Why Use Anodes?

The protection of the underwater metal parts on your boat or motor from corrosive electrolytic action is a very real and necessary concern. The use of an activated alloy such as an anode will help (anodes will attract the corrosion action to themselves and away from expensive metal parts). Fortunately anodes are relatively inexpensive and are readily available. Factors such as warm water temperatures, polluted water and stray current corrosion can cause your anodes to waste away at an accelerated rate so it is wise to check them on a regular basis.

What is Electrolytic Corrosion?

When two dissimilar metals are electrically connected and submerged in a solution or electrolyte a natural chemical reaction takes place. This chemical reaction forms a circuit where the least noble metal (the anode) will begin to break down leaving the most noble metal (the cathode) intact.For example, a sailboat may have many metals electronically connected in a salt-water solution. The stainless steel shaft is more active (least noble) than the bronze propeller. In this case the stainless steel shaft will naturally begin to breakdown leaving the propeller intact. Since propeller shafts are expensive to replace it is easy to protect these metals by adding a Martyr anode such as a CMX or Prop Nut. The Martyr anode is highly active and will corrode instead of the other metals it is electrically connected to.

Reversing Pumps are used when hydraulic steering is fitted on boats up to 65 feet L.O.A. (depending on rudder torque). The pumps are switched on by the automatic pilot and make a steering correction to left or right determined by the direction of rotation of the pump motor. The motors are of the permanent magnetic type and reversing direction is accomplished by reversing the motor input current.

The pump has only three moving parts and requires no complicated check valves to prevent rudder movement when de-energized. Output flow is completely adjustable to 50% of rated flow allowing the pump output to be adjusted precisely to the volume of steering cylinder fitted. The pump is exceptionally reliable and delivers more than twice the hydraulic output per watt of input than gear pumps manufactured by competitors.

Motors are heavy duty, a full 85 mm in diameter with long brushes and sealed ball bearings for long service life. The moulded rubber mounting foot can be rotated to allow the pump to be mounted on any surface. Supplied with three flexible hoses terminating in inch JIC swivel fittings which can be easily adapted to piping systems.

A useful range of accessories can be used to enhance the pump by incorporating added valves and solid state FET switching.

CONTINUOUS RUNNING PUMPSETS (HEAVY)

General Description

Octopus CRA Pumpsets are continuously running D.C. motor driven pumps which are used for autopilot drive service on larger yachts and small commercialvessels. These pumpsets can be used on steering cylinders up to 60 cu.in. (1000 cu.cm.) in volume. Unlike reversing pumps, which in sizes over 1/2 gallon/min (2000 cc/min) are rarely capable of delivering full steering pressure, these pumps deliver over 500 psi (35 bar) and are very economical in power consumption. Rudder control is achieved by energizing coils in a solenoid valve. As these coils draw only 12 watts it is possible to drive the pump directly from the autopilot control without a power switch. This significantly reduces the cost of the automatic pilot.

Standard Features

4. COMPLETELY WATERPROOF CONSTRUCTION: The motor, solenoid valve, starting relay and terminal connections are all enclosed in a waterproof cover. Ample space makes wiring easy.

5. MANIFOLDED HYDRAULIC CONNECTION WITH SHUT OFF VALVES Servicing this unit is easy as it can be disconnected from the steering system by closing three shut-off valves and removing the pump without draining the steering system.

6. RUNNING INDICATOR LAMP: A running indicator lamp shows the motor is running. The lamp also indicates correct motor polarity.

Octopus CRA Pumpsets are continuously running DC motor driven pumps used for autopilot drive service on larger yachts and commercial vessels. These pumpsets can be used on steering cylinders up to 60 cu.in. (1000 cc.) displacement.

Hydraulic oil is cooled as it returns to the reservoir keeping the whole pump system cool during extended passages.

Rudder control is achieved by energizing coils in a solenoid valve. As these coils draw only 12 watts it is possible to drive the pump directly from the autopilot with a 2.0 amp output.

General Description

Octopus CRA Pumpsets are continuously running D.C. motor driven pumps which are used for autopilot drive service on larger yachts and small commercialvessels. These pumpsets can be used on steering cylinders up to 60 cu.in. (1000 cu.cm.) in volume. Unlike reversing pumps, which in sizes over 1/2 gallon/min (2000 cc/min) are rarely capable of delivering full steering pressure, these pumps deliver over 500 psi (35 bar) and are very economical in power consumption. Rudder control is achieved by energizing coils in a solenoid valve. As these coils draw only 12 watts it is possible to drive the pump directly from the autopilot control without a power switch. This significantly reduces the cost of the automatic pilot.

Standard Features

4. COMPLETELY WATERPROOF CONSTRUCTION: The motor, solenoid valve, starting relay and terminal connections are all enclosed in a waterproof cover. Ample space makes wiring easy.

5. MANIFOLDED HYDRAULIC CONNECTION WITH SHUT OFF VALVES Servicing this unit is easy as it can be disconnected from the steering system by closing three shut-off valves and removing the pump without draining the steering system.

6. RUNNING INDICATOR LAMP: A running indicator lamp shows the motor is running. The lamp also indicates correct motor polarity.

Get Home System Sea Trials At an Impressive 4.5 Knots

The peace of mind offered by a Get Home system has been well documented. Boat owners like to know they have backup should they lose their engine. WESMARs new APU Auxiliary Propulsion System,* popularly referred to as a get home system uses hydraulic power from the vessels generator to drive the propeller shaft, to get you home.

The compact, rugged design of the APU has caught the eye of customers around the world.

A story reached us recently from our Technical Team Specialist in China, David Yen, who reported an amazing 4.5 knot speed during sea trials of the WESMAR APU, Central Hydraulics and Roll Fin Stabilizers on a 60-foot Queenship Passagemaker yacht.

Yen reported that using a hydraulic pump powered by a 20KW Genset, the APU achieved a boat speed of 4.5 knots. The boat, recently commissioned, is currently on its way to the West Coast of the U.S. and will be delivered to its new owner in February.

The elegant yacht was built in China by Hershine Marine and the WESMAR APU, along with WESMAR Central Hydraulics and Stabilizer Systems were installed at the factory. Adding the APU only involved an

additional valve on the Central Hydraulics.

The beauty of WESMARs new APU is that it can be operated right from the bridge by simply turning the key and using the proportional joystick for forward and aft propulsion. Once the system is engaged with the key lock at the helm the system is activated and you are immediately in control andunderway.

It is highly desirable for many other uses as well, such as maneuvering while sight-seeing with little cost in fuel, quiet operation for late night and early morning departures, and quiet trolling speeds for fishing.

What has not been widely reported is that the speed provided is impressive as well. In addition to back up safety, imagine the fuel savings in using the generator to propel the boat when high speed is not necessary.

This beautiful Queenship Passagemaker 60, built in China, will make its debut into the US in February with a cruising package that includes a WESMAR get home APU system, WESMAR Central Hydraulics, and WESMAR Roll Fin Stabilizers. Recent sea trials clocked the get home system at 4.5 knots.
