Broadstream Communications

The Broadstream IPTV Transport Network has been designed from the ground up to integrate with your current or future network. Broadstream's IP Virtual Head-end Service is built around industry standards to ensure complete interoperability with your selected access network, middleware and set top box providers.

Broadstream removes the complexity of owning and operating an IPTV video head-end and teleport by delivering the elegantly simple solution and interface with the service provider.

Broadstream’s digital satellite-based network minimizes capital and operational expenditures for the service provider, accelerates TelcoTV delivery, and improves viewing variety and quality for the end consumer. Key technical components of Broadstream’s solution include:

1. Content and Programming Broadstream has secured the industry’s largest library of linear IPTV transport rights agreements with national programmers and broadcasters to offer a one-of-a-kind channel line-up - simplifying the acquisition process for the service provider. Broadstream receives this content directly from the programmers, and feeds it into our encoding platform. Content is primarily video programming but also includes a number of digital music channels.

2. Encoding Broadstream encodes the video into MPEG-4 AVC transport streams at a constant bit-rate, ensuring high quality viewing while giving the service provider the confidence to guarantee two simultaneous streams per household over

ADSL. Broadstream’s high-end encoding platform provides superior viewing quality at a 30% bandwidth savings compared to self-built systems.

3. IP Streaming The MPEG-4 transport streams are encapsulated in UDP/IP and sent as individual multicast streams to the satellite uplink. The IP streaming platform also applies IP QOS and applies the IP multicast address for that channel.

4. Satellite Transport Broadstream uplinks the IP multicast streams in a secure DVB format to Broadstream’s satellite. At the service provider’s central office or POP, Broadstream provides and installs the receive platform – including the satellite dish and receivers, and decryption & demodulation equipment - required to convert the DVB format back to IP for handoff via redundant Gigabit Ethernet connections. The service provider can then deliver the video streams as native IP or encapsulate them in ATM.

5. Local Encoding/Streaming (optional) Broadstream also offers on-site encoding services to locally encode and stream local off-air (including Emergency Alert System) and regional and/or community programming. This service is installed, configured, tested, and supported by Broadstream and is fully compatible with Broadstream’s national programming feeds.

6. System Architecture Each component and stage of the Broadstream network is fully redundant, and proactively monitored and managed from Broadstream’s Video Operations Center (VOC). This level of management and reliability far exceeds that of the cable and DBS competition.

EdgeStream's Video on Demand and IPTV Streaming software cost effectively enables error free transportation of high bit rate video over the public Internet (HTTP/TCP-IP). The software works with standard media players, uses standard compression formats and network protocols to allow uninterrupted data flow from source to client, even over 20 router hops, so that end users get uninterrupted video streams on a PC or on a TV through an IP set top box.
