Intended use

The SPC11 has been designed for fitting into a machine or anautomation device. In conjunction with permitted drives andmeasuring systems and a proportional directional controlvalve type MPYE−5−..., the SPC11 enables:

fast movement into the mechanical end positions and oneor two selectable mid−positions

manual movement between the end positions.

Depending on the drive used, fixed stops are in some casesrequired for protecting the drive. The end positions can beset with fixed stops. The end position cushioning, movementinto the intermediate positions and manual movement arecontrolled electronically. The SPC11 must only be used asfollows:

 as intended

 in original condition

 without any modifications

 in faultless technical condition

only in conjunction with permitted drives/measuring system combinations.

If used in conjunction with additional commercially−availablecomponents, such as sensors and actuators, the specificmaximum values for pressures, temperatures, electrical data, torques, etc. must be observed. Please observe also nationaland local laws and regulations.

Product−specific terms and abbreviations

The following product−specific abbreviations are used in thismanual:

Term/abbreviation

Meaning

Amplification stage The amplification stage influences e.g. the acceleration behaviour of thedrive. The amplification stage should usually be set in accordance with thespecifications in the manual Drive−specific supplement". If it is necessary tooptimize the positioning behaviour, only the cushioning stage should bemodified.

Cushioning stage The positioning behaviour is determined by the amplification and cushioningstages. The cushioning stage serves for optimizing the starting behaviourwhen movement is made towards the end positions.

Drive In this manual the term "Drive" represents the terms "linear unit"(DGP(I)(L)−...), "cylinder" (DNC−...) or "rotary drive" (DSMI).

I Digital input

O Digital output

Parameter Parameters which must be set for operating the system. This includes thecushioning stage, the amplification stage and the system parameters.

PLC, IPC Programmable logic controller/industrial PC

System parameter Characteristic value which describes both the system structure as well as thefeatures and components of the drive used.

Teach procedure In the Teach procedure, the SPC11 checks the set parameters, learns theposition of the mechanical fixed stops as well as various characteristic systemvalues and saves these in the integrated EEPROM.

2.1 Parameters of the SPC11

WarningIncorrectly set parameters can damage the fixed stops andthe drive.Be very careful when setting the parameters.

The SPC11 must be familiar with certain conditions of use. These conditions of use are described by the following threeparameters, which must be entered directly on the SPC11:

Parameters Display Manual

Amplification stage Influences the accelerationbehaviour of the drive.

Cushioning stage Influences the retracting behaviour when moving to theend positions and intermediate positions.

System parameters Characteristic value for thedesign of the drive.

These amplification and cushioning stages are matchedexactly to certain valve−drive combinations and mass loadsfor horizontal operation.

You can set the amplification and cushioning stages valid foryour application, as well as the system parameters, with thekeys on the SPC11 (see system manual).

2. Parameters of the SPC11 for the DSMI−...

2−4 Festo P.BE−SPC11−DSMI−EN en 0910b

Specifications for setting the parameters

In order to set the parameters, you will require the followingspecifications:

the diameter of the drive (see type plate on the driveused)

the valve type (see type plate on proportional directionalcontrol valve used)

the maximum mass load with which the drive may beloaded.

Mass moment of inertia

Festo supports you in ascertaining the mass moment of inertia with the MTM calculation program (Internet:http://www.festo.com). This program serves for calculatingthe mass moments of inertia of 2nd. grade for various basicbodies and Festo standard parts (e.g. plug−on flange forDSMI−...).

Positioning with different mass moments of insertia:

Positioning with a mass moment of inertia up to 30 % lessis usually no problem. Further reduction of the mass moment of inertia can lead to worse positioning behaviourand make optimization necessary (see system manual).

If necessary, place a basic load on the drive, in order toset a higher mass moment of inertia. Positioning can thenbe made with a greater difference in the mass moment ofinsertia.

Always set the amplification and cushioning stages for themaximum mass moment of inertia used.

2.2 Setting parameters

WarningIncorrectly set parameters can damage the fixed stops andthe drive.Always select the amplification and cushioning stages forthe maximum mass moment of inertia. If in doubt, set firstthe amplification and cushioning stages for the lager massmoment of inertia.

The swivel times specified in section 2.3 as well as optimumsystem behavour can only be achieved if the installation instructions described in the previous section are observed. The resulting swivel times depend on the swivel angleactually used and can vary depending on the direction ofswivel.

Further instructions on the amplification and cushioningstages can be found in the system manual.

Set the parameters as follows:

1. Use the tables in section 2.3 to ascertain the parametersvalid for your application.

2. Then set the parameters. Proceed here as described inthe chapter Commissioning" in the system manual (type P.BE−SPC11−SYS...).
