Dancer Spotlight

The Pool After Dark Dancers

We met up with professional dancer, Erin Westphal, of Harrahs “Pool After Dark” in Atlantic City, to talk about a night in the life of a Go-Go Dancer.

Society Page: How long have you been a professional dancer?

Erin Westphal: I have always wanted to be a nightclub dancer. I’ve been a Go-Go dancer since 2007 (about 6 years). I received a contact number for a booking agent for Mixx and Mur.Mur. I called her up and set up a time to audition. I even remember the date - it was March 17th 2007. I went in did my thing and got a call that night asking if I could work. That was my first night doing what I’ve always wanted to do. SP: Do you have a day job? If so, how do you manage your professional career and your performing career?

EW: I work a full time job Monday through Friday, like a normal person, lol. It’s not easy on Thursday mornings when I’m running on 3 hours of sleep (if I’m lucky). Not being a coffee drinker, I turn to a sugar free red bull, it helps a little! It’s definitely a change going from a jam packed night club wearing booty shorts and some killer boots, to an office environment. I’m addicted to the rush and when I get up on my platform, that the lack of sleep is worth it.

SP: What dancer(s) inspire you?

EW: So many dancers inspire me, any dancer really. I especially love Beyonce and Ciara. If I could dance like anyone, I want it would be my boo, Krystle Henry. She also dances at the Pool. She’s amazing!

SP: Have you ever felt like you were going to fall into the pool?

EW: I have to dance on small spaces at times, it’s not easy but I adjust. It certainly limits what I can do. It’s especially difficult for me at “The Pool” because if the platforms aren’t in the right spot, they wobble. The bottom of the pool itself is uneven in some spots. I have felt like I was going to fall off many times. Luckily I haven’t and it better stay that way.

SP: Do you make your own outfits?

EW: We don’t have set costumes at the Pool, which allows for a little creativity. I love to wear all black so I throw some neon in the mix. I’ve made a few rhinestone bras to wear. Hmm, my favorite one was the Italian flag for DJ Pauly D. Making eight of them for my girls was not easy. SP: Tell us a MUST HAVE item that you need every single time you dance.

EW: My fake eyelashes. They pull my makeup together. I also have to wear my watch. I feel lost without it.

SP: What are the pros & cons of being a dancer?

EW: Where do I start? Pros: it’s so much fun. I get paid to do what I love. I have met some awesome people and celebrities. It’s also a great source of cardio. Can’t beat it. Now, the cons - ugh! No matter what you do or what you look like you will be criticized! You’re too fat, you’re too skinny. People think you’re a dumb girl just shaking your ass for cash. SO NOT TRUE. Every dancer I’ve ever met was beautiful, talented, sweet, brilliant and humble. People wouldn’t think that way about us if they had an open mind. Also the guys who think they can touch us are the worst. It takes all I have not to stomp a mud hole in their ass!

SP: You perform in front of 2500+ people. Tell us the feeling you get in front of so many people.

EW: The feeling I get when I’m up on my platform in front of 2500+ people is AMAZING! It’s a rush and almost like an addiction. I’m the happiest in front of a crowd even if I have haters around me. I was hired there for a reason and one persons bad attitude and negativity will not get to me.

SP: How do you handle men and women staring at you for hours?

EW: Dancers are suppose to hype the crowd. We get it. A Crowd will normally form around us 95% of the time, so I am used to it. The women are just as bad as the men though. It gets a little creepy but sometimes you have to ignore them. If they get out of control we just let the bouncers handle it. On the other hand, I get my regular people who come in to see me every week who love me and are extremely nice. It can make your night a lot better. SP: Can bad music from a DJ ruin your mood to dance?

EW: Give me a good DJ and it will make my night. A bad DJ can kill your mood, yet, I have to dance and look sexy even if they start out playing elevator music. It’s nice having Vito G as our resident DJ. He knows just what to play at the right times. SP: What is your favorite type of music?

EW: The music I prefer to dance to is hip hop, because I like to move my hips. I like a nice mix though. If rock music is played, it brings

out my inner sex kitten! It’s all about having a good time and being sexy. We are there to entertain. SP: What is your most embarrassing moment while dancing?

EW: I’ve lucked out so far and haven’t done anything too embarrassing. There has been a few moments when you feel like you’re going to fall and catch yourself, someone always notices. Lol.

Thank you Erin. You can find Erin doing her thing every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at Harrahs “Pool After Dark”.

Atlantic City’s Lori Sunshine is on the rise, and at a fast pace. This gorgeous, incredibly talented songstress has the total package. She is launching her “Sunshine on the Rise” promotional tour at the House of Blues - Foundation Room inside the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey on January 26, 2013. Sunshine’s launch consists of an overseas tour, however, she remains true to her roots in South Jersey and continues to touch lives in all of her travels. Her passion and determination comes from the personal experiences she encountered throughout life and it certainly bleeds through in her performance and music. She believes in connecting with her fans and delivers authentic material straight from her heart. Her captivating presence along with her beauty and exuberant personality, keep her fans wanting more. Sunshine is no rookie to the music industry, the petite urban pop singer has toured and performed around the world in every venue from the coziest cafe to the most amazing amphitheaters. Some stops along the way have included: Russia, Europe and the United States, as well as performances on national television for many shows including the memorable Soul Train.

With her promotional tour kicked into gear, Sunshine started off locally when she performed live with her band last month for a toy drive hosted by Atlantic

City’s first lady, Nynell Langford and the famous NBA superstar, Shaquille O’ Neill. Then she assisted recording artist Estelle in a giving affair, and participated in South Jersey’s All Star Kick Ball Game (Artists vs. DJ’s) Toy Drive event hosted by Major Impact Entertainment. Sunshine has a power team that consists of her personal manager Jeff Watts (of Philadelphia, well known and reputable industry CEO), producer Madman of 609 Productions LLC (underground producer and songwriter), and music director Lonnie Smalls (multi-talented

instrumentalist). Going back to her roots, Sunshine’s rise to the top started with legendary production crew Full Force, business manager Burt Padell, and her previous record deal with DreamWorks Record Label. Although Sunshine’s music career is on the rise, she is also passionate and devoted to teaching. Her commitment to serving as a role model to her community and 31 first graders from Texas Avenue School in Atlantic City, NJ is commendable. While her schedule is jam packed, she makes no shortcuts and gives 110% to everything on her plate. One would think that it is virtually impossible to manage a teaching career, music career, interviews, studio sessions, training, rehearsals, and personal time with family. However, Sunshine proves that if you put your mind and heart into it, anything can be done successfully. Her foundation in God is what keeps her focused

and grounded, and she lives by the mantra, “You get out of life what you put into it.”

To follow this true ray of sunshine, you can find her on her web site at www.LoriLSunshine.com. To book Lori Sunshine, please contact [email protected].

DJ Sat-OneDJ Spotlight

Your Favorite DJs Favorite DJ

Society Page: How did you get started in the business?

Sat-One: I started out playing high school house parties in the beginning, but I got my big break through my childhood friend, DJ Kenny Meez. He gave me my first big room residency in 1997 at a Philly club called Evolution - during Philly’s Delaware Avenue days.

SP: What is the story behind your DJ name?

S-O: I grew up in the mid-80’s Hip-Hop culture, and in Philly it was everywhere. Kids in surrounding neighborhoods were either a B-Boy, MC or Graffiti Artist. I started out as a Graffiti Artist and later became a DJ, which a lot of Graff writers from Philly evolved to. And the name “SAT” is my mother’s initials, Susan Ann Thorpe, who passed away from lung

cancer a few years back, and the “One” is a graffiti thing we would do at the end of a word to show that we were the first to come up with that name.

SP: What do you like about performing in Atlantic City?

S-O: I like being able to play for many different types of people, with the crowd changing week by week. The music and nightclub scene is forever changing, which makes the job interesting and an on-going challenge for me.

SP: You’ve worked with a lot of celebrities. Who is your favorite to work with and why?

S-O: I like working with people I can learn from, who inspire me or makes me look at my craft in a different light. I had a great

opportunity to work with Jeff “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes for over a decade now. His constant evolution combined with undeniable talent keeps him at the top of the game.

SP: What do you think makes you different from other DJs in Atlantic City?

S-O: I like to tell a story with music when I play.

SP: You spin open format music, but what would be on your ideal playlist?

S-O: Wu Tang’s first album.

See DJ Sat-One every Tuesday and Saturday night at Dusk Nightclub in Atlantic City. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

LAFAYETTE, CA, January 14, 2013 – UFC GYM®, the ultimate fitness destination and first major brand extension of the Ultimate Fighting Cham-pionship®, continues its worldwide expansion with the acquisition of LA Boxing®. UFC GYM looks to bring its ‘Train Different’ philosophy, which combines the best of traditional fitness with the innovation of mixed martial arts, to LA Boxing’s already established, elite facilities.

“The UFC GYM experience is second-to-none. Our gyms have incredible energy and through innovative programs members see amazing results,” says UFC President Dana White. “With this acquisition, we continue to grow our footprint as leaders in the global fitness industry.”

Founded in partnership with New Evolution Ventures, LLC, UFC GYM currently has five full-service facilities which average 35,000 square feet in California and Hawaii. It has also started selling membership for locations in New York Metro and Sydney, Australia which will open by April 2013. UFC GYM will begin to transform the boutique LA Boxing facilities, which average 5,000 square feet, to the UFC GYM format.

“The goal of UFC GYM when we launched it three years ago was to create a unique MMA-styled fitness experience for men, women and children that went far beyond the traditional workout,” says Mark Mastrov, Chairman of New Evolution Ventures. “We were drawn to LA Boxing based upon the similarities in our brand DNA. We are thrilled to partner with the exist-

ing LA Boxing team and their franchisees in expanding our shared vision worldwide.”

With the addition of the current 81 LA Boxing locations, UFC GYM will begin to franchise this new model of boutique clubs while preserving the character and guiding principles of its brand. Franchisees will have the unique opportunity to own and operate the new UFC GYM franchise model across the US and the globe.

“Our new partnership will build upon LA Boxing’s growth over the past 10 years in boxing, kickboxing and MMA. We will grow the franchise in the US and internationally benefiting current LA Boxing franchises, their staff, trainers, and members,” said Anthony Geisler, President of UFC Gym Franchise. “The partnership will enable UFC GYM to continue to provide a superior workout experience at a great value and will add even more ben-efits for current members and franchisees.”

Local franchisee Ryan McEvoy, owner of two locations in South Jersey, was happy about the news, “We are extremely excited to be a part of the UFC organization. Details are coming quickly about how and when the change over to the new UFC Gym will occur at our current LA Boxing locations in Cherry Hill and Turnersville.”

What a great way to kickoff 2013 bringing the UFC to South Jersey.

#8 - Honey Smacks (formerly Sugar Smacks)

The way it was: As a child, eating a bowl of sugar smacks was equivalent to an adult drinking 4 Starbuck’s Lattes, 2 Red Bulls and a gallon of Mountain Dew! Those Sweet Styrofoam bits were enough to keep you jumping on the couch all day.

The way it is: Originally named Sugar Smacks, Kelloggs renamed this cereal Honey Smacks in the late 80’s, only to later drop the Honey in the mid 90’s calling it simply Smacks. So what is it called now? That’s right, Honey Smacks. Trust me, we’re just as confused.

A fond memory: Who can forget Dig-Em? This legendary frog was not only the coolest mascot ever, but his signature “hat to the side” opened a new door for urban expression across the US. Music artist such as Eminem and 50 Cent owe a lot to this Hip Hop Icon (no pun intended).

Today’s reality: Honey Smacks still has an underground following, but it’s popularity has decreased since the 80’s and 90’s.

#7 - Count Chocula

The way it was: Count Chocula was one of the few monsters growing up we weren’t afraid of. Let’s face it, instead of wanting to suck our blood he offered us a delicious chocolate flavored cereal loaded with marshmallow bats. Not to mention his partner was a flamboyant drag-monster named Franken Berry.

The way it is: General Mills has revamped their Count Chocula formula throughout the years. Although many children today enjoy it’s signature Chocolaty taste, some veteran Count Chocula eaters aren’t as pleased. One YouTuber wrote, “Now it’s all puffy with a Cap’n Crunch texture. It sucks. It was better the way it was before.”

A fond memory: After finishing our Count Chocula cereal, every child knew that chocolate milk was waiting for us at the bottom. Breaking every rule of breakfast table etiquette, we would pick up our bowl and start slurping away.

Today’s reality: Although Boo Berry & Franken Berry are still in circulation, Count Chocula seems to be the lone survivor of his monster counterparts. I guess blue ghosts

and pink monsters just aren’t “Hip” anymore.

#6 - Apple Jacks

The way it was: The name “Apple Jacks” was a parent trap. For us children knew that it tasted more like Halloween candy than any healthy fruit. Nevertheless, our mothers let us eat it anyway because she thought it was nutritious since it had “apple” in the title.

The way it is: According to Kelloggs, Apple Jacks is a crunchy, sweetened multi-grain cereal with apple and cinnamon. But a friend of mine describes them as “little orange radioactive O’s with an acne problem.”

A fond memory: Cereal boxes had many practical uses as a child. I was recently told about someone who remembers using his Apple Jacks box as a fort to hide from his sister sitting across the table.

Today’s reality: The gig is up. Parents now realize eating a bowl of Apple Jacks is not the same as eating an apple. Even though it’s a good source of vitamin C, Niacin and Iron, it’s also packed with sugar (loading it with calories).

#5 - Lucky Charms

The way it was: “Everyone is always after me Lucky Charms.” You’re damn right we were Lucky. But we didn’t care about those little toasted bits, we just wanted the marshmallows. Loaded with sugar and bright colors, this cereal was a child magnet.

The way it is: The “Lucky” character has been a pot of gold for General Mills since his creation in 1963. For over 40 years, children have been chasing this elusive Leprechaun all across the world in pursuit of his addictive “illegal marshmallow” substance.

A fond memory: My cousin remembers emptying a box of Lucky Charms on the kitchen table as a child in order to seek out all of the marshmallows, place them back in the box and throwing out the rest. Needless to say, my aunt gave him the spanking of a lifetime.

Today’s reality: Originally there were pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars and green clovers. More recently, blue diamonds, purple horseshoes, red balloons and yellow keys have been added. What’s next? Teal Rabbit Feet and Golden Brass knuckles?

South Jersey’s Favorite Childhood Cereals

Remember going to the grocery store as a child and hearing mom say, “pick out a box of cereal.” Those words were music to our ears! But this was NEVER a simple decision. I mean, how can a kid choose between Cap’n Crunch Berries or Count Chocula? Seriously. Did we select the cereal with the cool toy inside or the one loaded with sugar? We recently did a survey and asked people for their feedback. So let’s countdown your top 8 favorite childhood cereals growing up.

Next week we will feature the final four of Childhood Cereals...Can you guess ahead of time which ones they are?

he first edition of “The Supper Club.” We made it through the holiday season - a girls’ Xmas dinner at the Chart House and Novita Bistro for Philly restaurant week.

e decided to go to Dos Caminos at Harrahs in Atlantic City for this final outing of the month. Since it was a Tuesday in the dead of winter, a reservation wasn’t necessary. We showed up to the restaurant and there was plenty of seating. It was very dark in both color and lighting, exactly the kind of restaurant I prefer. There were in-teresting paintings on the wall, along with “Day of the Dead” memorabilia. Sugar skulls lined the bar. While waiting for Jen to meet us, Maria and I sat at the bar and looked over the drink menu which was heavy with tequila. Maria got the frozen prickly pear margarita which she loved and I got a Patron Paloma, which was tequila mixed with muddled grapefruit and grapefruit soda. It was delicious and went down too easy.

inner started with an endless basket of tortilla chips. These were really good and salty. I prefer these over the bland chips you find a lot of the times at Mexican restaurants. These came with a trio of salsas for dipping: mild green, medium red, and a yellow hot. Big surprise, I stuck with the mild. On their menu taking up a large piece of real estate is the guacamole suggestion. For $12 you get a bowl for two people to share. We split it between the three of us, and it was enough because we had the dipping sauces. I ordered the Chipotle Beef Brisket Enchi-ladas. This wasn’t marked as spicy, but it was right at the end of my spicy threshold. The beef was falling apart tender and it had a lot of flavor. I wanted something on the side so I ordered the Mexican Street Corn. This was amazing and I highly recommend getting this. It was corn on the cob roasted and slathered in spices and cheese. It was also beautifully presented with a braided husk. The three entrees we ordered all came with rice and beans that were served family style. The portion was enough for one person though, and it was just your standard fair. I was much more interested in the corn! The portions were on the smaller side, but the prices weren’t jacked up either. The entrees ran between 14 and 28 dollars.

f course, I saved room for dessert. What kind of reviewer would I be if I didn’t? I started with coffee with cajeta, which is a Mexican confection of thickened syrup usually made of sweetened caramelized milk. It was different and not overpoweringly sweet. I like my coffee to still taste like coffee. Jen got the banana split, which she said was really good and Maria and I split the tres leche cake, which was served with fruit, homemade whipped cream, and this amazing punch of passion fruit sorbet. I could have just eaten that by itself. So yes, I definitely recom-mend Dos Caminos. The food is good and the atmosphere isn’t bright and loud. Meg’s up for February’s pick!

As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives and help people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; being a support system for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer; and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
