Embedded PlatformsThe basis for accessing automotive bus systems
The Ixxat FRC Embedded Platforms form the basis for manifold testing and analysis applications – both with Ixxat automotive software tools as well as with customer-specific software solutions.
Theembeddedplatformshaveapowerfulprocessor,areal-timeop-eratingsystemaswellasavarietyofdifferentautomotivecommunicationinterfaces.Theyarethereforeidealforapplica-tionsinwhichseveralbussystemsaretobemergedintoasingledevicewithitsownprocessingpower.ThePCisonlyneededforconfigura-tionorstimulation/visualizationofdata,astheactualintelligence–fore.g.thetransportprotocols–isout-sourcedtotheembeddedplatform.Additionally,itispossibletoimple-mentstand-aloneapplicationsinor-derto,forexample,combineseveralbussystemsviaagatewayinavehiclewithoutacontrolPC.WhenusingtheIxxatautomotivetools,therequiredapplication-de-pendentfunctionscanbeactivatedonthedeviceviaruntimelicense.
Test bench
Inthetestbench,vehiclepartssuchastheelectronicpowersteeringarefrequentlytestedisolatedfromthevehicle.Thecommunicationinterfaceshouldbeinstalledclosetothedeviceundertest,inordertominimizetheinterferenceinthebustopology.Inordertobecomeoperational,mostECUsalsorequireasimulationofthe–fromtheirview–remainingvehiclebus.TheEmbeddedPlatformsweredesignedforthisuse,bothfeaturingacommunicationinterfaceaswellasaresidualbussimulationinonedevice.UsingthecorrespondingIxxat
tools,theplatformscanbeconfiguredwithoutowncodingeffortandcanbeplaceddirectlyatthedeviceundertest.Thetestbenchcomputeristhenconnectedwiththeplatformacrossanydistance. Functional simulation
ECUsaresometimesrequiredtorespondtocertaineventsinrealtime.PC’sareofteneithertooslowornotsecurelychronologicallydefined.Inthesecases,theintelligentembeddedplatformscanbeusedforfunctionalsimulations.ResponsesarepromptlyindicatedandthenforwardedtothePC–time-uncritically.
Analysis
Theplatformscanalsobeusedforbuscommunicationanalysis.AsimpleusecaseisthepureinterfacefunctionwithacorrespondinganalysissoftwareonthePC.However,thestrengthoftheintelligentdevicesisthepre-processingofdata.
Thankstoefficientpre-processingofdata,itispossibletoonlysendselected,physicalsignalsfromdifferentbussystemstothePCforevaluation.ItisrecommendedtouseEthernetwhenconnectingtothePC,sincethemeasurementresultsthencanbetransmittedacrosslongdistanceswhilebeinggalvanicallyisolatedandfail-safe.Othertypesofconnectionsarealsosupported,suchasUSBorWi-Fi.
Development platform
Formostapplicationcases,Ixxatoffersthecorrespondingtoolsforplatformconfiguration.Nevertheless,therearespecificapplicationcaseswhereitmaybenecessarytocreatecustomizedsolutions.TheopenplatformarchitectureofIxxat’ssolutionsmakesitpossibletoveryquicklyprovideadaptationsandextensionsaswellasfullycustomizedsolutions.Ifnecessary,thiscanalsobeperformedbytheuseraloneusingthesoftwaredevelopmentkits.

Automotive Configuration ToolEmbedded Platform + ACT = Versatile Solutions Enabled
The embedded platform only provides the processing power and the desired interfaces in an automotive-suitable form factor. A total solution is achieved when a corresponding configuration has been created for these devices. For this purpose, HMS offers the Automotive Configuration Tool, ACT – a powerful, yet easy to use PC software with versatile functions and possibilities.
Residual bus simulation
TheresidualbussimulationviewoftheACTtoolprovidesasimulationenvironmentforoneormoreECUsinordertotesttheseindependentlyofothernetworkdevices.Thisincludes,forexample,generationofthenecessarycommunicationtrafficaswellasautomaticcalculationofsignal-basedCRCsandalivecounters.Withoutprogrammingeffortandsupportedbyaconfigurationwizard,the user is guided through a few, logical graphical configurationstepsofaresidualbussimulation.Thegeneratedfunctionmoduleisautonomouslyexecutedontheembeddedplatform.
XCPonEthernet
WiththeXCPonEthernetsolution,itispossibletocontroltheresidualbussimulationviaastandardizedprotocolandtoevaluatecommunicationdata.Forthispurpose,allsignalsoftheCANdband/orFIBEXfilearemergedinaA2Lfile.TheA2Lfilecanthenbeimportedintosuitablesoftwaresolutions,enablingrepresentationofallsignalspresentonthebusandtoinfluenceallsignalssentbytheresidualbussimulation.
IxAdmin
TheIxAdministheadminis-trationtoolfortheconnectedembeddedplatform.WiththeIxAdmintool,createdconfigurationscanbeloadedonthedevice,updatescanbeperformed,runtimelicensescanbemanagedandbasicsettingscanbemade.TheIxAdmincanbeconnect-edtothedeviceviaUSB,EthernetorWi-Fi.

Signal and data logger
Theloggerisaddedtothegatewaycon-figurationasavirtualbus.Signalsand messagestoberecordedcanbemappedontheloggerbusviadrag&drop,similartotheotherbussystems.Inaddition,itispossibletodefineand
tographicallyconfiguretriggerinputsonasignalbasis.Optionally,aringbuffercanbeconfiguredtoenablerecordingofdatatothestoragemediawhichwasreceivedbeforethetriggerevent.Recordingthentakesplaceonacommontimebasisforallconnectedbussystems.Dependingontheappli-cation,differentSDHCcardrecordingformatscanbechosen.Theloggercanbeusedindividuallyorinparalleltoaresidualbussimulation.Recordingscanalsobeplayedbackagainlaterinthecorrectchronologicalorder.
Generic Ethernet
InadditiontotheCANinterfacesinstalledinthedevice,theIxxatFRCEmbeddedPlatformshaveupto16„virtualCANonEthernet“buses.AnIxxat protocol is used here, which allowsforthereceiptandtransmissionofmessagesfromandto16differentIPaddresses.ForeachvirtualCANbus,theACTgeneratesaCANdBbusde-scriptionfile,whichtheremotestationcanusetointerpretthedatastream,similartoarealCANbus.Dependingontherequirement,avirtualCANchannelcanbeevaluatedbythecontrolPC,analyzedwiththeIxxatcanAnalyserortransformedtoCANagainviaanIxxatCAN@net.
EtherCAT
TheFRC-EP190comeswithanEther-CATextensioninordertocombinetheautomotiveworldwiththeindustrialworldinthetestbench.WiththeACT
tool,thesignalsfromthevehicleorECUcanbeselected,whicharetobeanalyzedorstimulatedviaEtherCAT.TheEtherCATconfigurationcanbereaddirectlyfromthedevice.
FDX
TheFastDataExchangeprotocolisanEthernet-basedcommunicationinter-faceandrepresentsafavorablealter-nativetoXCPonEthernetforaccessingphysicalsignals.FDXdoesnotrequireanelaboratecommunicationstackandcanthereforebequicklyimplementedonanytargetplatforms.FortheFDXinterface,theACTgeneratesanXMLdescriptionfilethatcanbeusedfortheinterpretationofthedatastream.
Signal visualization
Thesignalvisualizationisaddedtothegatewayconfigurationasavir-tualbus.Usingtheintegratedwebserver,itallowsasimpledisplayandstimulationofallmappedsig-nals.Anydevice(PC,smartphone
ortablet)canbeusedhereasadisplaydevice.ThebasicrequirementisonlyaHTML5-capablewebbrowser.HMSprovidesagenericHTMLpageforthispurpose,whichcanbeadaptedbytheusertoownneeds.ThevisualizationdeviceisconnectedviaUSB,EthernetorWi-Fi.
User code
Inadditiontothevariouspossibilitiesofthestandardgatewaysolution,itispossibletoimplementown,specificfunctions.Forthispurpose,theusercodebusisaddedasavirtualbusofthegatewayconfiguration.Signalsormessagesthataremappedviadrag&dropfromandtoallotherbussystemsserveasaninput/outputfortheowncode.TheusercodeapplicationiswritteninstandardCandmayrepre-sentspecificalgorithms.Digitaloutputcontrolaswellasimplementationofacomplex logger trigger module is there-forepossible.
Liketheresidualbussimulation,thegatewayconfigurationisanotherviewoftheACTtool.Thegatewayisaversa-tilesolution,whichcanbeusedaloneorinconjunctionwitharesidualbussimulationtocombinedifferentdatastreams with each other, regardless ifphysicalorvirtualbussystemsarebeingaddressed.ThegatewayviewoftheACTtoolisdividedintotwoareas:sourceandtar-get.Regardlessofbussystemhandled,messagesorindividualsignalsfromthesourcetothetargetbusarealwaysmappedinthesamewayviadrag&drop.ThecreatedconfigurationcanbeloadedonanIxxatembeddedplatformandexecutedstand-alone.

Level 1:Software adaptation of an existing Ixxat product
Foracustomerproject,CANsignalsinavehiclehadtobeconvertedtodigitalfrequencies.ThiswasnecessaryinordertoadaptanewCAN-basedenginetechnologyforcommercialvehiclestoourcustomer‘ssolution.Inthefirstapproach,thecustomerhadselectedthestandardCANio250inthePCBver-sion.Duringconsultationitwasconcludedthattherequirementscouldnotbemappedwiththestandardfirmwareofthedevice.BasedontheCANioADK(applicationdevelopmentkit),acustomizedfirmwarewasdevelopedwhichisprogrammedintothedevicesbeforedeliverytothecustomer.
Level 2: Hardware adaptation for an existing Ixxat product
Specificdevicerequirementsfromacustomerweremetbycustom-izingtheFRC-EP170motherboardwithregardstointerfacecompi-lationandpinassignment.Thehousingcoloranddesignwasalsomodifiedaccordingtothecustomer’sspecification.
Level 3: Completely customized product
AfterhavingprovidedthedisplaydeviceAZG2000toZFFriedrichshafenAGforseveralyears,HMScreatedthesuccessordeviceAZG3000throughacustomizationproject.Downwardcompatibilitywasveryimportant,andHMSmanagedtorepresentthefunctionalrangeoftheAZG2000modelalsointhenewAZG3000device.
