THE WESTERN DESERT

The Great Indian Desert is also known as the Thar Desert.

It stretches from the Rann of Kachchh in Gujarat through Rajasthan to the

borders of Haryana.

The Thar Desert is covered with a thick sheet of loose sand.

At some places, there are small hills of sand called sand dunes.

The land around an oasis is fertile. People grow crops here.

The Thar Desert remains hot and dry throughout the year.

There is very little or no rainfall.

Mostly scattered bushes and thorny shrubs grow here.

Animals such as camels, blackbucks, chinkaras and Great Indian bustards are

found in this region.

L: 4- ANIMALS: LIVING AND SURVIVING

ADAPTATIONS TO ENVIRONMENT

In the natural world, a plant or an animal adapts

or changes itself to suit its surroundings and this

process of changing to suit the surroundings is

called adaptation. The natural home of an animal

is called its habitat.

Terrestrial animals like horses, lions and camels

live on land. They have legs to move and lungs to

breathe. Animals like polar bears and arctic foxes

live in cold regions and they have fur on their

bodies to keep them warm. Some animals like

lizards and frogs sleep for several months to

protect themselves from the cold and this process

is known as hibernation.

Aquatic animals that live in water like fish,

snails, turtles and crabs have fins or limbs suited

for swimming in water. Fishes and crabs have

gills for breathing. Animals that can live both on

land and in water are called amphibians. Frogs,

toads, salamanders and newts have limbs for

swimming, moist skin to breathe in water and

lungs to breathe on land.

The animals that can fly are called aerial

animals. They have wings to fly. The body of

these animals is boat shaped so that they can

easily cut through the air and also they have light

bones and feathers. Some animals spend most of

their time on trees. They are known as arboreal

animals. Monkeys, tree lizards, flying squirrels

and opossums, all have claws and broad hip

girdles to support their body while climbing.

Refer to LESSON: 4: “ANIMALS: LIVING AND SURVIVING”

PART –ADAPTATIONS TO ENVIRONMENT,

while doing the questions.
