SOIL SAMPLING ON SASAKWEI LAKE CLAIM GROUP (N.W. ONTARIO)

GENERAL

In april 1984 Norontex Exploration Ltd. of Dryden was commissioned by Asamera Inc. of Calgary to carry out a soil sampling program on the letters Sasakwei Lake claim group south of Dryden, N,W. Ontario.

The survey was completed from may 2 till may 17, 1984 with interruptions due to bad weather, 314 samples, taken on a 100 x 50m grid, covered the total area of claims 603336, 603338, 603339, 603340 670323, 604310 and part of claims 603335, 603337, 604309, 604311, 604312, 604313, 670205, 670318, 670322, 670324, 670326 (see map on next page).

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The sample area is located on the west side of Sasakwei Lake in the Upper Meriitou Area some 40 kms. south of Dryden, N.W. Ontario, see location map.

Access to the property is easy by boat via Sasokwei Lake, the north end of the lake reaching to within 100 m. of Highway 502, connecting Dryden to Fort Frances. The western portion of the survey area may also be reached via the "Gold Rock trail" departing from Highway 502 about 1 km. north of Sasakwei Lake.

TERRAIN

The topography on the west side of Sasakwei Lake is fairly rugged with steep hills of some 50 m. high and very little level ground. Swamps cover 11 to 12% of the sampled area and support a dense growth of cedars and spruce. Three types of terrain can be distinguished:

1) terrain immediately underlain by bedrock; mostly on top of hills and in steep elopes.

: 2) more gently sloping terrain underlain by glacial overburdenof varying thickness and composition.

3) swampy terrain underlain by at least 0.5 m. of bog and peat.

SOIL

Because of the steep topography, swampy areas are generallywell defined and may contain up to several meters of bog or peat.Unless by use of augers or other drilling techniques, sampling ofthe B soil horizon is impossible in these areas.

Where glacial overburden is present and contains enough finematerial, the soil profile is often well developed as illustratedbelow

A 5 cm. loose organic debris and humusA-, 3 cm. mixed layer, humus, clay, SiiiiA2 5 cm. leached grey layer, mainly inorganic

B variable thickness, oxidized, browninorganic, some roots

In terrain underlain immediately by bedrock, the leached horizon may not exist, but smears and pods of clay and silt may be found in depressions sometimes mixed with humus and fragments of pertly decomposed bedrock.

SAMPLING PROCEDURE

Sample material was obtained by digging with a shovel well into the B-hrizon, where possible, and collecting the deepest part of the soil brought up. Coarse rock fragments and roots were retrieved before putting the material in plastic sample bags.

Samples were taken on a 50 x 100 grid (see sample map). Where the nature of the terrain prohibited sampling in the immediate vicinity (3 m. radius) of a picket station, a more distant site was selected

to obtain the correct sample material.

Average sample depth was 15-20 cm. and the material collected

generally consisted of silty clay to clayey silt with varying amounts of sand and some rock fragments. Quartz and rusty rock fragments were noted on lines 20S and 22S (see remarks on sample lists).

Colour of the sampled medium mostly varied from light brown to grey-brown. In some instances the soil remained grey to depths over 25 cm. The grey material collected in these cases does not necessarily reflect the k^ horizon but probably an unoxidized or non-ferruginous B horizon.

Where overburden was thin or consisting mainly of large boulders it proved difficult and time consuming to obtain the right material and inclusion of some humus and/or locally derived rock fragments was inevitable. This occurred, however, in not more than 10# of the total number of samples taken.^lotes to this regard have been made on the sample lists. / \

APPENDIX I

STARR LAKE PROJECT - 1984 SOIL/TILL SAMPLING

RESULTS:

i

The accompanying geochemical map (Map 2) shows the results of the gold, copper, zinc and arsenic analysis of the soil/till samples taken from the grid.

Gold concentrations ranged from less than 1 ppb to a high of 19 ppb with only four samples indicating gold values of higher than 10 ppb.

i Copper, zinc and arsenic are also plotted on the same map with respective j

high analysis of 1100 ppm, 180 ppm and 57 ppm. Several of the higher copper jzinc and arsenic analyses are clustered in the vicinity of 17 south and 6 east, ihowever, no trace of any sulphide mineralization in outcrop was noted in this iarea. The sample medium in this area was generally described as silty clay <

i with abundant rock fragments.

CONCLUSIONS- ii i

Despite the interesting cluster of some higher copper, zinc and arsenic | analyses, the very low associated gold values here and throughout the surveyed area, would seem to indicate low gold mineralization potential for the property. It is therefore recommended that no further follow-up work be undertaken at the present time. ]
