The Sonora Lions Club hosted the Eighth Annual

Glenn Bass Run on September 14 at the Sonora High

School Wildcat Ranch.

The weather was perfect with 41 runners registered to

run. The races consisting of a 1 mile walk/run and a 5K

run. The runners were classed by age and sex. The So-

nora Rotary used their electronic timing equipment so

that each runner was accurately timed, and their results

were available immediately at the conclusion of each

race. What a fantastic improvement this is over the

handheld stop watches used to time the runners in the

past, and the long process of recording the results. This

was the second time the Rotary Club used their equip-

ment and the Sonora Lions are very appreciative of the

Rotary Clubs help.

The races started at 8 A.M. and the event was over be-

fore noon. The runners ranged from a six year old boy

and a seven year old girl to an eighty five year old

young lady and a seventy three year old sprightly

young man. First thru third place ribbons were awarded

in the different age and sex groups. Medals for the

overall best time male and female runners were also

awarded.

Sept. 4 The meeting was opened in regular form by Lions Pres-

ident Jerri Regelin, who introduced our guest speaker

for today, Serina Ortega. She is an active member of

the T.W.I.S.T. organization in Tuolumne, The Wom-

en’s Improvement Society of Tuolumne. After singing

our Welcome song to her, she replied, “Very Good.

Thank you”. (I can’t believe anyone says our singing is

“very good”!)

Our Secret Lion:

?? said everyone had shook his hand, so everyone had

to pay a quarter.

Lion Glenn Gottschall was not present today, so we

could not sing our special rendition of the Birthday

Song to him – and that would really have impressed

our guest Serina.

Announcements:

Lion Kenny Ayers was called to the front and presented

with a Centennial Pin for our club increase in member-

ship during his term as President. ~ Lion Phil B. said

we need more Raffle prizes, and everyone needs to sell

tickets, but otherwise we are good to go for the Lobster

Dinner. ~ Lion Wendy P. said that Lion Mickey

Lufkin, the wonderful violinist who has entertained us

at two meetings, has volunteered to play at the Lobster

Dinner. He said we could even auction off his services

for a party or celebration, as another fundraiser! ~ The

group of members who traveled to the Chicken Ranch

Bingo Hall last week gave a report on their impressions

of the facility, including the proposed menu and park-

ing. The Board will discuss this at next week’s Board

meeting, and make a recommendation on the change of

venue. ~ The results of the survey about the meetings

showed that most members wish to continue having

weekly meetings on Wednesdays, and very few wished

to have evening meetings. ~ Lion Ruth M. reported that

the Sonora Trading Post has again donated a $500 gift

certificate for the Grand Prize at the Lobster Dinner.

Please remember to thank the owners and staff for this

generous donation every time you are in their store. ~

Lions John and Ruth apologize profusely for not men-

tioning in the last newsletter the important fact that at

the Merced Breakfast Lions Club BBQ, Lion Judy

Meeks had purchased a $70 Kahlua chocolate cake –

which was delicious! ~ Lion Jim G. passed around a

signup sheet for the Glenn Bass Run.

Happy/Sad Bucks

Lion Kenny A. reported on his trip to Cayucos, where

the weather was fantastic. He said he did The Hokey

Pokey and turned himself around. ~ Lion John M. real-

ized at 9:30 PM last night that he had not yet printed

out the newsletter, even though he had emailed it to

everyone. ~ Lion Frank M. related a family story – at a

get together, a little girl came up to a group of adults

and asked if girls her age could get pregnant. When

told no, she was too young to get pregnant, she said

okay, and returned to her group of friends yelling,

“Okay, back to the barn, we can keep playing the same

game!”. ~ Lion Wendy P. recited a delightful rhyme

about remembering the days of the months.

Raffle Winners:

Today the lucky people were Lions Kevin C., Bob P.,

and John M., and the Critter went to Lion Kenny A.

Program:

Serina Ortega gave some history of the Women’s Im-

provement Society of Tuolumne. The West Side Lum-

ber Mill was very active in the late 1800’s and early

1900’s, and at that time Tuolumne was a lively town.

Then WIC was the Women’s Improvement Club, and

was active in helping build the museum and library, set

up the cemetery and road to it, and started the Lumber

Jubilee, including the famous Tug of War. Over the

years the WIC faded away, but was restarted as TWIST

around 2002. The group has donated $100,010 in

scholarships, has started a downtown garbage pickup

(Ten tons picked up the first year), painted the trees

lining the streets in town, and planted flowers. There

are about 225 members in the group, and they just love

to help out everywhere. Her brother is Mitch Helstab,

recently retired principal at Summerville Elementary,

who was a strong supporter of Read to Succeed. She

Pictured above: Lion President Jeri presented our purple tote bag and copy of our newsletter to our guest speaker Serina Ortega following her very interesting

discussion of the Women’s Improvement Society. Lion Cat Reuter looks on.

Sept. 11 The meeting was opened in regular form by Lion Presi-

dent Jerri Regelin. Members joined in observing a

minute’s silence in remembrance of the 9/11/01 attack

on our nation.

We were pleased to have Lion Dr. Doug Fleming join

us today, since he is usually at work at his office during

our meeting times. We welcomed him, but still fined

him for not wearing any Lions insignia.

Secret Lion:

Our Secret Lion today, Lion

Tim A., stood and said,

“Start giving up those dol-

lars” to all the members

who neglected to shake his

hand this morning – and so

they did.

Raffle Winners today were

Lions Bob B. and Ray B.,

and the Critter went home

with Lion Bud R. again.

Happy/Sad Bucks:

Lion Jill S. had a Sad Buck, since she had been ill and

was unable to attend a wedding in Park City, Utah. She

is also upset that her car continues to nag her. ~ Lion

Frank M. reported that his wife obtained hearing aids

three weeks ago, and now keeps telling him to stop all

his “personal sounds”. ~ Lion Donna E. said she had a

great time at the club party last Saturday at the Rege-

lin’s, and that the filet was superb. This comment was

followed by a loud round of applause to thank Lions

Jerri and Bud for hosting the club BBQ. They are so

gracious and accommodating, and we do appreciate

them welcoming us into their home. ~ Mike E. remind-

ed us of another 9/11 event – the Battle of Brandywine

242 years ago, where his great-grandfather Col. Isaac

Taylor was a participant.

Board Meeting Report:

Lion Secretary Wendy P. gave a report on the long but

productive Board meeting held just prior to this meet-

ing. ~ We are still providing funds for the Sunday

evening meals every three months

at the Juvenile Facility. ~ Lion

Tom P. suggested encouraging

people attending the club dinners

to bring used eyeglasses. For each

pair of glasses donated, persons

would receive a ticket, which

could then be raffled off for, per-

haps, a free (donated) meal some-

where. ~ For their help cleaning

up the Lions Park, the club has

donated $200 to Boy Scout Troop

562. ~ Only 68 people participated in the Glenn Bass

Run last year, and fewer have registered for this year.

Fewer businesses are donating funds for this activity.

Discussion was held on perhaps discontinuing this ac-

tivity in the future. ~ Lion Wendy P. mentioned she

was able to purchase other sheets of raffle tickets in

smaller denominations for the banquet raffles. ~ Lion

John M. will check into prices for bibs for the Lobster

Dinner. ~ We no longer sell candy as a fundraiser, and

will sell the mints we have and discontinue that pro-

gram. ~ The club will begin meeting at the Chicken

Ranch Bingo Hall beginning October 2nd. ~ Lion Diann

Kaiser’s Celebration of Life will be held at the Best

Western Hotel Conference Center on Oct 5th. RSVP to

the family if you plan to attend, and if you go, please

wear your yellow Lions vest. ~ Up Country 88’s Lions

Omelet Dinner fundraiser is at 5PM on Oct 6th , at the

American Legion Hall in Jackson. ~ Sign up to help

direct cars on Oct 12th and 19th at the Indigeny Re-

serves Fall Festival Days.

Health Fair:

Lion Dr. Doug F. spoke to the club about helping him

do glaucoma eye testing at the Health Fair on the 15th

and 16th of October. Three or four persons are needed

for two shifts each day, and sign up sheets were passed

around. Shifts are from 7AM to 10 AM, or 10AM to

1PM each day. This important eye testing is a wonder-

ful free service for persons in our community. Every

was amazed when Lion John M. introduced himself,

remembering him from when he was a teacher in Tu-

olumne.

Marble Draw:

Lion Kenny A. had the chance to win today, but then

pulled out a white marble – sorry……

PP Lion Kenny Ayres receives a Centennial Pin in recognition of our club’s increase in membership during his term as president last year. Lion Jerry paying rapt

attention to the very

Lion Chris L. for arriving late to the meeting.

Birthdays/Anniversaries:

Lions Judy Meeks and Dan Ward have Birthdays this

week, and received an euphonious rendition of the

birthday song. Lion Frank M. and his wife Naomi will

celebrate their 66th Anniversary tomorrow – “It’s been

one heck of a roller coaster ride!”

Announcements:

Lion Pres Jerri reminded everyone that next week’s

meeting will be the last one at the Brooks Ranch. (Two

of our alert members happened to go out to the Bingo

Hall this morning, thinking we would be meeting there

today------). They did say they were impressed by the

facility. ~ Lion Pres Jerri mentioned that October 9th is

Green Bag Day – remember to check outdates on food

you are donating. ~ The Lobster Dinner sign up sheet

was passed around. ~ Lion John M. gave some prices

for bibs for the dinner, and will be ordering them. ~

The sign up sheet for the Health Fair was also passed

around. ~ PDG Tom reported on a visit to Tenaya Ele-

mentary School for the Read To Succeed program, and

the principal is also interested in setting up a Pull Tab

collection program, as well as eye screening and Flag

Day.

Happy/Sad Bucks:

Lion John M. mentioned how wonderful the Glenn

Bass Race was last Saturday, and having the Rotary

timing system sure made everything go so easily. ~ Li-

on Wendy P. was happy about last night’s Giants game

– 15 innings, but we won! ~ Visitor Lion Debbi Hop-

man was happy about her grandson’s birthday party on

Saturday, and that she had back surgery last Friday and

is feeling better. ~ Visitor Lion Angela Barth is glad

she is here, and that she will be dropping her daughter

Sara off at college next week. ~ Lion Pres Jerri said she

is wearing red today in honor of her mother, who died

19 years ago today. Red was her mother’s favorite col-

or. ~ Lion Glenn and his wife celebrated their 54th An-

niversary on September 4th. ~ Lion Stacey R. paid a

dollar into the kitty for not wearing her name tag today.

~ Lion Kenny A. apologized for not being at the race

on Saturday, but he was home ill. ~ Lion Ray B. had a

lovely time at his youngest grandson’s wedding on Sat-

urday, and also missed being at the race. ~ Lion Shar-

lene W-R. is happy she got a new car.

Raffle winners:

Our guest speaker Lion Debbi drew the winning tick-

ets of Lions Ken H. and Bud R. (who has been very

lucky lately). The sunglass wearing Critter was won by

Lion Ray B.

Sept 18 The meeting was opened in regular form by Lion Presi-

dent Jerri Regelin, wearing a bright, beautiful red dress

and hat. Guests introduced included Raymond Stahl, a

friend of Lion Glenn G. They have known each other

for over 55 years, through their work in the Forest Ser-

vice. Also introduced were Lions Debbi Hopman and

Angela Barth, from the Tracy Tank Town Lions Club,

and Angela’s daughter Sara Barth. They were all im-

pressed by our harmonious rendition of The Welcome

Song.

Secret Lion:

Secret Lion for today was Sherri P-B, who said only

Lions Tim A. and Walt B. neglected to shake her hand.

year some persons are found to possibly have glauco-

ma, and are encouraged to follow up with their eye

doctor.

Lion Dr. Doug also informed the club members that he

was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, but

that he will still be participating, with members of his

staff, in the upcoming Glenn Bass Run. He, his wife,

and office staff members have been strong supporters

of this Run since it’s beginning. All Lions Club mem-

bers wish him well as he begins this new challenge.

Marble Draw:

It was good to see Lion Lynda L. at the meeting today,

and we were glad she had the chance to pull out the

Black Marble, but…….. she was unsuccessful.

Next Board of Directors Meeting Chicken Ranch Bingo Hall

Wednesday, Sept. 9th @ 10 am

YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO

ATTEND

Hello Fellow Lions I still need help getting speakers for the club for Janu-

ary 2020, May 2020, and June 2020. It doesn't take a

lot of work or effort in getting someone to speak at the

club, but we do need someone to do it. Please consider

signing on for one of those months. If you have trouble

finding someone to come, just ask for help. There are

many simple ways to find great topics/speakers. When

you do take on a month, please let me know who you

have lined up for which date and what they will be

speaking on or what group they represent so I can post

it on our webpage and our Facebook page. Remember

when you are booking someone, we don't have speakers

on the 2nd Wednesday of the month due to it being a

business meeting (following the board of directors'

meeting). In June, there may possibly be another

Wednesday devoted to officer installation, so please

check with President Jerri and/or 1st VP Phil Baylis if

they have any special arrangements. It would be awe-

some to have these 3 final slots filled finally.

Secretary, Wendy Penhallegon

Program:

Lion Debbi Hopman gave a presentation on the Lion’s

Peace Poster/Essay Contest. This world wide program

is for children ages 11,12, and 13, and gives children

everywhere the chance to express their visions of peace.

The Grand Prize winner last year was 13 year old Yi-

Chih Lin from Taipei, Korea. In many schools the arts

have been absorbed into other classes, such as English

or Social Studies, and it is often difficult to find student

groups to participate in this contest. The theme this year

is “Journey Thru Peace”. Posters from Clubs this year

are due Nov 2nd to the District Governor and they will

be judged at that day’s District meeting. The winner

proceeds to Multiple District judging, and then to Inter-

national. Go to Lions International on your computer

and look at the fantastic, beautiful, insightful winning

posters – they are amazing! The Essay Contest is re-

stricted to visually impaired children of the same age,

and is limited to 500 words or less. If you are interested

in being the Chairman for this contest, talk to Lion Pres

Jerri.

Marble Draw:

The amount of money in the pot is becoming serious -

$233.50 today. Lion Ray B. had a chance to pull out

the Black Marble, but was unsuccessful.

card and $100 cash (plus one silver dollar), thanking

them for the great service they have given us during the

time we have been meeting at Brooks Ranch.

Program:

Gat Slor held an interesting discussion on identity theft,

including financial, criminal, and medical identity theft.

Seniors are a number one target, but anyone can be

chosen by the criminals who need just some of one’s

personal information. She related some sad but true sto-

ries of persons whose identities had been hacked. She

suggests joining a company to protect your ID by mon-

Sept 25 The meeting was opened in regular form by Lion Presi-

dent Jerri Regelin, who introduced our guest speaker

for today, Gat Slor, from LegalShield.

Lion Irene W. had $5 ready to pay her fine when she

arrived late for the meeting. (She had first driven to the

Chicken Ranch Bingo Hall thinking our meeting was

there.) Lions “Crazy Bill” Simpson and Joanne and

Bob Presson were also late, and were fined by Tail

Twister Irene as soon as they had sat down. Since this

is the last meeting at Brooks Ranch Restaurant, a bas-

ket was passed to collect donations for tips for our

servers.

Secret Lion Bob B. was able to collect from Lions

Sherry P-B., Joanne and Bob P., and Jim G. for not

greeting him properly with a handshake.

Birthdays/Anniversaries:

Lion “Crazy Bill” will have a Birthday on Saturday,

and received a “crazy” rendition of the birthday song.

Lion Paul Berg and his wife Maribell will celebrate

their anniversary on the 29th.

Announcements:

Lion Pres Jerri announced that the Flemings will not

be hosting the Club Christmas party this year, so we

will need a committee to decide what the club will do.

Lions Jill S., Donna E., and Wendy P. volunteered to

be on the committee, and then VP Jill invited the club

to have the party at her home this year. Thanks, thanks,

thanks! ~ Lion Frank M. explained that the first draw-

ing for the MOW Pet club will be on Oct 16th at our

regular meeting, and you do not have to be present to

win. Lion members who do not regularly attend meet-

ings are especially encouraged to participate in this

fundraiser. ~ The Lobster Dinner is rapidly approach-

ing, and we need more raffle prizes. Grab a bottle or

two of wine and give them to Lion Judy M. and she

will wrap them up. ~ Lion John M. has sold over $1000

in tickets thru his phone calls, and encouraged mem-

bers to give him the names and numbers of persons

they have sold tickets to, so he is not duplicating their

efforts. ~ Lion Phil B. reported that he and “Crazy Bill”

S. cannot repair one of the tables at the Lions Park, but

then Lion Pres Jerri said she will donate a picnic table

she has at her house to replace the broken one. Mucho

thanks!!

Happy/Sad Bucks:

Lion John M. has enjoyed his move back here, and

continues to meet former students, and their children. ~

Lion Phil B. had a lovely date with a boxer pup yester-

day. ~ Lion Joanne P. said her father always told her

she had to behave herself around people, because you

will always run into those same people in the future. ~

Lion Jim G. spent a wonderful week in upstate New

itoring your information, and that can restore your

identity if the worst happens.

Marble Draw:

It took Lion Bob Presson a

while to see that he had the

winning ticket for the Marble

Draw, since “I can’t read that

small print anymore”. Try as

he could, he couldn’t find the

Black Marble and win the

cash.

About Glenn Bass: Glenn Bass retired the summer of 2016

as Cross Country coach after 18 years of

running the track team and the Cross

Country team at Sonora High School. In

1954 he ran track while a student at So-

nora High. Bass is part of a long list of

Wildcats who have come back and

coached at their Alma Mater.

He has given so much to the kids on the

team and has had some of the best run-

ners in the state.

In 2012, I had noticed two things. One:

other organizations ran fund raisers by supporting long distant

runs. In highly populated areas these runs are huge and raise a

good amount of money.

Two: Sonora High had some very good runners but cross country

not being a great spectator sport received minimal funds. The run-

ners had hand me down uniforms and equipment. So Tom Pen-

hallegon, who was new to our Lions club and I met with Coach

Glenn Bass. That same summer the Sonora Lions sponsored the

first run called the Pride Stride (after a pride of lions). Due to our

close relationship with Coach Bass we saw first hand how he gave

so much personal time and when needed funds out of his own

pocket.

Friends of Pets Project At the August 14th Board Meeting a new

project was approved that enables all

members to participate. Along with the Meals on

Wheels delivery, drivers also take treats, dog, and cat

food to help supplement the client’s pets needs. The

Sonora Lions Club will now be purchasing the food for

the pets thru this program. Each month the MOW re-

port will list members who donate to this project under

the name “MOW Friends of Pets”

A $5 donation will get one month’s recognition in the

Bulletin and one chance for a drawing.

A $10 donation will get three month’s recognition in

the Bulletin and three chances for a drawing.

A $20 donation will get six month’s recognition in the

Bulletin and six chances for a drawing.

The value of the drawing will be based on a percentage

received from the total amount of donations each

month.

Our first drawing will be on October 16 at our Lions

Club meeting. You don’t have to be present to win.

There are some members in our club who cannot attend

all meetings. This is a way for them to be a part of a

project and be recognized for their participation.

Please send checks made out to Sonora Lions Club, PO

Box 101, Standard, CA 95373. “MOW Friends of

About Newt

McKenna: Annually the Sonora Lions Club

hosts the Newt McKenna Lob-

ster Dinner. It is a major fund

raiser for our club and the enthu-

siasm within the club and the

community begs the question

from those of us who are new to

the club and community is,

“Who is Newt McKenna?”

His bio states he was born in San

Francisco in 1917. He lived much of his life in San Francisco and

was a successful businessman with a degree in business admin-

istration from California State University in Hayward. He and his

wife built a home in Twain Harte and moved there when he re-

tired in 1981. He was active in the Sonora Lions Club and Sirs in

Retirement.

As a Lion he served as club president and bulletin editor and was

awarded Lion of the Year twice, once in 1989 and again in 1993.

He also was named a Melvin Jones Fellow in 2002.

He was also was instrumental in setting up the early lobster din-

ners. They became one of our major fund raising activities and at

some point was named in his honor. He, like many Lions who

were active before him and those after are the reason Lionism has

flourished here in Tuolumne county and around the world. We

thank him for his efforts and hope the Lobster Dinner named for

him continues for many years.
