Physical activity provides numerous health benefits such as weight control and lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression. To get the most health bang for your buck, experts have established these physical activity guidelines for adults: thirty minutes of moderate aerobic physical activity five days a week or twenty minutes of vigorous aerobic physical activity three days a week. These are minimal guidelines—you can add additional workout days or longer workout sessions if you want to increase your health benefits, lose weight or are training for an athletic event. But what is aerobic physical activity, and why is it important? Aerobic physical activity improves your heart’s efficiency while resting and during exercise. It is continuous movement that uses the large muscle groups of your arms and legs. During aerobic physical activity, your heart rate increases and you may begin to breathe hard. Walking, running, swimming and biking are great examples of aerobic activity, and they all double as types of transportation! For information about the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans visit: www.Health.gov/PAGuidelines

Week Two:
Getting Benefits
Aerobic physical activity provides numerous health benefits. But a
well- rounded exercise routine also includes muscle-strengthening
and flexibility activities. Increased bone strength, muscular fitness,
and maintaining muscle mass are all benefits of muscle-strengthening
activities. Examples of muscle-strengthening activities include lifting
weights, using resistance bands or using your own body weight for push-
ups, pull-ups or sit-ups. Flexibility activities are also an important part
of an exercise routine. Some types of physical activity, such as dancing,
require more flexibility than others. Perform general stretching exercises
or participate in yoga to increase your flexibility.
Current guidelines suggest that adults should perform muscle-
strengthening activities that involve all major muscle groups (legs, hips,
back, chest, abdomen, shoulders and arms) on two or more days a week.
There are no current guidelines for flexibility activities.
Visit the “resources” section at www.MyEatSmartMoveMore.com for
examples of muscle-strengthening and flexibility programs.1. Set a simple goal for strengthening or
stretching.2. Choose a sample strengthening program for your use.3. Walk for 20 minutes.4. Be active at your desk by trying
simple desk stretches.5. Perform three or more muscle-strengthening exercises.6. Choose a sample strengthening
program for your use.7. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Week Three:Strengthen and Stretch
Eating healthy is important as you become more physically active. A healthy,
balanced diet with plenty of physical activity also helps maintain a healthy
body weight. Make sure that you put the right kind of fuel into your body to
keep it going. Here are some simple steps to help you eat smart.
1. Re-think your drink. High-calorie sodas and fruit drinks add extra
calories and few nutrients to our body’s fuel tank. Choose water or low-
calorie beverages most often.2. Right-size your portions. Supersized restaurant servings provide more
calories, fat and salt than you need for good health. Prepare your own
meals to control potion size.3. Enjoy more fruits and veggies. They offer essential nutrients for good
health and are low in calories to help us maintain a healthy weight.
Make them a regular part of your meals and snacks.
4. Choose whole grains. Whole grains such as brown rice, oatmeal and
whole-wheat bread are a great source of dietary fiber. Fiberpacked
whole grains help us feel fuller with fewer calories.1. Choose water or a low-calorie beverage.
2. Walk for 30 minutes.3. Choose a fruit or veggie for your snack.
4. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
5. Instead of eating out, pack a brown bag lunch
or cook at home.6. When choosing a parking spot, park further
away from the building.7. Choose a smart snack such as whole-grain crackers and
granola bar, fresh fruits and vegetables or popcorn without butter.
