Structural modelling and analysis software suite for reducing risk and uncertainty in geological models
Software Introduction
Move, structural modelling and analysis
suite of software, is the most complete
structural modelling and analysis
toolkit available providing a full digital
environment for best practice structural
modelling to reduce risk and uncertainty
in the geological models across oil & gas
E&P, mineral resource development, and
CO2 rad-waste storage and geo-technical
projects.
Move provides workflows for digital field
mapping, cross-section construction, 3D
model building, kinematic restoration
and validation, geomechanical modelling,
fracture modelling and sediment
modelling.
The software has been designed by
geologists for geologists, meaning it stays
true to geological principles to create
valid geological models. With the ability
to test scenarios and to model geological
evolution, Move reduces uncertainty by
going beyond static models - which may
be little more than an artist’s impression
or a computer animation. By addressing
time development of structure and
checking geometric and evolutionary
feasibility you are three times more likely
to produce the correct result*.
The Move application is the core product
of the suite, providing a stand-alone 2D
and 3D modelling environment for data-
integration, cross-section construction,
3D model building and data analysis.
Modules are added to Move to provide
workflows for specialist structural
modelling.

Oil and Gas E&P Minerals Academia Geological Surveys CO2 sequestration Rad-Waste Management
Midland Valley has been providing structural geology software and consultancy solutions to the upstream oil and gas industry for 30 years.
Move can be applied to any geological province or tectonic setting, including extension, contraction, strike-slip, inversion, salt and shale tectonics.
By applying our structural approach, geological models are restored and balanced - validating interpretations - which minimises risk on reserve calculations.
The restored geological model is forward modelled to capture attributes including strain and curvature. These attributes can be used as inputs for fracture modelling.
We are fully committed to supporting the next generation of geoscientists and are involved in a wide range of activities with the academic community.
Our Academic Software Initiative provides Move free for teaching - giving students experience with cutting-edge software used in global commercial companies.
Our software tools and workflows are used across a wide range of activities by Government and Public Bodies. We offer dedicated pricing deals to this sector.
Dramatically reduce the cycle time from field-mapping to final map production and delivery of a digital model, combining heritage data with surface and subsurface data.
Structural modelling can provide valid scenarios and therefore significantly reduce uncertainty in site characterisation for CCS projects.
Our software and services can be utilised throughout an entire project or applied in specific aspects including site characterisation, risk assessments and storage capacity calculations.
Improved and validated sub-surface models, where an understanding of the structure and its uncertainty is important in technical design and compliance.
A dynamic rather than static understanding of the geological model is useful in predicting fractures and their connectivity, which affect fluid migration and repository engineering.

Workflow managed 3D structural modelling for model validation and multiple scenario testing
Geomechanical Modelling
Geomechanical Modelling is a module
of Move that utilises elastic mechanical
properties and physical laws of motion (mass
spring technology) to realistically model
3D rock deformation. Multiple scenarios
with different mechanical properties, rock
anisotropies, pin and fault displacement
constraints can be tested and saved within
the workflow for rapid sensitivity testing of
different parameters.
Multi-threaded computation improves
productivity by allowing rapid, simultaneous
runs of multiple, pre-defined scenarios at the
click of a button. Intelligent defaults permit
effective first-pass modelling by generalist
or specialist user.
• ‘Pick-up & Use’ workflow designed with
clear self-explanatory steps.
• Models rock deformation using
mechanical properties.
• Explicit control of shear components and
elastic anisotropy.
• User defined restoration of fault
displacement.
• Advanced analysis tools to compare
results of each workflow.
• Multiple output options including
geocellular volumes for fracture
modelling, seamless integration with the
Fracture Modelling module.
• Parallel computations for rapid scenario
run times.

Workflow managed discrete fracture network (DFN) generation, analysis and direct output of properties through a geocellular model
Fracture Modelling
The Fracture Modelling module can use
deformation calculated at incremental time
steps as proxies to model evolution of the
fracture system and its properties through
time.
It provides 3D discrete fracture network
(DFN) modelling with output of properties
through a geocellular model for use
in reservoir simulation (petroleum), or
geotechnical (mining) studies.
The intuitive workflow-driven approach
allows rapid scenario testing and the
development of multiple models for
sensitivity testing.
Assists geologists working in fractured
rocks requiring to make cost effective
drilling decisions for exploration, production
and geo-technical applications.
• Use stress and strain values derived
from the Kinematic or Geomechanical
Modelling Modules and static attributes
such as curvature as proxies for intensity
and orientation.
• Multiple direct observation inputs - use of
well/drill hole data and field/open pit and
underground measurements to constrain
the DFN.
• Confidently predict in areas without direct
observations using geological proxies
including static attributes and volumetric
strain.
• Fracture network characterisation using
connectivity analysis, including identification
of optimum drainage points, flow pathways,
reservoir compartmentalisation and volume.
• Quantitative analysis with volumetric and
directional outputs for reservoir simulation,
including permeability tensor components
and porosity.

A graphical tool for analysing and understanding the behaviour of fault and fracture systems
Stress Analysis
A new addition to the Move 2014 suite, the
Stress Analysis module enables the user
to rapidly visualise and evaluate 3D stress
states and potential fault activity.
Test a series of principal stresses and
pressure profiles through depth, taking
into consideration hydrostatic, pore and
lithostatic pressures.
Use this data to build and analyse model
scenarios encountered in reservoir and
mine planning, CO2 storage, waste disposal
and other engineering applications, and
reduce uncertainty surrounding likely failure
envelopes.
• Compute stress attributes for Slip
Tendency, Dilation Tendency, Slip and
Dilation Tendency, Fracture Stability and
Slip Stability of planes.
• The colour map shows a colour scale of
the current displayed stress attribute that
is plotted on the Stereonet and Mohr
diagram at a specific depth.
• Visualize and evaluate critically stressed
planes in a 3D View. Any orientation data
selected on the Stereonet or Mohr diagram
is simulatneously selected in the 3D model.
• Quickly estimate which fracture sets
and fault planes are more likely to fail
or reactivate by looking at the colour
map: warmer colours indicate the more
favourably orientated faults to failure as set
in a user defined stress state.

Turbidite modelling on restored palaeosurfaces - reservoir prediction and providing direct outputs for Basin & Reservoir Modelling
Sediment Modelling
The Sediment Modelling module for
Move provides an automated 3D turbidity
current modelling workflow for simulating
turbidite flows onto a palaeobathymetry
and outputting turbidite distribution and
reservoir quality attributes.
The approach is to forward model turbidite
flows on a palaeosurface and to validate the
results with available well data and attribute
maps as appropriate. Following calibration
with available data, the modelling of the
sand body distributions applies to areas
with no well control.
It provides direct output for decision making
and basin and reservoir modelling.
• Developed in collaboration with
Professor D. Waltham, Royal Holloway
University of London
• Predictive turbidite modelling on
paleosurfaces with reservoir quality map
& 3D surface outputs
• Best fit to well data
• Stacked flows
• Short run times enabling testing of
multiple scenarios
• Assess interaction between tectonics
and sedimentation
• Helps reduce the uncertainty in reservoir
distribution and quality
• Intuitive easy-to-use workflow to provide
quick results
• Quantitative Analysis
• Deterministic, stochastic simulations to
fit known data
