LIKE MOST PEOPLE, I GREW UP NEVER THINKING ABOUT WHERE MY MEAT CAME FROM. THEN, A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, I BEGAN TO INVESTIGATE THE TREATMENT OF FARMED ANIMALS.
Stepping into a factory farm, is like stepping
into a prison. You’re surrounded by row upon
row of metal bars. But in factory farms, the
victims are the ones who are imprisoned.
The footage a fellow investigator gathered inside
a gas chamber is truly haunting. But I shouldn’t
have been surprised at how these animals died.
Not after I’d seen how they lived…

We’re better than this
I MET SOPHIE IN SA
Sophie was locked in a metal crate so small
she couldn’t even turn. This was her ‘life’
for weeks on end. The pig industry treated
her as a breeding machine. Her depression
was obvious. Her eyes were vacant and she
constantly bit at the bars of her crate in distress.
Pigs like Sophie are friendly and incredibly
smart. They dream when they sleep, they rub
noses with their close friends and they build a
soft nest for their babies.
But Sophie was forced to give birth on a hard
metal floor and watch helplessly as her piglets
had their tails sliced off, and their teeth cut.
HER PIGLETS SCREAMED AS WORKERS CUT THROUGH SENSITIVE NERVES WITHOUT PAIN RELIEF.
Sophie’s piglets were trucked to slaughter
at just 6 months old. When Sophie could no
longer get pregnant, she also breathed her last
breath inside a gas chamber.
I was a cop for 20 years, so I knew that laws
should prevent abuse, not allow it. Yet all of this
was legal and their suffering was hidden from
view. I realised the only way for me to protect
Sophie and pigs like her was to not eat them.

I CLIMBED INSIDE A GAS CHAMBERto witness how most pigs are killed. It felt like my eyes
and nostils were on fire, but unlike me, the pigs didn’t
have a gas mask to protect their throat and lungs.
Pigs thrashed and screamed as they were lowered
in. They call this the ‘most humane’ way to kill pigs.
But no one who has seen what I did could
call it ‘humane’.

When you see a roast chicken in a supermarket
you’re looking at a 6-week-old chick, like Ruby.
Her ‘adult-sized’ body is the result of genetic
selection. In fact, she grew so fast that by one
month she could barely walk. Ruby spent most of
her time sitting on faeces-covered litter. For many
chickens, their final moments in slaughterhouses
are not only terrifying – they’re agonising.
Shackled upside down, they can suffer
dislocated joints as their heavy bodies hang from
weak legs. Their last view of the world is as they
are electrocuted, before their throat is cut.
After seeing how Ryan, Ruby and most other
chickens are treated, I wanted no part of it. My
days of eating chicken and eggs were over.
MEET RYAN
Ryan was a male chick in the egg industry. He
couldn’t lay eggs, so in the eyes of the industry
he was worthless.
Most hens in the egg industry have their beak
cut without pain relief. And each day, they wake
up only to suffer in a tiny metal cage.
SO RYAN WAS TOSSED ALIVE INTO A GIANT GRINDING MACHINE.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, people who ditch meat have:

Reducing or replacing meat with plant-based
foods is one of the best things you can do for
your health. Chances are you’ll have more
energy, feel great and you’ll also help protect
yourself against the biggest killers: heart
disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.
Medical research shows that chicken, fish
and eggs are linked to many health problems.
Chicken, dairy, and eggs are packed with
saturated fat. Recent studies have found that
choosing plant-based foods can cut your risk of
heart disease by as much as 32% and, if you’re
under 65, can reduce your risk of death from
diabetes and cancer by up to 75%. Fish can also
contain some cancer-causing chemicals like
dioxins, arsenic, and mercury.
Factory farms are also breeding grounds for
disease. More than half of all antibiotics are
used on farmed animals – increasing the risk
of antibiotic resistant superbugs.
4 out of 5 portions of raw chicken meat in Australia are contaminated with intestinal bacteria that could
cause food poisoning.

Stay strong
Iron is everywhere
Leafy greens, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts and
seeds, dried fruit, fortified breakfast cereals
and wholemeal bread are great plant sources
of iron. Supplements are also available for
people who need them.
Protein-packed plants
Beans, lentils, nuts, plant-based ‘meats’, tofu,
and whole grains are all great sources of
protein to stay strong.
Eating out Restaurant chains are offering more meat-free meals
than ever before. Subway, Grill’d, Sumo Salad, Nando’s,
Guzman y Gomez and Domino’s Pizza have all added
delicious plant-based options to their menus.
Thai, Indian, Japanese, Mexican and Middle Eastern
restaurants also offer tasty meat-free dishes.
