For over 50 years, the success of European windows was driven by the development of tilt-and-turn hardware and insulating glass panes. The tilt-and-turn window is now established as one of the leading technologies worldwide.
In 1999, a team of engineers set out to innovate a new generation of windows. Their aim was to boost the attractiveness of wood windows, which were steadily losing market share. At the University of Applied Sciences for Architecture, Wood and Civil Engineering in Biel, Switzer-land, scientists and top window manufacturers collaborated closely with Sika on the development of the structurally bonded window.
Bonding technology will now pave the way for new generations of windows that combine high design appeal with supreme technical per-formance at a reasonable cost.
Structurally bonded windows already have a proven track record for all types of frame material. Since their launch a decade ago, bondedassemblies have captured a market share in central Europe of over 20 %, even becoming the leading window technology in Switzerland and Austria. This is underscored by the 20 million-plus bonded windows now performing to the full satisfaction and delight of their owners. We atSika pride ourselves on the fact that our adhesives and sealants are incorporated in most of these products. In developing window adhesives,we are able to draw on our decades of experience with UV- and weather-resistant adhesives for structurally glazed facades.

Windows with L frames achieve an optimum frame factor due tothe fact that the insulating glass unit is wholly supported by the ad-hesive. Architects appreciate the resulting full-glass exterior, whilethe superior thermal and sound insulation in conjunction with a lowframe-to-glass ratio makes a compelling argument for the entiredesign team. Owners are equally delighted by the long service life andminimal maintenance requirement for structurally bonded windows.
