Park to enjoy a magical evening.
During intermission, I will recognize the most cre-
ative picnic spreads and announce the winners of
each of these three categories: Perfect Interlude (most
romantic setting); Chromatic Overtures (most creative
picnic spread); and Grand Staff (best presentation by an
organization or office group). Participants should regis-
ter near the gazebo in Heritage Park starting at 5 p.m.
I will also recognize the inaugural members of the
Cultural Explorers Club for children. For more informa-
tion about this free program, visit the city’s website at
www.slidell.la.us.
