JORGEJ PEREZ’S FAREWELL-TO-CUBA
‘More than a photographer, I am a robber of memoriesand stories that I try to capture in every image. Throughmy pictures, I reveal my phantoms, my longings, my lovesand hates, my sorrows and joys. All mixed with bits of mypersonality, because in each photograph there is somefeature of my own history… before immigrating to thisnew city and new life, I said goodbye to each piece of life Iwas leaving behind on our island. Because in thesepictures there remain the memories, the motherlyembrace, a poetic sunset seen from the Malecón, an oldsong or the odd kiss stolen from a past sweetheart.’ JorgeJ. Pérez

He titles his blog, Pixamundo – travelsfrom around the globe, which has superb images fromcity to countryside to beach, East, and West. We aredelighted that Cuba is at the top of Rafael’s list of placesto visit. He considers that ‘the people, architecture, andcolors are a photographers delight. Plus the sounds, scents and energy of the island continue to draw meback.’

Callejón de Hamel & the beat of the conga drums
By Victoria Alcalá
Although Calle Hamel is really just an extension of Calle animas, between Aramburu and Espada it is known as Callejón de Hamel for the fascinating arts and dance project created by Salvador Gonzales Escalona in this run down Cayo Hueso neighborhood. Salvador has painted large bright Afro-Cuban murals on the walls of Calle Hamel, combining a mixture of abstract and surrealist design with phrases
giving advice and warnings about danger, death and life. Salvador describes it as a community based project, ‘from el barrio, to el barrio and with el barrio.’ Although this now attracts many tourists the events held here, and especially the rumba is still worth visiting. There is a small bar in the street, which sells a strong drink of rum and honey, CUC 2 and a stall, which sells herbs, representing spiritual and curative roles within Santeria.

Blue/Orange by La Peña Meisner de laHabanaBlue/Orange is a multi-award winning play written byBritish dramatist Joe Penhall, and first performed at the Royal National Theatre in 2000. The play is set in a Britishpsychiatric hospital. Christopher, a young Black manfrom a poorer district, has been diagnosed withBorderline Personality Disorder following a psychoticepisode. After 28 days in the care of young registrar, Dr.Bruce Flaherty, Chris is due to be released. But Brucefears that his patient's belief that his father is Idi Amin, and the fact that he insists that oranges are blue, arewarning signs of schizophrenia. If Chris is released intothe community he could well suffer a terrible breakdown.A power struggle ensues…
Blue/Orange is not so much about mental illness –although that is its framework – as it is about power. Andego. And racial prejudice. As the two psychiatrists - oneyoung and scrupulous, the other older, set on his ownagenda, and utterly ruthless -- square off, the patientbecomes the battleground. It’s a wonderful chess gameof sorts.
La Peña Meisner de la HabanaLa Peña Meisner de la Habana is an unofficial groupconsisting of actors and directors who have studiedpreviously with Stephen Bayly at the EscuelaInternacional de Cine in San Antonio de los Baños. It wasformed in January 2012 and is dedicated to creatingrealistic performances in film and theatre. In the Springof 2012 the group mounted its debut production, LasTumbas Olvidadas, an adaptation of Edgar Lee Master’sSpoon River Anthology, as part of La Semana Británica. In addition to the British Embassy, the group receivedsupport from the Escuela Internacional de Cine yTelevlsion, and the Cuban Council of the Arts. The workwas very favorably received, and commended for itsrefreshingly direct and truthful performances.
The PresentationThe work – a three-hander - has been translated byCuban scriptwriter Julio Carrillo, and will be presentedwith two casts – one all-male and one all-female – playingalternate nights. Top Cuban stage and film designerAlain Ortiz will create the set and costumes. The playersare, of course, all Cuban, a mix of up-and-coming andwell-known actors:

Blue/Orange will be mounted at the Teatro BertoldBrecht from 6 June 2013 for one month, as a presentationof Teatro del Publico. The intention of La Peña is to tour the production both nationally and internationally.
The 100x100 ClubLa Peña, as an unofficial group, needs to raise funds inorder to mount its productions. In the case ofBlue/Orange, we have support from the British andNorwegian Embassies, the EICTV, the Escencia Group, and several UK private patrons – representing about50% of the production budget.
Several Habaneros business people and arts patronshave decided to get behind the production and haveformed a sponsorship group, the 100x100 Club, with theidea of asking for donations of 100cuc as a form ofpatronage. 63rd ERNEST HEMINGWAYInternational Billfishing Tournament
Like all the best fishing stories, mine began in a bar…By Stephen Gibbs
One evening in Havana, I was introduced to a man called Stewart, an affable commercial manager in a London building firm. It turned out he was part of the English team in this year’s Hemingway fishing tournament. In fact, he was the only Englishman on his boat, and he was taking on recruits. Two days later, we were a mile off the Havana coast, hoping to strike lucky in what I was told was the oldest big—game fishing competition in the world.
The Torneo Hemingway is one of those remnants of pre—revolution Cuba that just won’t die. Maybe that is not entirely unconnected to the fact that Fidel Castro himself is a previous winner. There is a photograph of Ernest Hemingway handing him the trophy in 1960. It was the only time the two men ever met.
Since then, the event has had its ups and downs. By the mid—sixties, when almost all the Cuban
May 20-25, 2013(Based from Marina Hemingway Marina, Playa, Havana)
bourgeoisie (as they were being described by then) had left the island, only a few locals were taking part. Then, in the late seventies, Jimmy Carter instigated a détente with Cuba, and a huge flotilla of fishermen came over from America. The 1980 tournament was cancelled, as that summer the waters were filled not with marlin, but with thousands of Cuban rafters heading for Florida.
These days, with the Bush administration threatening heavy fines on American vessels that visit Cuba, very few take the risk. And all Cuban citizens now need special government permission to set foot on a boat, which does not help matters.
But the tournament goes on. This year there were fifteen boats competing. One was full of gregarious Frenchmen. Another with distinctly organised—looking Czechs. And then there were

the Russians, all with RUSSIA written in large red letters on their T shirts. I had been told that one of the crews had sneaked an American citizen on board. Was he disguised as a Russian, I wondered?
To be honest, we all looked a slightly motley bunch. Think big—game fishing and you might imagine huge, gleaming boats with names like “Wet Dream,” and immaculately turned out crews. But when the Americans don’t show up, it’s not the same. Most of the boats were hired in Cuba. They were simple, functional vessels. The only opulence was the setting.
Tantalisingly close to the coast of Havana is what Hemingway called the “great blue river.” It is where the Gulf Stream brushes past the island, and the sea floor plunges to a depth of nearly 6,000 feet (almost 2,000m). Cruising in the warm current at this time of year are hundreds of the Rolls—Royces of fish: the blue marlin. Behind our boat we tried to tempt them with squid—like lures, in garish colours.
The hours passed by. I began to wonder what was the point. Stewart tried to explain. “It’s a hunter—gatherer thing,” he said, as he sipped a beer, and eased his large frame into a more comfortable position.
These days, the idea of tournament game fishing is in fact less hunter—gathering than tag—and—releasing. No longer do the winners have their photo taken next to their towering, bleeding catch. Instead they bring the live fish alongside the boat, attach a marker to it, and let it go.
By midday we had caught nothing. Our conversation, and the boat, drifted along. Stewart was just explaining the ins and outs of London property development when we were reminded that underneath us, something even more cutthroat was going on.
One of our bright orange lures burst out of the water. Behind it, I caught a glimpse of the grey
fin of a massive blue marlin. Marlin are notoriously aggressive fish. They don’t bite their prey. They attack it. The reel beside me started spinning. Stewart grabbed it and began to wind it in.
But the fish got away. That happened two more times before the day was over. Back at the marina, the Czechs were already celebrating their win—they had tagged four marlin. The consolation prize was a ticket to the gala dinner that night. There, I found myself talking to the man who was the captain of Fidel Castro’s boat in 1960. Maybe it was the sea air, or old age, but Julio had none of the timidity you so often find in Cubans when you raise the F—word in conversation.
“Fidel knew nothing about fishing,” he said. “But I was a good teacher, and he listened.”
Julio, it turned out, had coached more than a few revolutionaries in this exclusive sport. Che Guevara, for one, whom he described as “a bad fisherman.” In Cuba, where Che has been elevated to something close to a god, that sounds almost blasphemous. I asked him which country he thought produced the best anglers in the world. Without hesitation, he pointed north towards Florida.
Cuban fishermen seem to miss the competition, and the money their American visitors once provided. If ever the two countries settle their differences, the first to return will be the men in boats. The sea which divides these two unhappy neighbors might yet bring them closer together.

International Workers' DayMay 1 at Plaza de la Revolución, Havana, Cuba
Hundreds of thousands of Cubans filed through Havana's Revolution Square on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 in a May Day parade that paid tribute to Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan leader…A sea of workers, many wearing red shirts like those favored by Chavez and carrying signs with his image, paraded past a giant statue of 19th century Cuban independence hero Jose Marti in the vast square where Cuba holds its biggest political rallies.
This was actually somewhat lower key than during many years’ past when upwards of a million people would gather to listen to one of Fidel Castro’s invariably long speeches. Whatever your politics this is a chance to experience and feel the atmosphere and energy which remains in the Cuban revolution and to get an insight into Cuba today. You should remember that it starts and finish early (typically you should aim to get there for 8am), so put your walking shoes on, a hat for the drenching sun and Vamos a la Plaza!
History and background to May Day May Day, or Worker’s Day, is celebrated in honor of the Martyrs of Chicago, seven company employees in the US who were killed in 1886 for going on a strike demanding an eight-hour workday. During the Congress of the Second International held in Paris in 1889 with representatives of workers from several European countries, the French delegation presented the initiative of preserving the memory of the Chicago martyrs through public demonstrations for better working conditions.
One year later, the first May Day was celebrated in different parts of the world, including Cuba. Until 1959, the May Day demonstrations were held to denounce the exploitation of workers in the country. With the triumph of the Revolution on January 1, 1959, May Day became a holiday of the working class who every May 1 fill Plaza de la Revolución joined by students, agricultural workers and the armed forces in support of the Revolution.

Romerías de MayoMay 3-8 / City of Holguín
According to the Spanish custom of placing a cross at the highest point of a town or village in order to prevent epidemics or natural disasters, on May 3, 1790, the Franciscan friar Antonio de Alegría placed a cross on the hill that marks the geographic north of the city of Holguin. The people of Holguín would make pilgrimages each year to the Wooden Cross and this led to May 3 being declared a holiday for the city since 1945. It was not until 1994, however, that through an initiative of the Hermanos Saíz Association of young artists that this pilgrimage became what it is today, a week-long festival of every manifestation of the arts. The Romerías begin precisely with a pilgrimage to the Wooden Cross carrying the Taino Axe with them. The festival is presided by both the axe and the cross, symbols of the mixture of elements that constitute Cuban culture.
As every year, the city of Holguin is getting ready to receive hundreds of creators from every manifestation of the arts. In its 20th edition, 200 artists from 25 countries have confirmed their participation, as well as a similar number of Cuban artists, such as David Blanco, X Alfonso, Moneda Dura, Obsesión (who will launch their album Disco negro, prizewinner at Cubadisco 2012), Causa Justa (with their album Kminos, also a prizewinner at Cubadisco 2012 and the Cuerda Viva Festival), Onda Livre, Las Positivas, Buena Fe, DJs Iván Lejardi and Eddy GT, Danza Teatro Retazos, Danza Abierta, Ballet Lizt Alfonso and Mirón Cubano Theatre Company, just to name a few. The popular celebration, which links tradition and modernity, will be characterized, as always, by its broad spectrum, bringing together writers, singers, rockers, rappers, folk groups, visual artists, actors and dancers who join Holguineros in a marathon-like program in various parts of the city

Cayo LargoAn absolute beach paradise
If you are looking for paradise, you will not go far wrong in Cayo Largo. Slung 177 kilometers south of the underbelly of Havana province, Cayo Largo is the largest and easternmost of the numerous coral cays that comprise the Archipiélago de los Canarreos. This boomerang-shaped, low-lying sliver of land boasts some of the most gorgeous beaches in Cuba. The sugar white sands extend along almost 20 kilometers of shoreline. They dissolve into gin-clear turquoise ocean waters where the snorkeling and diving are simply superb and the beaches go on forever including the world class Playa Sirena. Thanks to Robert Majo for his superb pictures provided below.
Most vacationers here fly in from Europe or Canada for a week or so of relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, boozing, and not doing much of anything else. You're a captive audience, given the distance from the mainland and the relative paucity of things to see and do. Other visitors fly in for one- or two-night excursions from Havana or Varadero.
The main drawback here: No Cubans are allowed and other than the hotel workers,
billeted far away from the hotels, you'll leave with virtually no sense of the country itself. And most of the few services here (a bank, medical clinic, and disco) are five kilometers away in the workers and administrative village: El Pueblo. Choose your hotel carefully. There are only six to pick from. They vary markedly, from the unexciting Hotel Club Cayo Largo to the attractive four-star Sol Cayo Largo, plus there's a fishing lodge (Villa Marinera) nestled up to mangrove-lined shallows. All the hotels are run on an all-inclusive basis and concentrate along Playa Paraíso, where high surf occasionally makes enjoying the watersports all but impossible.
An excursion shuttle ferries visitors to and from Playas Sirena and Paraíso, twin stunning swathes of white sand that have a beach grill and watersports. And sailboat excursions take you to nearby uninhabited cays sprinkled like diamonds across the sapphire sea, including Cayo Iguana, named for the large population of endemic giant lizards appearing as baked and lifeless as the ground they walk on.

El Cocinero opened in February 2013 and has instantly become a smash hit. Located underneath the imposing brick chimney of the same name (which used to be a vegetable oil factory), this bar/restaurant is reached via 3 flights of circular stairs, which go up vertiginously lighthouse style. It is worth the effort to reach the sunken roof, which has ample space for drinks and food. MILANO LOUNGE CLUBAve 3ra No 2404 E 24 y 26, Miramar, Playa, La Habana (53) 7 203 4641 While Milano may be the new kid on the block, opening in mid April, 2013 in Miramar’s burgeoning entertainment district, there was nothing modest about the smart party that announced its arrival loaded with bling-bling. This is a beautifully decorated Miramar mansion, which could have walked in straight from South Beach, Miami. All white lines, minimalist and stylish.
You can eat inside the main house, on the smallish terrace (our choice) or out in the pleasant garden (watch out for chairs sinking into the ground though!). There is a small chill-out space inside although truth be told this is a place for a party, get your DJ and fill out the garden with the glitterati of Havana.

The boom in paladars has continued unabated during the past month with the opening of Milano (seebelow), which must be the swishiest place to date and takes the bling rating up several notches.Overall there does seem to be something of a wall-which has been hit in terms of creativity which hasdefinitely flat-lined. If this heralds a return to core dining principals all good, I simply have the feelingthat sometimes everyone seems to be chasing the same clientele using the same chef…Growing pains…
DOWNS:
Pricey butter or oil for your bread at MilanoMilano opened to a big splash on April 20, 2013. This is an extremely goodlooking place, decorated in white and with a huge window looking out on the front yard that faces 3rd Avenue in Miramar. The food is O.K. butoverpriced and the service is below mediocre. In our last visit we ordered abasket of their delicious homemade olive oil and rosemary bread, but it wasbrought without any oil or butter, so we asked for some. Ten minutes laterwe were presented with two tiny bowls (one with oil and one with butter)and informed that our bread would go up in price from 2 cucs to 5 cucs, because the bread did not come with any spreads. In my humble opinionthat is beyond ridiculous but I am still willing to give them the benefit of thedoubt since they are new and the waiters very obviously lack experience.3rd Ave. # 2404, between 24 and 26, Miramar. The lack of flexibility at some paladaresWho hasn’t ordered a half order of serrano ham? Or a steak with a different side dish? Accommodating ordersto the clients’ desires is a characteristic of many good paladares in the city and of most good restaurants in theworld. Unfortunately there are some establishments that lack that flexibility and refuse to modify the dishes asthey are described in the menu. Two recent examples of this in Havana are El Idilio, which couldn’t serve a halforder of serrano ham and cheese, and El Patio, which couldn’t replace a smoked sausage for a red chorizo in thesausage plate. Both restaurants have good grilled food, they just need to remember the first rule of business:the customer is always right. While we are at this must give a shout out to El Partenon which is always willing togo that extra mile.

The claustrophobic décor at RazonesThis is an unpretentious paladar with a simple, but good menu (grilled fish, grilled pork, garlic shrimp and a few Indian surprises), very friendly staffand reasonable prices. It is casual and a favorite for many Cuban familiesand tourists. Nevertheless there is neither a single window in the place noranything in the décor to relieve the cluttered look and claustrophobicfeeling. Some professional help in interior decoration could help, but it is still a fairly good place food and price-wise. You may want to give it a trywhenever you run out of options.Calle F, # 2, between 2nd and 3rd, Vedado. Tel. 830 6055

UPS:
The appetizers at Star BienWhat a pretty paladar this one is! I was there on a breezy afternoon withfriends for appetizers and drinks. The place is very good looking, the staff ishelpful and friendly and the food is fantastic. I have to acknowledge that wedid not order any entrée, just appetizers, but all of them were great: wetried the blue cheese raviolis, the crab croquettes, the breaded fish sticks, and the cheese balls, among others. Everything was nice. Go and check itout!Calle 29 #205, between C and B. Tel. 830 0711
The open space at El CocineroThis is one of the big “ups” of the last months in Havana. El Cocinero is acool and trendy bar located in Vedado in the building close to the ironbridge with the big chimney. The space is totally open, which may present aproblem during the rainy season, but the owners are planning to openanother dining space in a closed area on the premises. One can have a fullmeal at El Cocinero, but the place is better for tapas and drinks. Don’t missit!Calle 26, S/N, between 11 and 13, Vedado. Tel. 832 2355
Smoked pork at NaOThis paladar has been open for just over a year in Havana Vieja, very close toAvenida del Puerto on Calle Obispo. All the food I’ve eaten here has beengood and so has the service. But one of my favorite dishes at this tiny placeis the smoked pork. I am not particularly crazy about pork, but NaO’sversion has a beautiful and subtle smoked flavor and the pieces are so softthey just melt in your mouth. Try also the Picadillo, the Ropa Vieja and theMalanga Fritters with Honey. Overall, one can say that NaO has a great chefin charge of the kitchen.Obispo #1, corner with Avenida del Puerto. Tel. 05295 8209
Melazane alla Parmigiana at La Corte del PrincipeI previously gave an “up” to this fairly new Italian paladar, located inMiramar, for its fresh pastas. Those pastas continue to be the strong pointof La Corte del Principe where the dishes are prepared daily with freshproducts available in the market. Nevertheless if you choose not to go thepasta route there is a great option -- the Melazane alla Parmigiana(eggplant parmigiana), a delicious thin slice of eggplant fried in batter andcovered in a tomato sauce and parmesan cheese. It is an appetizer but Icould easily have it as an entrée. Remember that in this place you willusually see a changing menu because every day they have only what isfresh.Calle 9 Esq. 74, Playa.
