ECONOMY, FIRMS AND SOCIETY* LECTURER: ANDREOTTI ALBERTA
CONTENTS
The course is structured into three parts and its overall objective is to highlight the impor-
tance of social relations and networks in socio-economic phenomena. The assumption is
that we cannot understand socio-economic phenomena without taking into account the
social relations that constitute and shape them.
Each part of the course area has a sub-objective:
1) First part: understanding the theoretical assumptions of any analysis of social net-
works and social capital;
2) Second part: understanding the main empirical concepts for the analysis of social net-
works and social capital;
3) Third part: applying those concepts into real life phenomena.
To fulfil the first sub-objective, students are asked to attend classes and studying the
handbooks and scientific articles indicated in the sections ‘Detailed Program’ and
‘Bibliography’. The achievement of the sub-second objective requires participation in
class, the reading of the handbooks, and the practice in the computer lab.

INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE*
LECTURER: BENNETT MILTON
CONTENTS
The course will explicate Milton Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivi-
ty in terms of constructivist perception theory and its application to exercising competen-
ce in intercultural relations. The model differentiates “ethnocentrism”—the denial, polari-
zation, or minimization of cultural otherness, and “ethnorelativism”– the acceptance,
adaptation, or integration of cultural otherness. Movement through the stages is explai-
ned in terms of recognizing and reconciling dichotomies such as stability and change, and
unity and diversity. The reconciliation of issues in ethnorelativism generates a form of
ethicality that is well-adapted to intercultural and multicultural situations, which in turn is
a necessary guide for personal development and change agentry in small and large orga-
nizations.
PREREQUISITES

The aim of the course is to provide a theoretical and methodological framework about
tourism and local development.
In the recent years tourism industry has registered positive growth comparing to other
