Electricity from the Sun In the 1950s, scientists found a way to make electricity from the sun’s energy. Solar cells, which are made of a mineral called silicon, are placed into panels. The solar cells absorb the energy from sunlight and change it into electricity. Some things which use solar-powered cells today are calculators, watches, toys and outdoor lighting for signs. Solar PowerThe word solar comes from the Latin word solaris, which means sun. So solar power comes from the sun.
