The Viper-ST provides overcurrentprotection for systems through 38kVmaximum, 800A continuous currentand 12.5kA symmetrical interrupting.

FEATURESReliable Performance - Viper-STreclosers utilize G&W’s time-provenepoxy polymer system to fully encapsulate the vacuum interrupters.This system provides excellent insulation while providing fully shield-ed, void-free construction. All mod-ules are UV protected and 100% factory tested for partial discharge. The Viper-ST recloser utilizes thelatest in magnetic actuator technology. The interrupter andactuator assembly has been tested forover 10,000 mechanical operations toassure a long operating life.

Operator Safety - Vacuum interrupters are sealed within soliddielectric insulation providing deadtank construction. A hookstick operable, manual trip and lockout handle prohibits operation either fromthe control or remotely. A mechanicalblocking device further assuresagainst accidental close through thehandle. An open and closed contactindicator verifies contact position.Contact status and lockout conditioncan also be verified at the control.

Maintenance-free – Solid dielectricinsulation provides a maintenance-free installation. Electronic equipmentassociated with the operation of themagnetic actuator(s) are located in thecontrol.

Ease of Operation -The Viper-ST is compatible with theSchweitzer SEL-651R control.

Ease of Installation - The Viper-ST islightweight and compact. Site-readydesigns provide all accessories includ-ing bracket, arresters and voltagetransformers preassembled prior toshipment significantly reducing instal-lation time. One single control cablebrings all current, breaker status andtrip/close information into the control.

Application Flexibility - Units aredesigned for overhead, substation andpadmount applications. Polemountedunits can be equipped with either horizontal or vertical insulators. Viperreclosers are designed with IEEEinterface apparatus bushings permit-ting the use of either silicone insula-tors for overhead applications orelbow connectors for padmount orriser applications. Removable sili-cone insulators are standard for over-head applications. This feature permits easy field replacement if aninsulator is damaged. Higher externalBIL rated insulators can also be usedin high pollution areas and can beretrofitted if necessary.

Smart Grid / LazerTM AutomationSolutions - The Viper-ST is automa-tion ready, simplifying conversion forany future automation requirements. A multi-ratio current transformer isencapsulated within the module. Thecurrent transformer is provided atratios of 500:1 and 1000:1. Inputs tothe control are field changeable. CTaccuracy is +/-1%. Capacitive stylevoltage sensors encapsulated withineach module permit voltage readingfor network reconfiguration while elimi-nating the need for add-on sensors

and cabling. Voltage sensing accu-racy is +/-3% over the temperaturerange +65°C through -20°C when tested as a system. The accuracy is +/-5% at -20°C through -60°C.External voltage and current sensorscan also be used depending on application requirements.

Complete Lazer automation pack-ages are available offering a pre-engineered solution for applicationsrequiring intelligent automatic switch-ing and power restoration. The pack-ages feature one or more protectiverelays (typically Schweitzer),equipped with distribution and com-munication capabilities. Availablecommunication devices include fiberoptic transceivers and wireless radio.

DEAD-LINE OPERATIONThe unique design of the Viper-ST magnetic actuator system provides forlocal and remote operation of the recloser in the event that the ACsource power is lost or interrupted.

OPERATION PRINCIPLEThe Viper-ST recloser monitors the circuit using internal multi-ratio currenttransformers and voltage sensors.The unit is powered by an external120 VAC or 125 VDC source. In theevent AC power is lost, the unit oper-ates through the batteries located inthe control.

Recloser sequence operations, trip-ping and overcurrent sensing is anautomatic function of the electroniccontrol. Each phase module incorpo-rates a magnetic actuator and driveassembly. Each magnetic actuatoruses a permanent magnet to hold asolenoid plunger in the closed positionwhile maintaining a charge on theopening spring. Trip/close operation issimply accomplished by energizingthe trip coil which generates a mag-netic flux in the opposite direction andreleases the trip spring. The control

may be set for three distinct operatingmodes to allow for maximum applica-tion flexibility: • 1� trip /1� lockout• 1� trip /3� lockout• 3� trip /3� lockout

MANUAL TRIP OPERATIONOperation of the hookstick operablemanual trip handle trips and locks outthe recloser. Pulling the handle downtrips and locks out the selected phase.A contact position indicator is providedindicating open or closed status of thecontacts for each phase. Module contact status is also displayed at thecontrol. Operation of the manual triphandle disables any local or remote closing operation until the handle isreset. A mechanical blocking devicefurther assures against accidentalclose through the handle. The han-dle is operable from ground level.Once reset, the recloser can beclosed using the control.

CONTROL CAPABILITIESThe Viper-ST works directly with thepopular Schweitzer SEL-651R control. CONTROL CONNECTIONSA twist lock style connector makesthe cable connection between thecontrol and the interrupter controlbox. AC power provides the normalsupply power to the control.

SOLID DIELECTRIC MODULESThe Viper-ST modules are manufactured with an IEEE apparatus bushing interface.Removable silicone insulators arestandard for all overhead applications. If higher external BILratings are required due to localenvironmental conditions, higherrated insulators can be provided initially or retrofitted in the field byutility personnel. For dead-front,padmounted applications 600Aapparatus or 200A deep well bushings are available.

PADMOUNT APPLICATIONSFor applications where space islimited at the substation orwhere underground feedersrequire protection, Viper-STsolid dielectric reclosers canprovide an ideal solution usinga dead-front padmount design.In this configuration, the cableconnections can be providedwith either a standard IEEE600A apparatus or 200A deep-well interface for elbow connec-tors. Separate compartmentsare provided for accessing thecables and operators. Controlscan be mounted directly to therecloser frame or within a separate adjacent enclosure.

C. RECLOSER CONSTRUCTIONC1: Mechanism EnclosureThe magnetic actuator and corre-sponding linkage assembly shall behoused within a high impact, UV sta-ble, air insulated, poly-carbonateenclosure. A contact position indica-tor and air vent shall be provided.Lifting provisions shall be provided.

C2. Operating MechanismThe operating mechanism shall utilize a magnetic actuator for open-ing and closing of the vacuum inter-rupters. The magnetic actuator shallbe powered by capacitors located inthe control enclosure. The manualtrip and lockout handle shall bemade of stainless steel for maximumcorrosion resistance. Vacuum inter-rupter contact position indicationshall be accomplished using green(open) and red (closed) indicatorslocated on the bottom of each mech-anism enclosure and through LEDsinside the control.

C3. Vacuum InterruptersInterruption of the fault or load cur-rent shall be accomplished throughvacuum interrupters located insidethe solid dielectric modules.

C4. Solid Dielectric ModulesThe solid dielectric modules shallutilize a time-proven EPOX soliddielectric epoxy insulation to fullyencapsulate each of the three vacuum interrupters. The soliddielectric modules shall be fullyshielded and incorporate a highimpact poly-carbonate, track resistant, UV stable covering. Theoperating temperature range shallbe -60°C to +65°C. A dual ratio,500:1 and 1000:1, current transformer and voltage sensorshall be integrally molded into eachmodule. CT accuracy shall be +/-1%. Modules shall be moldedwith one (1) source side and one(1) load side, IEEE apparatus bushing interface.

D. OPERATIONMonitoring of the circuit shall beaccomplished using internal multi-ratio current transformers and voltage sensors. The unit shall be powered by an external 120 VAC or125 VDC source. In the event ACpower is lost, the unit shall havetrip/close operating capabilitiesthrough the batteries located in thecontrol.

Recloser sequencing, tripping andovercurrent sensing, shall be anautomatic function of the electroniccontrol. If the control is set for single phase trip/lockout, the controlwill trip only the affected phase andnot disturb the other two phases. Ifset for single phase trip, three phaselockout, only the affected phase willtrip, and if the fault is not cleared, allthree phases will lockout. If set forthree phase trip, a fault current onany phase will trip all three phases.

Manual trip and lockout shall be pro-vided by an external, hookstick oper-able handle. Operation of the manu-al trip handle shall activate amechanical block device, disablingany local or remote closing operationuntil the handle is reset.

E. SMART GRID / LAZERAUTOMATIONThe recloser shall be automationready simplifying conversion for anyfuture automation requirements.Capacitive style voltage sensorsshall be encapsulated within eachrecloser module permitting voltagereading for network reconfigurationwhile eliminating the need for add-onsensors and cabling. Voltage sens-ing accuracy shall be +/-3% over thetemperature range +65°C through -20°C when tested as a system. Theaccuracy shall be +/-5% at -20°Cthrough -60°C. Available communi-cations include fiber optic trans-ceivers and wireless radio.

F. MOUNTINGLifting provisions shall be provided.Mounting provisions shall be sup-plied as follows:

___ Aluminum polemount center bracket with arrester provisions on the load and source side. Galvanized and stainless steel optional.

___ Aluminum polemount cluster bracket with arrester provisions on the load and source side.

G. PADMOUNT ENCLOSUREEnclosures shall be made of 12gauge galvanized or stainless steeland manufactured to IEEE C37.72and C57.12.28 standards. Theenclosure shall be mounted independently to facilitate cableinstallation, if desired or for futurereplacement. Enclosures shall betamper-resistant incorporatinghinged access door(s) with penta- head locking bolts(s) and provisions for padlocking. The enclo-sure shall be provided with liftingprovisions and painted with aMunsell 7.0GY3.29/1.5 green finish.

H. ELECTRONIC CONTROLSThe recloser shall be controlledusing the Schweitzer model SEL-651R control.

I. FACTORY PRODUCTION TESTSEach individual recloser shall under-go a mechanical operation checkverifying contact trip/close velocity,travel profile, timing and phase syn-chronisity. The recloser shall be AChi-pot tested one minute phase-to-

phase, phase-to-ground and acrossthe open contacts. Circuit resistanceshall be checked on all phases.Timing tests shall be conducted toverify TCC performance.
