SEG MUK STUDENT CHAPTER ANNUAL CHAPTER SEG MUK Student Chapter commenced in September 2013 after its approval

and conducted the following activities.

Meetings SEG MUK chapter has held about 15 official executive meetings since

September, 2013 discussing field trip plans, SEG memberships, fundraising for

events and others.

Field Trips TRIP TO MINERAL ORE DEPOSITS IN WESTERN UGANDA Makerere SEG Student Chapter was privileged to have conducted its first field

trip to mineral deposits of Kasese district, Uganda from 19th to 21st January,

2014.

Stop 1 (20th)

Five trip participants travelled to Hima cement industry and traversed around the

limestone quarry a few metres from the cement plant after safety and caution

presentation from Mr. Joseph Kabaseke a PRO formerly working as a mining

supervisor.

Participants interacted with the quarry manager who provided more information

regarding the limestone mining in the area.

Like most other sedimentary rocks limestone is composed of skeletal and non

skeletal grains such as aquatic organisms, ooids, peloids, intraclasts, extraclasts.

These organisms secrete shells made of aragonite, calcite and leave these

shells when they die.

interaction with quarry manager

A presentation about physical and chemical techniques involved in the use of

limestone to manufacture cement by Mr. Philemon Mubiru a laboratory chemist

concluded our visit as shown summarized in the figure below.

transforming of raw materials into fine powder with binder characteristics

Product milling (clinker storage, milling, packing)

Pyro processing (burning line)

Raw mix separation (quarrying, crushing, grinding, blending

Stop 2 (21st)

Participants made it to the formerly abandoned Kilembe copper mines in

Nyamwamba area, Kasese district.

A presentation about further mineral exploration for copper , cobalt in the area by

Mr. Alex Binego Kwatampora a senior geologist welcomed us to the plant.

Formerly pyrite a product from processing chalcopyrite for copper was used in

the cut-and-fill method but later found to be a cobalt ore thus among exploration

targets are to excavate it and process it for cobalt.

Stop 3 (21st)

At about 10: 30, from Kilembe mines another stop was made at the Nyamwamba

hotsprings that could act as geo-medical hotspots where natives visit for fun and

treatment of various sicknesses.

FIELD TRIP TO EASTERN UGANDA This was carried out from 8th to 12th February 2014. The aim of the trip was to

cover different tertiary alkaline volcanic rocks of Eastern Uganda in different

stages of erosion. Each of these have have unique characteristics and some

complexes have been useful economically and others still have potential .

Partcipants included 9 Bsc students 1 Msc student and was headed by Dr.

Andrew Muwanga a senior lecturer at the geology department.

Stop at Peripheral Bukusu Carbonatite complex A central vent conglomerate of Bukusu complex is surrounded by a poorly exposed

broad zone of ijolite, melteigite and nepheline-synites and a rather narrow fringe of

pyroxenes, micapyroxenite, and hornblendite. This out crop is located at the edges of

the busuku complex and it consists of a quartz granitoids which has the composition of

quartz, plagioclases, and some alkaline minerals. The complex is surrounded by a

broad zones of feldspathization in which leucocratic granite and synite and quartz

pegmatoide have developed from the country rocks (granodiorite-gneisses).

Stop at Busumbu Phosphate mine The phosphate mine is located along the southern foot of the carbonatite. It is an open

pit mine within the Bukusu complex. The mine was established by the Busumbu Mining

Company after the East African Industrial Research Board carried out investigations to

obtain phosphate fertilizer for Kenya. Ores are of hard phosphate rock outcrops such as

phoscretes as well as friable phosphate bearing residual soil. These are underlain by

pyroxene-phlogopite-apatite-magnetite rock at depth, near a carbonatite vent. Friable phosphate was mined by hand from shallow adits and pits from about 1945-

1963. It was then crushed, dried, ground in a ball mill. Coarse magnetite was removed

to provide a fine grained phosphate rich powder. This was used as a raw phosphate

fertilizer.

Hard phosphate rock (grading 25-30%) was mined by blasting, crushed and screened

from 1950-1955. The undersize resulting material was exported to Kenya where it was

roasted with soda ash to make a soluble soda phosphate fertilizer. The grade of the

soda phosphate is said to have been 28% P2O5 with a solubility of 18% P2O5 in citric

acid. Production was superseded by the Sukulu operation in 1965. This mine was

produced a lot of agro-minerals like franchite, vermiculite and phosphate and from this

was considered as the agro-mine.

A recent re-evaluation of Busumbu ridge has given a resource estimate from the

surface to an average depth of 6m of 8.5 million tonnes with a grade ranging between

11-19% P2O5

Stop at Sukulu Carbonatite Complex The Sukulu carbonatite complex is a circular group of hills, about 4km across that

consists of carbonatites intruded from multi centres.

The principle carbonatite at Sukulu is sovite coarse grained and calcite rich, although

irregular patches of berfosite, dolomitic carbonatite, and ankerite occur as cross cutting

veinlets. The rocks are rich in magnetite, apatite, micas, tremolite, zircon and

pyrochlore.

In the carbonatite, several wide valleys are filled with thick chocolate-brown residual and

colluvial soils. The soil of the North valley were worked by open cast mining and apatite

concentrated and used for manufacture of single superphosphate at the nearby factory

of Tororo Industrial Chemical and Fertilizers Limited (TICAF), a subsidiary company of

the Uganda Development Corporation.

Near Sukulu phosphate are lime burners who make use of the Calcium carbonate which

is heated to give CaO ,Water is then added to CaO to form Calcium hydroxide which

turns powder form as it gives out heat(Exothermic). Lime that comes out of the whole

process is used in; Road construction, smoothening walls before painting and

strengthening the soil.

MUK Geology Barbeque This took place on 9th May 2014 at Makerere University staff canteen and

was attended by geology students and distinguished guests. It was hosted by

the association of geology students at the university uniting different chapters

particularly SEG MUK student chapter. The event commenced at about 17:45 and

among the special guests was Mr. Dozith Abeinomugisha a senior geologist

working with Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development who encouraged

students to advance their careers in the field of geology.

SEG MUK Chapter president delivered a brief speech to the geology fraternity

about the good news of SEG MUK approval and its benefits as well as

encouraged all geologists to join the society. Among other invited individuals

were the MUK AAPG president, MUK SEG president, MUK SPE president,

MUGA president and East African Geoscience Association vice president.

some of geology students that attended the event

After speeches from special guests the outgoing president SEG MUK president

introduced the present old executive committee and handed over to the

appointed new executive committee and attendees took dinner.

Future plans

Conducting career talks from experienced economic geologists and mentors

in the industry and academia.

Organising more field trips particularly to areas like mineral ore deposits of

Northern Uganda; Titanium deposits in Kwale, Kenya; gold deposits in

Buzwagi, North Mara, Tanzania and other possible areas.

 Increasing student SEG memberships

 Creating SEG MUK website etc

In conclusion we would like to appreciate the support rendered to the chapter

by Dr. Walter L. Pohl in its establishment and as well as SEG grant of $1000

to the chapter to support its activities as well as Department of Geology,

Makerere University. Thanking you all.
