SOLMAX’S PRODUCTS Polyethylene geomembranes represent the most utilized geomembranes in the world . HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) and LLDPE (Linear Low Density Polyethylene) represent over 60% of all geomembranes used for the various containment applications . Polyethylene is the most common plastic and has an excellent chemical resistance, meaning that it is not attacked by strong acids or bases . For these reasons, it is a prime choice for most designers .
In North America, the white reflective finish is standard and is applied on all Solmax geomembranes at no additional cost for all products with a thicknesses of 60 mils or greater . As such the industry will benefit from:
Improved imperviousness of the active barrier Ease of installation Increased service life when exposed Increased proper backfilling time
6
HDPE GeomembranesSince 1997, Solmax has been manufacturing HDPE geomembranes and offers a standard product that meets or exceeds all the minimum requirements of the GM-13 specification developed by the GRI and is recognized across the world as the specification of choice for critical containment applications. HDPE geomembranes are the most commonly used liners for containment . They offer high mechanical strength properties as well as very high chemical resistance and UV resistance .

TS LLPDE Geomembranes
Solmax manufactures a standard LLDPE geomembrane that meets or exceeds the GRI GM-17 specifications, which are recognized as the worldwide standard for containment with LLDPE geomembranes .
LLDPE geomembranes have become increasingly popular in recent years . While being a little less resistant to mechanical and chemical stress than HDPE liners of the same thickness, they still offer good chemical and mechanical resistance . The main attribute of LLDPE making it more and more popular is its high flexibility allowing the liner to drape around any protrusions and imperfections of the existing terrain much better than with the stiffer HDPE geomembranes . Its differ-ent molecular structure makes it less brittle at low temperature . This allows for an improved stress crack resistance and a an easier weldability in cold weather conditions .

PVC GeomembranesSolmax has been prefabricating PVC geomembranes for over 25 years, while much less chemically resistant than Polyethylene geomembranes, PVC liners still offer great chemical resistance to products such as salt. Their high flexibility and elasticity allows the prefabrication of panels which reduces field seaming. Their low thermal expansion coefficient reduces the wrinkles and chances of damaging the liner during installation .

RAW MATERIAL QUALITY CONTROL
Solmax uses resin from internationally recognized resin manufacturers . Upon reception, each lot is given a batch number to ease identification and traceability of raw materials. The incoming resin used by Solmax is monitored by Solmax’ Quality Control Department .
RESIN MANUFACTURERSThe resin manufacturers need to provide quality control data documentation to Solmax, confirming for each lot that the raw materials test results comply with Solmax specifications for the following properties:
The carbon black content is applicable if the resin is preblended (Carbon Black Content specification ASTM D4218). When the resin is not preblent, carbon black is added during the production of the geomembrane roll .
PRODUCT QUALITY REPORTEach lot of raw material and of carbon black material from a supplier is accompanied by an analysis certificate. A copy of this report is sent directly to the quality control department for approval before use .
RESIN AND ADDITIVE STORAGEThe resin colorants and additives are stored in a manner to allow preservation of their properties, traceability of materials, and to use on a first in first out basis.
BATCH PREPARATIONAt Solmax, all resin & carbon black are carried by vacuum system to avoid any contamination . In addition to the QA/QC standard procedure and upon specific request of a project, we at Solmax confirm that:
1. The virgin resin shall be mixed with the appropriate amount of carbon black, as per the project specification. 2 . Carbon Black content is to be monitored during production . 3. Rolls which fail to meet the specification for carbon black are discarded.

ROLL QUALITY CONTROL
MANUFACTURING PROCESSES Solmax international has two manufacturing plants for polyethylene geomembranes. The first one is located in Varennes, Québec, Canada, on the south-shore of Montréal. The plant comprises of three film production units: 2 three layers co-extruded production lines and 1 single layer production line . The plant has a total geomembrane production capacity of approximately 36 million kg annually .
The second plant, Pelabuhan Klang, Malaysia, is equipped with 2 three layers co-extruded production units and has a production capacity of approximately 27 million kg annually .
These equipments can produce all the common types of polyethylene geomembrane ranging from 6 .15 to 8 m in width, with thicknesses between 0 .5 and 3 .0 mm . Solmax is able to transform several types of resins, including High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and other polyethylene configuration, as well as linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). All these resins can be used in the manufacturing of smooth or textured (on one or both sides, in order to improve the friction properties) geomembranes .
MANUFACTURING QUALITY ASSURANCESolmax’s manufacturing Quality Control policy is to adhere to the highest standards of quality . All employees are required to strictly adhere to all published Quality Control standards at all times . Quality Assurance is an attitude that must prevail among all employees and that attitude, coupled with a strong Quality Control program, will ensure the highest quality of product possible .
Solmax quality assurance department assures that only products meeting Solmax and/or the customer’s requirements are released for shipment . Solmax’s Quality Control and research laboratory will perform simultaneous testing to assure control over all products . The laboratory will also be capable of supporting manufacturing, product development, and research needs . To this end, Solmax is sensitive to Quality Assurance suggestions from its personnel, and welcomes the suggestions of its customers .
The production of rolls is monitored and rolls are periodically inspected visually for identification of all repetitive defects by Solmax QC Inspectors as well as Operators. Any roll identified as nonconforming is set aside and stored separately.
The production lines are equipped with holes detectors (spark tester) into which all materials go before being wound into rolls . If there is a hole in the geomembrane sheet, an alarm advises the operators who discards the roll .

1 . Geomembrane tests are to be conducted in accordance with Solmax technical data sheet and/or the project specifications. The information concerning the tests, test methods, specifications, testing frequencies and minimum values are indicated on the technical data sheet .
2 . For each roll produced, a sample measuring 30 cm x roll width is to be removed and allowed to acclimatize to standard laboratory testing conditions .
3 . Standardized dies are used to prepare the testing specimens . Dies are to be inspected for imperfections on a punctual basis . Dies not meeting ASTM Standards are rejected .
TEST DATA AND ARCHIVESFor each roll produced, a sample is identified and kept for archive.
Tests results are stored in a database to allow traceability and to issue conformity certificates. Test reports are also available upon customers’ request .
TEST EQUIPMENT CALIBRATIONIn accordance with the industry’s best practices, Solmax International is also responsible for ensuring that:
Appropriate test equipment of required accuracy and precision is used to ensure that accurate tests and measurements are conducted in accordance with the properties of the materials specified;
Equipment is uniquely identified, kept and used in the correct manner/environment and that it is secure.
All laboratory equipment is routinely checked to ensure proper operating conditions and calibration . They are periodically calibrated;
Calibration procedures and record calibrations are established, documented and filed;

IDENTIFICATION, HANDLING AND STORAGE
TRACEABILITY AND ROLL IDENTIFICATION Each manufactured geomebrane roll is given a unique roll number . All manufacturing and quality control data relative to each roll is stored in the same database, under the roll number. This identification allows full traceability. Three labels identify each roll: one inside the core and two others under the first wrap of material, directly on the geomembrane sheet, at each end of the roll . These labels show the roll number, resin blend, product code, dimensions, weight and date of manufacture .
ROLL HANDLING AND STORAGEThe equipment used to handle the rolls must allow the handling, with ease, of a 2270 kg (5000 lbs) roll, without damaging it . Each roll is equipped with two polyester or nylon slings to allow for it to be handled properly . It is also possible to introduce a lift truck’s metal axis in the roll core to move it .
The polyethylene geomembrane rolls do not need a protective wrapping for outside storage . The geomembrane rolls can be stacked up to 4 rolls high for smooth geomembrane and up to 3 rolls high for textured geomembrane, without crushing the inside of the roll . They should not be placed in mud or in any places where there is an excess of water, or other kind of materials that could damage the geomembrane .
Prior to being shipped, each roll must be visually inspected and approved for transport .
CONTROL OF NON-CONFORMING PRODUCT
Any material showing damages, such as holes or not meeting the specifications are identified as non-conforming and stored apart from others . Depending on the problem, the non-conforming rolls are either downgraded or recycled .
