tighten due to numerous EO plant turnarounds scheduled for 2Q and 3Q 2013. The general trend in Europe in recent years is towards market consolidation, which involves capacity losses, acquisitions and a captive demand instead of merchant demand. However, Shell Chemicals was reported in Oct 2012 to be mulling an expansion of EO production capacity at its facility in Moerdijk, Netherlands. At present, its nameplate EO equivalent capacity is 305,000 tonnes/y, which would be increased by the proposed expansion. Contract EO prices for Mar 2013 increased by 41/tonne, pushing the high end of the evaluated ranges to a record high level. Developments in the market in the coming years will likely be determined by macroeconomic conditions. EODs are increasingly being favoured, but the downstream monoethylene glycol market will play between balanced to tight in 2013. BASF has 500,000 tonnes/y EO capacity in Antwerp, Belgium; INEOS Oxide has 420,000 tonnes/y capacity in Antwerp, Belgium; and Shell has 305,000 tonnes/y capacity in Moerdijk, Netherlands. The agreement is rooted in a shared commitment to sustainability and high-performance products derived from triglyceride oils. Commercial supply of multi- thousand ton quantities of highly sustainable algal oil is expected to originate from the Solazyme Bunge Renewable Oils Joint Venture oil manufacturing plant in Brazil. Sales of product are anticipated to commence in 2014, with pricing to be competitive and based upon Solazyme’s cost of manufacturing. Evonik launches copolymer to controlrheology of surfactant systems

Evonik introduces TEGO Carbomer841 SER, a cross-linked polyacrylicacid copolymer (Acrylates/C10-30Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer)designed to control the rheology ofsurfactant systems, especially for verymild formulations based on sulfate-and/ or PEG-free surfactants. Thecopolymer provides synergisticthickening in combination withelectrolytes such as NaCl. It can beused for various personal cleansingsystems and it provides clarity inshampoos or body washes. Even low-level surfactant systems can beformulated with the new product. It iscompatible with cationics and createsstable viscosities over a wide pHrange. The high density powderTEGO Carbomer is easy to handleand cold processable. Evonik alsorecently launched PEG-free W/Oemulsifier ABIL EM 120, especiallysuitable for stabilizing pigment-containing emulsions.

Wacker launches new products at in-cosmetics

Munich-based Wacker Groupintroduced Belsil REG 1100 at in-cosmetics 2013. The new siliconeresin elastomer gel combines the skinsensation produced by non-crosslinked silicone polymers with thefilm-forming properties of siliconeresins. This combination of propertiesmakes the gel a multifunctional activeingredient for skin-care applicationsand decorative cosmetic products. Inaddition to forming a pleasantly soft,water-repellent film that adheres wellto the skin without becoming sticky, the gel also imparts a unique texturethat leaves the skin feelingextraordinarily soft and silky. The newsilicone resin elastomer gel produceslong-lasting effects in cosmetic

products and leaves the skin feelingpleasant and silky soft. Another focuswas new hair-conditioning agentBelsil ADM 6102 E. This new productis an aqueous macroemulsion of anaminofunctional silicone. Thestructure of the resulting siliconeactive agent has been optimized todeliver hair-conditioning properties, allowing the typical effects of siliconeto unfold even at low concentrations. This product adheres well to thesurface of the hair, does not crosslinkand makes hair easy to comb whileproviding softness.

APPLICATIONSPersonal careproducts

Momentive introduces ready-to-use,multifunctional silicone formulations

Momentive Performance Materials(MPM) introduced two ready-to-use,multifunctional silicone formulationsat in-cosmetics 2013. The blend ofingredients in Silsoft E-Pearl PFemulsion and Velvesil Mul-T gel canallow formulators to eliminate thetime and additional steps involvedwith working with a number ofindividual ingredients. Both newproducts can deliver ‘exceptionalflexibility and convenience’ whilehelping provide highly desirablebenefits for a large number ofskincare applications. Silsoft E-PearlPF emulsion can provide the extra‘something’ at the end of theformulation process, from enhancingthe feel to strengthening the claimsthat can take it to ‘new andimproved’. It can help provide theconsumer with an outstandingsensory experience, hydrating feel, and line-blurring and skin-brightening benefits. This blend ofattributes is normally not assembledin one formulation. Silsoft E-PearlPF emulsion is a patented, nonionicemulsion that easily incorporatesinto formulations. Easily dispersiblein water, it can be post-added tomany existing formulations. SilsoftE-Pearl PF emulsion may be

considered for use in skin careproducts such as moisturizers, anti-aging, creams/lotions, masks andtoners (O/W emulsions); sun careproducts; and colour cosmetics suchas foundations and concealers. Itcan help provide the following keyfeatures and typical benefits:extremely easy to use; soft, smooth, moisturizing silky feel due to siliconecontent; light diffusion effects; andoutstanding lubricity andspreadability. Velvesil Mul-T gel is ahighly versatile material thatcombines the potent, translucentsoft-focus ability of boron nitride withthe powdery, velvety touch ofpatented Velvesil chemistry. It maybe used in a range of multi-benefitpersonal care products includingcolour cosmetics, skin care products(W/O, O/W, W/Si emulsions), oilabsorption products, sun careproducts, and anhydrous products. Both Velvesil Mul-T gel and SilsoftE-Pearl PF emulsion are paraben-free to help meet consumer andindustry demand.
