FOOTPRINTS

The School of Social Work, managed by the Institute of Social Service Mangalore of Karnataka State, was established in 1960 in Mangalore by the Society of Daughters of the Heart of Mary, an International Catholic Religious Society, founded in France in 1790 during the French Revolution. It is a pioneer Post Graduate Centre for Social Work Education in Karnataka, listed as a ‘Minority’ Institution. It believes in the dictum - “Small is Beautiful”. It is situated on a six acre campus and besides the college, there are service centres such as Kindergarten, Family Service Agency, Family Counselling Centre and CHILD LINE.

From the gospel it draws high ideals of life and service based on the values of respect for all human beings, freedom and equality. It seeks to contribute to the vision of a humane, just and harmonious society.

The ambience of the Institute nurtures a homely atmosphere - a healthy teacher-pupil relationship of respect and understanding based on freedom with responsibility.

The Government of Karnataka has conferred“Autonomous College”status on School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, with effect from 2007-2008

The College has been recognized by the U.G.C as ‘College withPotential for Excellence’ in the year 2010.The College has been Re-Accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ Grade( CGPA 3.42 out of 4 ) in the year 2010.

CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE

Moral conviction and dependable self-discipline are as important as academic competence and there is no substitute for self-discipline. The students shall conduct themselves both within and outside the College premises in a befitting manner.

As per the Order of the Honourable Supreme Court of India, ragging in any manner is considered a punishable criminal offence and is banned. Any student found indulging in ragging, in what ever manner, either directly or indirectly, shall be severely dealt with.

The following acts of omission and/or commission,which are by no means exhaustive, but are only indicative, shall constitute gross violation of the Code of Conduct and are liable to invoke appropriate disciplinary action by the DAC.

w Lack of courtesy and decorum ; indecent behavior anywhere within or outside the College campus.

w Willful damage or stealthy removal of any property/belongings of the College/Hostel/fellow students/citizens.

w Possession,consumption or distribution of alcoholic drinks or any kind of substance abuse.

w Smoking is strictly prohibited.

w Mutilation/unauthorized possession of library books/laboratory equipment’s.

w Use of Mobile phones in the classroom(whether or not the session is in progress), and the laboratory/library/examination hall of the College building is strictly prohibited, and if a student is found violating this rule, apart from being liable for disciplinary action,

the mobile phone(s) shall be confiscated.

w In the College canteen, the corner ear-marked for the Teachers and Staff, and also other places ear-marked ‘Staff only’ shall not be occupied/used by the students under any circumstances. The students shall not use the canteen for purposes other than for which it is intended.

w Any other act of gross indiscipline as decided by the Competent Authority from time to time.

For an offence committed in the hostel/classroom/laboratory/library/Campus any Teacher shall have the right to reprimand.

All cases of serious offence and cases of malpractice/and or adoption of unfair means in an examination shall be reported to the Chairperson, DAC.

Books, magazines, newspapers and any other literature not approved by the Principal shall not be brought to the College and circulated.

Students shall not take part in any political party-centered agitation.

Day scholars are permitted to remain in the campus only as long as the library is open.

The College,though not responsible for the conduct of its students outside the premises, will take cognizance of any serious misconduct committed outside by them.

Students who do not live with their parents, near relatives or guardians, are expected to live in a hostel approved by the College authorities.

HOSTELOn the campus, there is a hostel which accommodates female

students. The extension of this hostel is located at Mangaladevi, 2 km away from the college campus.

THE SALIENT FEATURES OF THE CREDIT-BASED SEMESTER SCHEME (AUTONOMOUS)

We understand “Autonomy” as FREEDOM WITH RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY.

Each semester shall carry certain number of credits. Credits represent the weight age of a course and area function of teaching, learning and evaluation strategies, such as number of contact hours, the course content, pedagogy, learning expectations, and maximum marks. In general, a two-hour instruction per week in a semester is assigned one credit. In terms of evaluation, one credit is equivalent to 50 marks in a semester. On this basis,a three year B.A./B.S.W.degree programme will have a maximum of 100 credits. The other features of the Credit- based Semester Scheme are as follows:

• The relative importance of subjects of study and activities are quantified in terms of credits and also their overall relative importance.

• The subjects of study include Foundation Courses, General Studies and Inter disciplinary subjects.

• The students are required to take part in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and their participation is compulsory as a part of the credit-based system.

• The curricula and the question papers are unitized.

• The declaration of result is based on the aggregate percentage of marks obtained as well as on the Grade Point Average(GPA) earned.

Maximum Period for Completion of the Programme

The term “completing the programme” means passing all the prescribed examinations of the programme to become eligible for the degree. No candidate shall be permitted to appear for the examinations after the prescribed maximum period for completing the programme. The Maximum Period shall be double the duration fixed for the normal programmes, i.e. six academic years for the B.A./B.S.W. Degree Programme.

ATTENDANCE

• Students must be present on the first day of every Semester. Classes will be held between 8.45 a.m and 4.30 p.m on Mondays to Fridays and between 8.45 a.m and 12.45 p.m on Saturdays.

• A candidate shall be considered to have satisfied the requirement of attendance for a semester if he/she attends not less than 75% of the classes actually conducted up to the end of the semester in each of the subjects. However, there shall be no minimum attendance requirement for the Co. & Extra-Curricular activities.

• All students must attend every lecture/tutorial/practical classes including Value Education and religion Classes wherever applicable.

• Notwithstanding the other criteria, a student must have attended at least 75% of the actual number of classes held including Religion/Value Education/Mentoring, which ever is applicable, to be eligible to contest for any posts of the Students’ Council of the College, and the same condition shall be applicable to the award of Merit Certificates as well.

• Only Approved Leave of Absence, i.e. representing the College in any officially sponsored events like NCC/NSS/Sports/Extra- curricular/Placement activities outside the College campus shall be condoned by the Principal to the extent of actual number of days/hours participated on recommendation to that effect from the respective Dean,under whom the student is placed for the course of study.

• Under no circumstances shall a student with less than 75% attendance in one or more subject(s) during a semester, be permitted to take the whole of the End-Semester Examinations and shall seek re-admission to that Semester in a subsequent year.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

• Internal Assessment shall be limited to 20% of the maximum marks allotted to the Paper/subject.

• There shall be no minimum in respect of internal assessment marks.

• Appearing for Terminal Examination is compulsory. No re-exam will be allowed.

• Students are expected to be seated in the Examination hall 10 minutes before the scheduled commencement of the Terminal/ End Semester Examination.

PARENT’S RESOURCE GROUP (PRG)

The PRG is a voluntary association of parents with no financial obligation whatsoever. Parents’ Resource Group has been constituted only in respect of UG courses of study with the following objectives:

a. To promote the spirit of ‘Participatory Management Approach’ in parents to facilitate teaching-learning as a learner-centred process.

b. To seek and to offer suggestions/recommendations/advice/ co-operation on issues concerning the students/teachers/administration with a view to improve the quality of education.

c. To strengthen the network of stake holders with a view to build up a support-base on fellowship basis.

d. To promote student welfare.

MENTORING

Under this system,a group of 15-20 students are placed (for the entire duration of their study) under the care and guidance of a faculty designated as MENTOR, who shall be responsible for the over- all development of the students under his/her care. Mentor shall monitor the progress of the students under him/her on a regular and continuous basis, and advice/take remedial measures, as and when needed to help the students improve

The college has an elected body of student - representatives at the UG - level. The Students’ Council elections shall be generally held with in a month from the commencement of every Academic Year as per the provisions of the Constitution drafted and adopted for this purpose by the College, and incompliance with the guidelines laid down by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in this regard. There are FIVE Cabinet Posts and the SIX Posts of class Representatives in the Students’ Council. The tenure of office shall be One-Year, i.e, only for the Academic Year during which the elections are held. A senior faculty shall be designated as ELECTION OFFICER, who shall be responsible for conducting the elections in a fair, transparent, democratic way.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Objectives:

• To provide relevant and meaningful information on the service sector to the Alumni members.

• To provide space for the experienced Alumni practitioners, academicians and researchers to share their experience and opinions.

• To introduce and provide as pace to debate on the new and up-coming theories in different service sectors.
