A filky-minded project for THE PRINTED MATTER

VIRTUAL ART BOOK FAIR online at www.pmvabf.org

February 24-28, 2021

CATALOG NOTES In recognition that visitors to www.pmvabf.org will have more than 400 virtual booths to choose from, our list for Printed Matter’s Virtual Art Book Fair gets directly the point: LET’S ALL GET TOGETHER AND GET FILKED UP! To hazard a guess, we’re betting that “filk” is a genre of music that either A) - you’ve never heard of ; or B) - are secretly obsessed with. We stumbled across this collection months ago and landed squarely on “B.” The sights and sounds of filking seem to be perfectly in tune with the delirium of our times. The following pages highlight a gloriously goofy (and seriously fascinating) collection of fanzine-format filk songbooks that were created by and for participants in sci-fi and fantasy fan convention song circles, ca. 1979-1998. We hope you enjoy it. And we dearly look forward to seeing you again in person at future Art Book Fairs.

"Filksinging should be done in private by consenting adults.”

—Marion Zimmer Brad ley

Forty-five (45) fanzine-format ‘filk’ music songbooks, ca.1979-1998. From the collection of Lily Fulford. A private collection of lyric and chord books (some with musical notation), illustrated throughout with reproductions of original drawings, collages, and clip art. 4to. Very good. Chiefly stab-stapled ; some with comb bindings or brass pin-tabs. [1177] On hold We are pleased to offer this remarkably rich collection of "filksong" fanzines from a golden era of the genre, when hotel-based weekend long sci-fi and fantasy fan conventions flourished across Southern California and throughout the Midwest. According to lore, “filk" music dates back to at least the mid-1950s, when a typographical error is said to have spawned the term. Since then the genre has continued through the present day, and has evolved to include diverse styles of music, including hip hop and punk rock. While the core of the genre seems pertains to media fandom, filk musicians have also written about the emergence of personal computing technology, meteorology, fossils, academic life, cats, and relationship woes. Significant figures from the world of filk are well represented,
