“[…] listeners use a processing apparatus specifically tuned to theirmaternal language. Consequently, they have a lot of difficulty indealing with sound structures that are alien to the language theyheard as infants. They display what we call phonological ‘deafnesses’;that is, they have troubles discriminating phonological contrasts thatare not used in their native language.
