Procedure:

Pre-listening

• Ask students what comes to their minds when they hear the word CHRISTMAS. Accept their ideas in Portuguese. You can recast and teach some vocabulary at this point.

• Ask students if they know any songs in English related to Christmas.

• Set the mood for the song talking about the possibility of getting non-material presents and what they would be (love, family together, friends, health).

• Listen to the song for the first time with the lyrics and let them get familiar with it.

• Listen to it a second time, but stop after each line, checking students general understanding.

• As the lyrics are quite long, divide the class into groups. Each group will sing a part of the song and everybody sings the chorus. Work with the groups individually so they understand their part. Encourage them to mime their lines. Set a time limit for them to do so.

• Hand out the copies of the worksheets.

• Check if students understand what they have to do.

• Ask students to do the exercises and help them if necessary.

• Correct the exercises on the board.

Wrap up activity

• Allow some time for the groups to rehearse their parts again.

• When all the groups have finished rehearsing, have a big presentation along with the video.
