Milestones R Us The Dictionary definition of Milestone is:

an important event, as in a child’s development, the history of a nation, or the advancement of knowledge in a field; a turning point; a very important event or advance

When our 30 First Graders gathered last week to receive their first Siddurim – showing that Morah Stephie determined that each child was now ready and prepared to daven each morning directly from the Siddur – we celebrated ‘All of the Above.’ Indeed it marked an important event for each child, for the history our Jewish nation. It shows advancement and marks a real turning point in their young lives. They now add their innocent voices to all of ours, as we seek continued Blessing from Above. Mazel Tov to all who make this possible.

Parshat Tetzaveh OVERVIEW: Tezaveh (Exodus Ch 27:20 – 30:10): G-d tells Moshe to command the Jewish People to supply pure olive oil for the menorah in the Mishkan (Tent of Meeting). He also tells Moshe to organize the making of the bigdei kehuna (priestly garments): A breastplate, an ephod, a robe, a checkered tunic, a turban, a sash, a forehead-plate, and linen trousers. Upon their completion, Moshe is to perform a ceremony for seven days to consecrate Aharon and his sons. This includes offering sacrifices, dressing Aharon and his sons in their respective garments, and anointing Aharon with oil. G-d commands that every morning and afternoon a sheep be offered on the altar in the Mishkan. This offering should be accompanied by a meal-offering and libations of wine and oil. G-d commands that an altar for incense be built from acacia wood and covered with gold. Aharon and his descendants should burn incense on this altar every day. (C) 2016 Ohr Somayach International

DRASHA: Almost the entire Torah reading of this week concerns itself in great detail with the garments of Aharon and his descendants as they performed their duties first in the Mishkan/Tabernacle and later in the Temple in Jerusalem. The obvious question is why should the Torah devote so much space and detail to such a technical matter. Of what major significance is what those garments looked like and of what materials they were manufactured? I have written about this in previous years but I now have a different insight into the matter, which I wish to share with you. While here in the United States, my visit coincided with the Super Bowl football game, which dominated the attention of three hundred million people. This game is an industry unto itself, generating billions of dollars to all sorts of businesses which are somehow connected collaterally to the actual game. One of the major streams of this collateral revenue is the sale of the uniform jerseys of the teams that participated in the championship game. Now, logically speaking , why should anyone be willing to pay an exorbitant price to wear a uniform jersey with the logo of a team that one does not belong to and the name of some other individual who is a complete stranger to the wearer? Yet, such is the nature of human beings. It is an urge to identify with something or someone greater than the average individual. And clothing is the easiest avenue for such vicarious identification. The Torah recognizes this when it describes the garments of Aharon and his descendants as garments of “honor and glory.” Honor and glory are usually ascribed as being descriptive of the feelings and status of the wearer of these glorious garments.

However, it can also be interpreted as to how the ordinary Jew responds when he or she sees the High Priest in his holy uniform. They feel honored and glorious, part of a great faith with heroic leaders, identified with the vision and promise of Sinai. For noble people, the detailed description of the clothing and the garments only serves to heighten this feeling of identification with something greater and more triumphant. Added to this is the generational benefit that the garments are always the same for centuries on end. The grandfather and the grandchild have the same feeling of self-pride and spiritual identification. This feeling of belonging to the Jewish people, to its faith, past and future, is the key to Jewish survival over the centuries. And, the consistent moral standards of the Torah correspond somehow to the unchanging description of the holy garments of the priesthood of the Jewish people. It is fascinating to note that the older the sports jersey is, the closer to the original design and fabric, the more valuable the item is to people. Well, in a much more exalted fashion, the same is true regarding the priestly garments. The original Torah is the one of eternal worth and generational value. Shabat shalom. Rabbi Berel Wein © 2016

Fourth Grade visits The Star of India Discovery and adventure were brought to life for our fourth graders this week aboard the world’s oldest active ship, The Star of India. The minute the students boarded the ship, they were treated by excellent specialized instructors in period costumes as though they were part of a motley crew of sailors having signed onto the ship out of economic necessity in 1851, bound for San Francisco. They were barked at by the captain and threatened corporal punishment with the cat of nine tails by the first mate. Within minutes the fourth grade was standing respectfully in a straight line. The students spent the remainder of the day learning the rigors, excitements and hardships of a sailor work-ing hard and dreaming of striking gold in the American River! The students, their teachers and all the terrific parent volunteers had a wonderful time. Special thanks to our parent drivers and volunteers: Ynessa McElfresh, Carla Berg, Pam Broudy, Lori Carnot, Edan Dvora, and Wendy Leatherman.

In celebration of their completion of Parshat

Shemot, fifth grade students had a slurpee siyum

with other treats as well. The kids had a really

great time. It was a wonderful accomplishment

and may they all continue to learn and complete

many more Parshiyot. Mazel tov!

The 5th graders are going shopping! This week in

Math the 5th graders made fliers advertising sale

items for their own store. They calculated percent

off and sale price, then shared their ads with their

peers, who went on a shopping spree!

Third Grade Invention Convention

In Miss Lane's class, the students have been learning about

what it means to be an inventor and an engineer. The unit

started with the students watching videos about the things

students can invent when they set their minds to it and was

followed by guest lectures from an engineer and an inventor.

The students culminated this unit with an Invention

Convention where the students each built a new invention,

redesigned a previous invention to improve upon it, or

created a model of an invention they would like to invent.

The students explained why their inventions were unique

and awesome and how they worked during a gallery walk on

Thursday. Then, the students each received their first patent!

It was a real success and the students were extremely happy

with their creativity and ingenuity.

Preschool News In this week’s parsha, Tetzaveh, Hashem tells Moshe to command the Jewish people to supply olive oil for the menorah in the Mishkan and organize the making of priestly garments (bigdei kehuna). The children had so much fun dressing up like the holy priests and learning about the different parts of their clothing. They also had a blast building a Mishkan with real material and tools! Although this was a short week, there were many highlights! Our music teacher, Morah Ronit, is teaching the children songs that they are so excited to share. One favorite was the “lion song”. The weather has had ups and downs giving the kids ample opportunity to explore their playground in the context of heat as well as rain! Dragonfly classes focused on health and nutrition this week by brushing paper teeth with toothbrushes (pictured above), making healthy placemats, sorting health and junk foods, and baking nutritious blueberry muffins. Hummingbirds loved making blue slime with glitter when learning about Night (N & O are the letters of the week).
