CARE ENOUGH TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN

For the safety and security of our young children, please do not allow any child under your care to use the rest room facilities unless escorted by an adult. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.

Quote from Pope Francis: The Synod has been a journey.

“I can happily say that – with a spirit of collegiality and of synodality – we have truly lived the ex-perience of ‘Synod,’ a path of solidarity, a ‘journey together.’ And it has been ‘a journey’ – and like every journey there were moments of running fast, as if wanting to conquer time and reach the goal as soon as possible; other moments of fatigue, as if wanting to say ‘enough’; other moments of enthusi-asm and ardor. There were moments of profound consolation listening to the testimony of true pas-tors, who wisely carry in their hearts the joys and the tears of their faithful people.

SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS

Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14 1 John 3:1-3 Matthew 5:1-12a

We Share Our Blessings In Fulfilling Jesus Christ’s Mission On Earth

It is said that to have a friend, one must be a friend. We know this to be tried and true. Friendship is more than just receiving ..it is giving! We must give support, encouragement, and love in the good and in the not-so-good times. In bringing the blessings of friendship to another person ..we receive the blessing of friendship in return. We are part of a holy company of friends who have gone before us and those who will come after us known as the “communion of saints.”

Each of us belongs to Jesus Christ. Collectively, we are united to one another in Jesus Christ. As he told his disciples: “I no longer call you slaves . . . I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father” (John 15:15). We are friends with one another in Christ and united in the knowledge of his love. This great unity is proclaimed in our Scripture readings today. In the Book of Revelation, John has a vision of the gathering of the communion of saints. Just as they are united through the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, they are united in their vision of God. In this unity, they praise God with shouts of joy and adoration. Their exists no disharmony among them. Rather they are blessed as one holy people who desire to bring all to the praise of God.

The path of holiness is laid out by Jesus’ teachings of the Beatitudes ..which are filled with procla-mations of blessings. They are the blessings of the saints who have a place in God’s kingdom as be-loved children of God. They are consoled, receive mercy, and are filled with holiness as they see God face-to-face. The great rewards of heaven are theirs.

The Beatitudes make it clear that the saints received these blessings because they were a blessing to the world. They embraced sorrow, mercy, and peace as a way of life ..uniting in friendship with the poor, the lowly, and the sorrowing. They focused their lives on God and were willing to stand firm in their faith in God before others. The holiness of such saints is but a reflection of how God was a part of their lives on earth and that holiness is now fulfilled in their lives in heaven. They, who were a blessing throughout their lives on earth, are blessed now with a life in heaven.

It is through the Book of Revelation that we are given the vision and through the Beatitudes that we are given the way. In the second reading from The First Letter of John, we are given the encourage-ment to live our lives in Christ. With strong support and the tender love of a friend and fellow saint ..John calls each of us to a life which awaits us by being true to our identity as children of God.

Our celebration of the Solemnity of All Saints is a celebration of blessings. We celebrate the bless-ings that the lives of the holy men and women have brought and continue to bring into the world. Our celebration reminds us of their help and friendship that is always with us. They bless our lives through their prayerful intercession on our behalf and by the way they have modeled the Beatitudes for us. They encourage us to be who we are: holy people of God!

If we embrace the teachings of the Beatitudes and the examples of the saints ..then our own identi-ty will be fulfilled. We will take our place with the saints in heaven. This wonderful event happens not of our own initiative. Rather it is by uniting our will with the will of god. Just as we must be a friend to have a friend ..so too, we must be a blessing to have a blessing. This Solemnity of All Saints is meant to be our feast! It is a celebration of holiness and blessing poured forth by God upon our lives and upon the world. ..Shalom! ..Peace be with you! Father Ray

Solemnity of All Saints November 1, 2015

5 St. Margaret Parish - Lowell, MA

By James Gaffney

A visitor who addressed the student body at the local Catholic high school was impressed with the students’ enthusiasm, manners and friendliness. He was amazed to learn that there was no special pro-gram to teach them these basic social skills. The task of the senior class was to lead by example and to teach the incoming freshmen the traditions and values that the school held. Their lead set the tone and the atmosphere for the whole school.

Saints lead by example. They lived their faith in such a way that their life pointed to God, their virtue proved the power of grace and their struggles offered a lesson in hope. The goal of a saint is not to act holy, but to become holy as they pursue and live the will of God. Others notice and follow their example.

It’s no surprise that the Gospel today is the Sermon on the Mount, better known perhaps as the Beatitudes. These are the sure steps on the path to holiness and they express the will of God for the whole church. Faith is not a spectator sport. In the struggle between good and evil, we must pick a side and get involved, fulfilling the promises of our Baptism. We lead by example, by practicing the values and traditions of those who have gone before us and are with God in glory.

SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS

It took centuries to develop the complex manner by which Saints are named today, through beati-fication and canonization. However, we look to all those who are among the triumphant in heaven as Saints - canonized or not. We look to them as examples, inspirations and intercessors. One way of identifying saintly people is to examine how closely they lived the values that Jesus taught. Pope St. John Paul II is an example of such a person. He cared for the sick, the lowly, the margin-alized. He fought for human rights and the dignity of all people. In his own body, he bore the wounds caused by a would-be assassin, and forgave this man. Pope St. John Paul II witnessed to the im-portance of life, even as his body was ravaged by Parkinson’s disease. Saintliness need not be of an ancient time. It is in our midst, as God continues to raise up people of outstanding holiness. Mindful of this, let us remember that the Saints help us by the example of their lives and by interceding for us, that we may resist temptation and answer God’s call to holiness.

KEEPING GOD’S HOME & OUR CHURCH CLEAN

Should you find the pew area where you sit littered with soiled or used items, please, let me know before or after Mass. It would be helpful if each of us would make the effort to assure that we have not left behind any used tissues, candy wrappers, plastic bags, or other soiled items on the pew, in the pew racks or on the floor. We are grateful for your support in this effort. ..Father Ray

THANKS TO THE MANY HELPING HANDS!

This past Saturday, October 24th, the Fellowship Social & Hospitality Committee celebrated its fourth annual Meal of Thanksgiving. I must say, we believe we satisfied everyone’s appetite and even afforded the opportunity for some friends to go home with goodie packages. It was a wonderful social event and the FSHC wishes to thank all of you who participated in any way. There are so many help-ing hands that go into preparation of an event such as this: planning stages; ticket sales and volunteers who provide entrees or desserts; grocery and supply shopping; volunteers for set up and clean up; the parish staff who sell tickets in the rectory to the parish staff who help set up the hall; all our cooks, turkey carvers and servers; and our young parishioners who assisted in serving and 50/50 ticket sell-ing. For the wonderful entrees and scrumptious desserts, and all of your participation, we express our most sincere thanks.

The winner of the Thanksgiving Trivia was Joyce O’Brien who received a complimentary pass for two tickets to a future FSHC dinner; winner of the Door Prize ($25 Market Basket gift card) was Tom O’Brien; and 50/50 Raffle winner ($226) was Michael Pender.

As always, these events would not be successful without your attendance, support and enthusiasm. I and all the members of the Fellowship Social Hospitality Committee thank you most sincerely.

Happy Thanksgiving! Until next time… Lorraine Freitas, Chairperson

LOW-GLUTEN HOSTS ARE AVAILABLE

For those parishioners who are affected by Celiac disease and/or are unable to consume gluten products, St. Margaret Parish is now able to offer low-gluten hosts that comply with the requirements of the Church and the needs of those who cannot tolerate wheat gluten.

The gluten content of these hosts is .01%. According to the magazine Gluten Free Living, experts from the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland call the host “perfectly safe.” It is still recommended that Celiac sufferers consult with their physician before consuming these hosts.

Anyone wishing to receive the low-gluten host should contact Father Ray at the rectory. Fr. Ray will assure that permission for your use is granted by the Archdiocese of Boston - Office of Worship.
