When you are considering buying solar power, you would generally find two options in the market – Investing into a rooftop solar plant or buying solar power under a power purchase agreement (PPA). Both the options can be availed under two models: the capital expenditure (CAPEX) model or the operating expenditure (OPEX) model.

As a consumer, we can choose either CAPEX or OPEX model. When we choose CAPEX model, we pay for installation cost and own the installation and are responsible for its maintenance. The energy produced is for our own use. However, this model is very costly and a deterrent for many households and businesses.

In OPEX model, the solar PV installed at the premises is NOT owned by consumer but by a third-party, which is also responsible for its maintenance. However consumer need to enter into an agreement with that party to purchase and consume all the power generated by PV for a long term period (15-25 years). Thus, under OPEX, a third party will install PV at the premises and maintain it, consumer have to buy energy produced by it.

In the OPEX model, an investor or projectdeveloper (sometimes called RenewableEnergy Service Company –RESCO) investsthe CAPEX and consumer pays for theenergy consumed/supplied by the solarpower project delicately developed for aparticular consumer. Both consumer anddeveloper sign a long-term powerpurchase agreement (PPA) for an agreedtenure & tariff.
