What is Diagnostic Medical Sonography?

• It is the art and science of producing medical images using sound waves

• A Sonographer produces images that a radiologist interprets to aid in diagnosing a patient

• Ultrasound can be used on every part of the body—not just for babies!

• Ultrasound has replaced xrays as the way to image a baby in the uterus!

Role of the Sonographer• Prepare the exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct examinations and assist

radiologists as needed with ultrasound-guided biopsies and vascular ultrasound procedures

• Recognize and record the appropriate anatomy and pathology using sonographic equipment

• Care properly for sonography equipment and report equipment failure

• Write reports based upon the scan results and completion

• Alert appropriate medical staff of any abnormalities that need immediate attention

• Use the ability to solve problems and make decisions

• Work independently or with minimal supervision and as part of a team

• Manage multiple priorities and projects, and display flexibility in a fast-paced work environment

• Display good work ethic and friendly and cheerful disposition

• Maintain the strictest levels of confidentiality

• Pursue professional development for the continual improvement of patient care

Role of the Sonographer –Cont’d• Sonographers participate in a variety of scenarios beyond

imaging by being involved in or assisting with:

• Miscarriages, Fetal Abnormalities, Fetal Demise, Pregnancy Termination

• Cancer diagnoses, palliative procedures• Assisting ill patients with toileting, vomiting or their IVs• Imaging critically ill patients in the various ICUs• Interventional Procedures:

• Various biopsies—ie) Liver, Kidney, Thyroid, Prostate etc.• Drainages—removing fluid from around the lungs or the abdomen by

inserting a tube through the skin• Abscess drainages—removing frank pus from wounds• Joint injections, contrast injections• Pericardial (around the heart) drainages• Assisting with transesophageal imaging of the heart (placing a long

ultrasound probe down the throat)

Role of the Sonographer –Pediatric Imaging

Role of the Sonographer – ICU Exams

The Sonography Program at Camosun College

The Sonography Program• Intense 24 months of study (no summer breaks!) • 4 month long terms; 6 terms in total• Classroom with labs (including simulation)

alternating with clinical semesters with online courses

• In addition to using simulators, students act as surrogate patients to learn positioning techniques as well as interpersonal skills

• Classes run 5 days/week, often from 0830 –1730 hrs

About Electives Requirements:NOTE: Elective courses cannot be calculated in total costs.

Sonographers are at high risk for workplace injury due to long hours of performing repetitive tasks and the demanding physical nature of scanning.

Program Leaders confirm if the electives chosen will help the student achieve the program outcome of “effective functioning of self”.

Electives should help students integrate knowledge of health, nutrition, and personal wellness supports long-term physical functioning in the workplace while enhancing potential personal and professional success.

You may choose to complete these electives during any term of the program and may use equivalent transfer credits to satisfy this requirement.

Six credits of Electives are REQUIRED for program completion.

Clinical Experience

• Clinical placements will be at a variety of sites on Vancouver Island

• Students participate in one of three different clinical experiences, depending on placement availability

• Cardiac• General/OB• Vascular

• There is no guarantee that students will receive their preferred placements

• Students are responsible for providing their own transportation and accommodations while on their clinical placement; keep these costs in mind

Advanced Certificate, post-Diploma

• Allows for students who have successfully completed their program to add more clinical competencies and qualify to write another specialty exam—ie) Completed General Sonography in the program and now can add Cardiac or Vascular

• The Clinical Placements for the CE certificate can be up to 16 weeks in length, but can be shorter provided the student demonstrates proficiency and competency

• Allows students to add a semester to acquire the additional credential—beneficial for those who may not have had had access to their preferred credential during the program or for those who want to have multiple credentials

Accreditation

Existing programs at Camosun College are in a Re-Accreditation Cycle, with our current six year cycle completing at the end of July in 2020.

Sonography will submit an application for accreditation prior to the beginning of the program and upon acceptance of our application will be a registered program. Students in the first cohort will participate in accreditation activities during both years of the program.

The College is confident that we will meet all requirements for students to be eligible for their national certification examination.

• Qualified students are ranked. • Fifty percent of each students’ rank comes from their GPA

of the admission requirements only, no other grades are used in the calculation.

• Fifty percent of each students’ rank comes from their non-academic assessment.

• There is no interview process and no resume/cover letter required

• Up to 16 of the top ranked students receive an invitation to the program.**you will be asked for a $175.00 deposit to hold a seat; the deposit goes towards your first semester tuition but is non-refundable if you change your mind.

Admission Process Overview• The program maintains a short waitlist for late entry

into the same year due to student withdrawals or deferrals. Waitlists are not retained for future years.

Admission RequirementsAfter all applicants have completed the non-academic assessment:• An aggregate score for each applicant is calculated

by equally weighting the academic (combined GPA of admission requirements) and non-academic assessment scores (indicators of program and future professional success) to determine which applicants will receive program seat invitations.

• Once all aggregated scores are totaled, the students selected will be offered seats in the program for a given year, pending completion of the Program Participation Requirements prior to the program start date.

• There is NO interview

Non-Academic AssessmentCASPer Test

• The program maintains a short waitlist for late entry into the same year due to student withdrawals or deferrals.

• Those applicants meeting the admission requirements, but not gaining a seat in the year of application need to reapply in order to be eligible in a subsequent year.

• Waitlists are not retained for future years.

Program Waitlist

Program Participation RequirementsDO NOT begin these before being offered a seat!

• Students must accept assigned clinical site placements, subject to availability and capacity.

• Students will be required to do a Criminal Record Check (CRC). Camosun will provide details prior to clinical work starting. Previous CRCs will not be accepted for this purpose.

• Students must provide their own transportation, meals, and accommodations while completing their clinical placement(s).

• Students must have yearly respirator mask ‘fit-testing’ done. Students will be responsible for completing this process prior to the first clinical experience and for any associated costs.

• Students must have completed and be current in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C prior to practicum. Annual recertification of CPR Level C must be maintained throughout the program. Students will be responsible for the cost of this certification.

Program Participation Requirements, cont.

• Students must provide evidence that they do not have active TB.

• Acceptable evidence is a negative TB skin test or a negative chest x-ray.

• Evidence must be dated no more than six months before clinical exposure starts.

• Students are responsible for the cost of testing. • An additional TB test is required after each possible

exposure to TB and/or travel within an area that there is a known prevalence of TB.

• Previously having had TB or a previous positive skin test do not automatically exclude a student from participation.

Program Participation Requirements, cont.• Students must provide evidence of their immunizations or

immunity to preventable, communicable diseases. • Students are highly recommended to maintain current

immunizations as per the Practice Education Guidelines of B.C. Recommended immunizations are found on the Health Sciences Placement Network of Canada website by searching for immunization guidelines.

• Failure to comply with immunization guidelines could result in the health care organization or the College barring the individual from the clinical/practicum setting until proof of immunity is provided and/or until a communicable disease outbreak is declared over. This could impact a student’s ability to successfully complete the clinical/practicum placement and/or a clinical/community rotation.

• BC tuition increase is limited to 2%/year since 2005

• ABE free• Government Student

loans now interest free in BC (students sill must pay federal loan interest)

What are we doing about it?

• About 60% of the cost of education is covered by Tuition & Student Fees

• College operations• Instructor salaries• Classroom supplies• Lab equipment• Insurance & benefits• Maintenance• Amenities

• Government directly funds about 40% of the cost of theory education through subsidies & college budget

• Student education at clinical is funded by MoH& MoAEST at the provincial level, not in the workplace

• Student Financial Aid

Where does the money come from?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Spend a few minutes talking about this. The college does not transfer money to the clinical sites, those organizations (at the very top) receive funding and accommodations through the total number of student practicum hours that happen (tracked through HSPnet) and then assign learning supports within various departments and facilities based on union contracts, certification guidelines, best practices, and registry requirements. If you want this to change, you have to become politically active in the organizations that control the status quo… and it isn’t Camosun! Where does the money come from?
