The summer vacation is the peak period for locals to travel overseas, and every year I have to gently remind relatives and friends not to buy me souvenirs from afar.

If they are kind enough to remember me when they are abroad, then buy some consumables like candies or snacks, but definitely not decorative items that are not necessarily to my liking, clash with the existing decor, and take up valuable space – even with storage.

In fact, my general observation is that most Hong Kong homes look cluttered and claustrophobic because too much furniture and fittings are crammed into the limited space. Many sport their own mini museum of eclectic items collected over the years from overseas trips. If anything, they detract from the aesthetics, and look so out of place as to be an eyesore!

Professional designers recommend single-mindedness in home décor (Remember the KISS principle?). If you’re starting afresh, the best approach is to look at as many themes or styles as possible, through books, magazines, or online websites, and actual visits to lifestyle shops.

Take your time to mull over what each distinctive theme has to offer, and see if they dovetail with your lifestyle and sensory preferences. It is important to bear in mind that you will live with what you’ve chosen day in, day out. So the final choice should perhaps err on the conservative side, but with sufficient details and points of interest, and be flexible enough for modification and refinement.

Transformer 1 – CirceA bed that hides inside a ‘slim’ cupboard – Circe

– in the structure of wall-bed can be converted into a Queen-size bed with just one simple motion.

The opening and closing are done through a handle placed at the sides of the cupboard, which, by a tilting movement, become the support of the bed on the ground. The whole system is self-supporting, and as such, it does not require to be fixed to wall, while the hands-free sliding mechanism makes sure that the bed will come down slowly.

For safety, the tilting opening system is equipped with a stop device, and a self-locking mechanism both in the vertical and horizontal position, which prevent accidental opening or closing.

Equipped with a stuffed textile headboard that is fixed to the backrest panel through snaps, the bed base is made of slats in solid beech plywood, attached to the frame with adjustable nylon and rubber seals. You can also incorporate a bedside light at the side of the cupboard.

He adds that different from the luxury furniture lines of Armani and Molteni & C of Dada Group Limited that serve the high-end market, Clei will target principally the middle and upper-middle class.

“Space is a scarcity in Hong Kong, so every square foot counts,” observes Lam. “As such, multifunctional furniture that save space and money, will certainly be popular.”

Take the example of Clei’s Tango Divano 270, a two-in-one

system with double bed and sofa. During daytime, it serves as a sofa; at night, in just a few steps and seconds, it transforms into a bed, saving you the space to accommodate two separate pieces of furniture.

“The bed occupies a lot of room, but free from its constraint, you can make use of the ‘extra’ area for doing yoga or other activities,” Lam points out. “In fact, our store is only around 1,000 square feet, but we have seven beds and two sofas on display here, which is quite impossible if not for Clei. This vividly shows how transformable system works in small flats.”

The new store now features seven series of Clei transformable furniture, including Tango Sofa 223 (sofa/ double bed system), Circe (wall/ Queen-size bed system), Altea Book 120 Sofa (sofa/ bed/ storage system), App (pull-out table) with Drawer, Telemaco Work (table/ bed system), Kali Duo H 2200 (bunk beds system), and Kali Ponte Board H 2200 (writing desk/ bed/ storage system).

Although the size of Clei’s products is fixed, customers can still customize them by adding in wardrobe with decorated doors, corner unit or modular that integrates with the transformable systems. Transformer 2 – Kali Duo H 2200

Bunk beds in an average bedroom in Hong Kong usually take up half of the room space, and you or your sibling may have to sit and work on the bed. But with Kali Duo, this is not a problem anymore. You can now keep your beds ‘away’.

market is a niche market, and not a mass market. But he sees very strong potentials in its development.

Pollution is bad in Hong Kong. We know that, so we keep indoors most of the time to avoid it. Smart move, right? Wrong. Actually indoor air can be up to five times

worse than it is outside – and we spend 90 percent of our time inside. This was the finding of a study conducted by Dyson and a research team from the Hong Kong Baptist University department of biology in 32 homes in the SAR.

Air quality is measured in particulate matter – a mixture of extremely small particles and liquid droplets. Particulates are deadly as they can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream.

The study showed that the number of PM2.5 (fine particles) in the kitchen is on average 9.9 percent higher than outdoors. Quite a few homes had higher numbers of PM2.5 than in Causeway Bay (369 particle/liter) and Mong Kok (363) – the highest was 440.

Worryingly, when it came to PM0.1 – particles even smaller than PM2.5 and therefore more easily absorbed into the lungs – the average indoor figure was 48.6 percent higher than outdoors. And more than 80 percent of homes sampled exceeded the Environmental Protection Department’s volatile organic compound objectives of 200 parts per billion.

Toxic fumes from cleaning solvents and deodorants are some of the most common indoor air pollutants, a study carried out by the US Environmental Protection Agency suggests. Other major pollutants include cooking gases, mold, pet hair, pollen and allergens.
