    Getting Started

    Step 1: Preparing a

    Power SourceRemove the film on the display windowbefore you use the IC recorder.

    Inserting the batteries1 Slide and lift the battery

    compartment lid.

    2 Insert LR03 (size AAA) alkalinebatteries with correct polarity, andclose the lid.

    If the battery compartment lid is

    accidentally detached, attach it as

    illustrated.

    TipsWhen replacing the batteries, messagesrecorded or alarm settings are not erasedeven when you remove the batteries.

    When replacing the batteries, the clockcontinues moving for a certain period oftime after you remove the batteries.

    NotesDo not use manganese batteries for this ICrecorder.

    When replacing the batteries, be sure toreplace both batteries with new ones.

    Do not charge dry batteries.

    When you are not going to use the ICrecorder for a long time, remove thebatteries to prevent damage from batteryleakage and corrosion.

    Clock setting display appears and theyear section flashes when you insertbatteries for the first time, or when youinsert batteries after the IC recorder

    has been without batteries for a certainperiod of time. Please refer to Continueddirectly from Step 1: Preparing a PowerSource on page 16to set the date andtime.

    Note while accessingThe IC recorder is accessing data whenACCESS appears in the display window

    or the operation indicator flashes inorange. While the IC recorder is accessingdata, do not remove the batteries or

    connect or disconnect the USB ACadaptor (not supplied). Doing so maydamage the data.

    NoteIf the IC recorder is required to process alarge amount of data, the message may bedisplayed for an extended period of time. Thisis not a malfunction of the IC recorder.Wait until the animation disappears beforestarting operation.

    Step 2: Setting theClock

    1 Press or + to set the year,month, day, hour, and minute insequence, then press PLAY/STOPENTER.

    2 Press (stop) to return to thedisplay of the stop mode.

    Setting the clock using themenu

    While the IC recorder is in the stop mode,you can set the clock using the menu.

    1 Press and hold DISPLAY/MENU toenter the menu mode.

    The menu mode will be displayed inthe display window.

    2 Press or + to selectSET DATE, then press PLAY/STOPENTER.

    Turning the ICRecorder On or Off

    When you are not using the IC recorder,you can prevent the batteries fromgetting weak quickly by turning the

    power off.

    Turning the power off

    Slide the HOLD switch in the directionof the arrow in the stop mode. HOLD

    flashes. The IC recorder turns off within afew seconds.

    Turning the power on

    Slide the HOLD switch in the oppositedirection from that of the arrow. The ICrecorder turnes on.

    TipsWhen you are not going to use the ICrecorder for a long time, we recommend toturn off the IC recorder.

    When 10 minutes have passed after youhave turned on the IC recorder and leave itwithout doing anything, the display goesoff automatically. (Press any button to showthe display.)

    enter the menu mode.

    recorded message. Speak into the built-in microphones.

    3 Press (stop) to stop recording.The IC recorder stops at the beginningof the current recording.

    If you do not change the folder after youstop recording, the next time you recordyou will record in the same folder.

    TipsBefore you start recording, we recommend

    you make a trial recording first.When you purchase the IC recorder, thereare 5 folders already available, and you canrecord up to 99 messages in each folder.

    While recording you can lock all thefunctions of all the buttons so that you canprevent inadvertent operations by sliding

    the HOLD switch in the direction of thearrow.

    NotesWhile the operation indicator is flashingin orange, do not remove the batteries orconnect or disconnect the USB AC adaptor.

    Doing so may damage the data.Noise may be recorded if an object, suchas your finger, etc., accidentally rubs orscratches the IC recorder during recording.

    Before making a recording, be sure to checkthe battery indicator (page 13).

    To avoid replacing batteries during a long

    recording session, use a USB AC adaptor (notsupplied) (page 85).

    The maximum recording time varies if yourecord messages in mixed recording mode.

    Monitoring the recordingConnect commercially availableheadphones to the (headphone)

    jack and monitor the recording. You

    can adjust the monitoring volume bypressing VOL + or , but the recording

    level is fixed.

    Remaining memory indicationDuring recording, the remaining memory

    indicator decreases one by one.

    The memory isnearly full.

    Flashing

    When the remaining time of recordingreaches 10 minutes, the last one of theindication flashes.If the remaining recording time display

    mode is selected, the remainingrecording time display will also flashwhen the remaining time reaches 1

    minute. The display will be changedautomatically to the remaining timedisplay.When the memory is full, recording

    automatically stops and and FULLwill flash in the display window three

    times. To continue recording, first erasesome of the messages.

    You can set the VOR (Voice Operated

    Recording) function to ON, to make theIC recorder start recording when the ICrecorder detects sound, and pause whenno sound is heard, eliminating recordingduring soundless periods.

    The VOR function is set to OFF when

    you purchase the IC recorder.

    1 Press and hold DISPLAY/MENU toenter the menu mode.

    The menu mode window will be

    displayed.

    2 Press or + to select VOR,then press PLAY/STOPENTER.

    3 Press or + to select ON,then press PLAY/STOPENTER.

    4 Press (stop) to exit the menumode.

    5 Press REC/PAUSE. and VOR appear in the displaywindow.

    The recording starts when the IC recorder

    detects sound. The recording pauseswhen no sound is detected and VORand PAUSE flash. When the IC recorder

    detects sound again, the recording startsagain.

    To cancel the VOR functionSet VOR to OFF in step 3.

    NoteThe VOR function is affected by the soundaround you. Set SENS in the menu according

    to the recording conditions. If recording isnot satisfactory after you have changed themicrophone sensitivity, or for an importantrecording, set VOR to OFF in the menu.

    Dividing a Messageinto Two During

    Recording

    DIVIDE

    You can divide a message during

    recording so that the message is divided

    into two parts, and a new messagenumber is added to the newer part of

    the divided message.

    When you divide a message into two, at thepoint of division, the end of the first messageand the beginning of the second messagemay be interrupted.

    If you divide messages too frequentlywhile the IC recorder is recording them, thefollowing phenomenon may occur: Theoperation indicator keeps flashing, and youcannot operate the IC recorder for a certainperiod. This is not a malfunction. Wait untilthe operation indicator goes off.

    The battery life is short. The battery life on page 13 is based on playback with thevolume level set to 27. The battery life may shorten dependingon the operation of the IC recorder.

    It takes a long time for theIC recorder to start.

    If the IC recorder is required to process a large amount ofdata, it may take longer for the IC recorder to start. This is nota malfunction of the IC recorder. Wait until the start-up display

    disappears.

    The IC recorder does notoperate correctly.

    Take out the batteries and insert them again (page 12).

    The IC recorder is notrecognized by yourcomputer.

    A folder/file cannot betransferred from yourcomputer.

    Disconnect the IC recorder from your computer and reconnectit.

    Do not use a USB hub or USB extension cable other than the

    Your computer may be in the system standby/hibernate mode.Do not let your computer enter into the system standby/hibernate mode while being connected to the IC recorder.

    No speaker is built-in or connected to the computer.

    Turn up the volume on the computer. (Refer to the instructionmanual of the computer.)

    The volume of WAV files can be changed and saved using theIncrease Volume feature of the Microsoft Sound Recorder.

    Saved message filescannot be played back or

    edited.

    You cannot play back a message whose file format the DigitalVoice Editor software does not support. Depending on the

    file format, you cannot use part of editorial features of thesoftware.

    Counter or slider movesincorrectly.There is noise.

    This happens when you play back messages that you divided,combined, overwrote, or added a recording. Save a message inthe hard disk first, and then add it to the IC recorder. Select thesaving file format that suits the IC recorder you use.

    Operation is slow whenthere are many messages. When the total number of messages increases, the operationbecomes slower, regardless of the length of the recording time.

    Display does not workduring saving, adding, ordeleting of messages.

    It takes a longer time to copy or delete long messages. Aftercompleting operations, the display works normally.

    It takes too long to

    convert a file format.

    The time required for file conversion becomes longer as the file

    size is bigger.

    Symptom Remedy

    The software hangs whenthe Digital Voice Editorsoftware starts up.

    Do not disconnect the connector of the IC recorder while thecomputer is communicating with the IC recorder. Otherwisethe computer operations become unstable or the data insidethe IC recorder may be damaged

    There may be conflict between the software and other driveror application.

    As there are already 99 messages in the current folder, youcannot record a new message. Erase some messages beforerecording.

    FULL (folder indicatorflashes at the same time) As there are already 99 messages in the folder to which youwant to move a message, you cannot move the message. Erasesome messages before moving.

    SET DATE Set the clock; otherwise, you cannot set the alarm.

    NO DATA The selected folder does not have any messages. You cannotlock a message, erase a message(s) or set the alarm, etc.

    PRE SET You set the alarm when you have already set it previously.Check the setting and set the appropriate date and time.

    BACK-D You set the alarm when the time has already passed. Check thesetting and set the appropriate date and time.

    You selected a message that has been locked. You cannot adda new message to it, cannot orverwrite it, and cannot erase it.

    Set LOCK to OFF in the menu before erasing the message.

    NO EDIT The selected message is not the one that was recorded usingthe IC recorder. You cannot divide it, add a recording to it, oroverwrite it, etc.

    OFF REC-OP You cannot add a recording or overwrite a recording becauseREC-OP is set to OFF. Set it to ON.
